Gillard ends discriminatory asylum policy Part II

Oh that's a bit sneaky. That was 1 billion over 5 years. The government is spending more then that in one year.

Of course lets ignore that fact that at the end of Howard's term the facility was just about empty, no more people dying on boats trying to get to Australia and that the boat people issue was a complete non issue.
Don't worry about Upton.

He's a Green - numbers and budgets are foreign concepts to them.

It has been a hundred years since we have used the U in Labor... But if it makes you feel good about yourself, go for it:thumbsu:
I think you are just an angry little man who can not accept that you aren't the sharpest tool in the shed.

Except of course when we do use the 'u'.

Anyway glad you have conceeded the debate and are now focused on regional spelling variations.

Tackling the big issues.

Funny how no one else gives a shit.

Hun and Bolt trying desperately to fling some dung while they still can.

Piracy is a fair call but should they be tried in the court of public opinion ? In this case it appears the current government is acting the most responsibly.

And are they going to dig Howard up ? Abbott is not Howard

Might as well counter by saying Keating set up detention centres in the first place

Who would be a captain?

Asylum seekers make threats to captain to change his course in a seaworthy vessel and the coalition responds with allegations of piracy (fair enough).

The Australian government makes threats to captain to change his course in a non-seaworthy vessel and the coalition responds wit...oh wait it was the coalition making the threats. Another example of piracy or just blatant hypocrisy?

So we know that Refugees are desperate?

The very fact they would sell themselves into poverty, place themselves at the mercy of the system and risk the voyage alone shows desperation.

What about the refugees in the camps? They are in poverty without needing to sell themselves and I would argue are the ones truely at the mercy of the system since they haven't chosen to bypass it.

The ones who take the boats are the ones who using/abusing the system to their advantage.

The No Advantage rule fixes that. System and rules absolutely clear from here on in. They can now stay safe and sound on land and not be disadvantaged by having to undertake the perilous journey and cash out.

Is the opposition that happy ?

Thye get "I told you so" but Abbott loses 33% of his simple minded election rhetoric.

BB proves yet again theres idiots who believe this is the most important issue ever "EVAH"

I'd love to see them say theyre happy with this and keep a straight face

You think Abbott is simple minded and his rhetoric is simple minded? you do realise he is a Rhodes Scholar ...and yet the Labor Party are led by dunces from the union movement and bureacrats...not one of them has lived in the real world. All are from the public service...and yet you have the audacity to claim Abbott's rhetoric is simple minded... jeepers. no wonder we have such an impossibly bad government when people like you would prefer the status quo of an incompetent labor govt....i know why...because they represent 'working people' and yet here you are saying abbott engages in simple minded rhetoric. wow,...just wow.

some stats for you:

The six leading members of the Government, from Mr Rudd down, the top six have a collective work experience of 181 years, but only 13 in the private sector.

If you take out of those 13 years the number that were spent as trade union lawyers, that total 11, of the 181 years, only two years were spent in the private sector.

So out of those 181 years:

- no years spent running their own business
- no years spent starting their own business
- no years spent as a director of a family business or a company
- no years as a director of a public company
- no years in a senior position in a public company
- no years in a senior position in a private company
- no years working in corporate finance
- no years in corporate or business restructuring
- no years working in or with a bank
- no years of experience in the capital markets
- no years in a stock-broking firm
- no years in negotiating debt facilities with banks
- no years running a small business
- no years at the World Bank or IMF or OECD
- no years in Treasury or Finance.

Both sides of this debate confuse and frankly sicken me.

The ultra-conservatives are worse, not wanting to take any in any refugees if they can help it (they're out there). The typical Green/left Labor voter is not much better. They may say all the right things, but even in the face of people dying, they refuse to live in the real world.

Then there's the other Labor voters that think this will somehow look good for Gillard ... they're just laughable.

Neither. It's just an example of why govt should immediately reintro the tough TPVs Howard did in September 2001 ( asylum seekers who had spent 7 days or more in a 3rd country were prohibited from applying for anything other than a TPV and if granted were made to reapply for TPV every three years - thus being permanently denied protectuion visas)...and also dispatch Carr to Djakarta to persuade/bribe/whatever Indonesia to cooperating in return of boats.

Otherwise govt will continue to be fodder for coalition.

TPVs alone won't stop the boats; but if you want a "no advantage" rule, TPVs are the way to go. Attempting to stop the boats is probably futile, but the one card we can play is to deny citizenship to those who come the wrong way.

It's quite simple, and the disadvantage for irregular arrivals is clear. Apply through the approved channels, and you'll get permanent residency and after being in Australia long enough you'll qualify for citizenship. But unauthorised arrivals will be sent home when it's safe to do so, and in the mean time they'll have to reapply every couple of years.
So a refugee who comes through the approved channels gets the chance to make a new life in Australia. An unathorised arrival will get protection while they need it, but will never be accepted as one of us.

We have an 'accidental premier' here in Victoria - who ticks quite a few of those boxes

But hes a total dud as a premier, and its his own side who are saying that loudest.

PS By simple minded I mean the fools hes (Abbott) appealing to = the ones who think a few refugees is the biggest problem we face

I get strong feeling Chris Bowen understands all of the above and is close to gutful at having to carry the can.

If JG keeps wobbling around, he might just resign and precipate a spill. He is a Rudd supporter after all.

You think Abbott is simple minded and his rhetoric is simple minded? .

'Stop the Boats, Stop the Waste' pretty much tops the list for simple minded rheotric.

Also, if he's such a guru with finance, please explain the 70 billion dollar black hole in his budget plan from the last election?

He either ****ed up, or is a liar.

Do not want.

No, it's an example of the delibarately inflammatory language used to by both sides of politics that cloud reasonable debate on the whole issue.

Mostly the libs, who know they get votes if the issue is in all the papers, whether they look good or bad

Was one suggesting the SAS should have been there to greet them like with howard ? sounds good for the rednecks but a complete misuse of highly trained troops. Maybe they should be based in Christmas Island

Heh, heh, media was trying its hardest to get Abbott to say he'd use the SAS, but he's too good for them Pess.

All he has to do now is sit tight as every boat arrival has its own story.

Private conversations between Morrison and Bowen must be worth bottling.

It's not about making Gillard look good it's all about (for Labor) trying to take this issue somewhat off the burner.

But i doubt that Tone will let that happen as with his latest sermon yesterday of piracy on the high seas & how he wants the string them up on the yardarm solution put into to play.

Whatever Howard done while in government Tone has visions of copying him right down to the letter, I too heard heard Abbott on sky yesterday mentioning the SAS clause in how he would deal with these dastardly vicious pirates who mentioned self harm when told they were heading to Singapore.

I still rate the sight of how Howard ordered our finest armed forces in the SAS to round up the men, woman & children with guns leveled at them on the deck of the Tampa to cower in fear as one of this countries major disgraces.

But i'm sure that the rednecks of this country would have got a kick out of it.
