Glen Jakovich's Phantom Draft

***This Phantom Draft is by no means serious. It's an ode to the many words and phrases the great man has used during his time behind the microphone. The inspiration behind it is the thread Drummond started in Footy Fourth Estate - DO NOT READ ON IF YOU ARE WANTING A SERIOUS PHANTOM DRAFT***

Glen Jakovich's Phantom Draft 2010

1. West Coast: David Swallow
All you could want in a footballer! Has the ability to amaze possessions at will, a good workrate that will get him into gameflow early in the game. He really is good in those small clinches and is very much in the mould of Geelong premiership player Troy Selwood. Will join a midfield already featuring Chris Masten and Brett Ebert and will condiment them beautifully.

2. West Coast: Harley Davidson
Another West Australian lad so the go home factor will not be huge. Harley is a high-skilled forward/midfielder who possessions a solid workrate. He was the barometer for many minutes in WA’s championships this season and a feature of his game is his unaided running. Could team with Mark LeCar to form a dangerous twin-towers combination for my beloved Eagles.

3. West Coast: Sam Day
Had many sports chasing his skills (Korfball and Handball) but chose footy. Has a lot of potential, can play either end of the ground and punch hit in the ruck. Needs to lift his workrate more and authoritise himself in games. With a few years of development, could be the type of forward that could rise to the cream of the top.

4. Gold Coast: Dyson Heppell
The Suns had a bad year in the VFL last season but have been promoted to the AFL this year. Adding a guy like Heppell will stiffen up their backline with his silky skills and workrate. You have to question his accountability sometimes as not many players in the TAC were prepared to pick him up.

5. Brisbane Loins: Andrew Gaff
Under Michael Vossy’s watch Brisbane have fallen from finals team to not good. They still have Jonathan Brown and Heath Black but need some more polish through the midfield. Gaff is the choice. His ability to amaze disposals, find space and his workrate will see him become a perineal All-Australian.

6. Richmond: Jared Polec
Starred in hostel conditions during the SANFL finals series for last two years. Has a booming left foot and a great workrate. His real asset is his ability to evase the tackler. He really does understands his limitations and takes the game on.

7. Gold Coast: Shaun Astley
After taking Heppell at 4, Gold Coast snap up Astley. He has a workmanlike ability to work for his team mates and is a pretty good disposer of the football. Not afraid to give the no argue and bust out of a pack. With his workrate, will be the engine room for the Suns for many years.

8. Essingdon: Josh Caddy
Essingdon had a shocking season going 5-20 last season under Peter Knights. The prod…prod…prodigious son, James Hird has returned to lead them back to glory. What better way to start your rain as coach by drafting a player like Josh Caddy. Tough in the small clinches and not afraid to get the jumper dirty and grimace with toughness. Workrate is solid.

9. Gold Coast: Tom Lynch
After taking a couple of midfielders/defenders, Gold Coast takes a punt on Lynch. Tom has the height and athletic ability to catch out both defences during a game. Will also lead several times without award due to his fantastic engine and workrate. A risky pick but Gold Coast have the next few so they can take a punt.

10. Gold Coast: Daniel Gorange
The first pure ruckman to be selected, Gorange is now 200cm but is still very thin. A few Boz steaks in the preseason and my weight routine and he could assemble Will Minson! Has the skills and athleticism to help Gold Coast work the ball forward with a multiple of handballs if required. A modern day ruckman with a fantastic workrate.

11. Gold Coast: Patrick McCartney
McCartney is just what the Suns need, a defender who can play on a variety of roles. Has good kicking ability and a decent workrate but can be lead to the ball and forget about his defensive responsibilities. Has be known to leave his thinking cap on...ah...in the changerooms. Could be a very quality defender.

12. Melbourne: Jay Viney
With his father moving back to Melbourne, the Demons have no choice here but to take young Jay. Played well in U16’s championships and has the workrate to succeed. Will join Tom Scully and Jack Tren…g...g…grove in an impotent midfield for many years to come. A small knock on Jay is that he tries to find the cute player too often.

13. Gold Coast: Karmichael Hunt
The former Rugby League and Union player impressed during his brief stint in VFL by kicking two goals back to back. Even showed a willingness to get physical and will be a great component of the no argue, which I like. Will need to lift his workrate though and address his lack of skills.

14. Adelaide: Brodie Smith
Adelaide’s midfield is in deep trouble. Last year they had Simon Goodwin, Tyson Edwards and Mark Rucciuto all retire, all were key players. Local lad Brodie Smith will go a long way to offstepping their departure with his ability to break away from packs with opposition hot on his pursuit. Workrate needs work but kicking has penetration. The Crows will also look at Sturt diamond in the bush, George Horny-Smith.

15. Geelong: Jack Darley
Very much in the mole of Lance Franklin, Jack Darley would be a great addition to the Cats ageing forwardline. Has had some off field problems but looks to have them evolved. Workrate can be an issue, as will his height, but I think Bomber Thompson has a lot to work with in this receptional talent.

16. Port Adelaide: Scott Lycett
Lycett was highly regarded as an Under 16’s player for SA but dropped off shortly after that. I think it was an apparition though and he has bounced back into contention as a strong marking forward/ruckman with good athleticism and workrate. Port could have gone a defender with this pick but that they have Al…al…al…alipali Carlile to build around.

17. North Melbourne: Billy Smelts
With North Melbourne trading David Hale to the Hawks, it would be easy to think they could go with a forward here but they have a fully fit Drew Petrol this season. Instead, they take Smelts. Can play as flanker down back but has the workrate to push forward into the midfield or even further into the forward and then defensive 50.

18. Carlton: Kieran Harper
Irish recruit that oozes X-Factor in the mould of Ronan Keating. Will condiment Jeff Gartlett and Eddie Betts in a forward line with his pace and workrate. Carlton coach Steven Ker…ker…kerny can afford to take a punt on him with their good crop of young key position talls.

19. Hawthorn: Lucas Cook
Hawthorn are rich in midfielders with Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell and Shane Crawford. Like Gorange, Cook requires a diet of Boz steaks and an increase in his workrate. He has the potential though to add to forward line where he can join Franklin and Roughead as a dangerous triple, twin-towers!!

20. Fremantle: Dion Imprezia
Fremantle have a very tall midfield so can take a chance with the nuggety Imprezia here. He impressed me in the wet last season with his ability of getting hand to foot in the conditions. Is known for taking action into his own hands with his explosive breakaways and workrate. A good unaided runner also.

ha, ha, good chuckle, you have the great man down to a tee.

but careful, he's been known to threaten legal action!

"triple-twin towers"

hahahahaha, great work. This kind of thread could be done with every component of the pre-season (trade week report, rookie draft preview, 2011 season preview etc.)
