Grand Final: Would you rather lose by 96 points or not make it?

Why do people always ask these questions and not include a poll. I would actually like to know the result!

Having seen Geelong lose 4 of them I would still say lose it. You need to enjoy the ride, the hope and the anticipation right up to the point when your season is over.

I would rather get owned.. than lose by 4 points. The Sydney vs Eagles games have been so bad for our hears. I swear, we're all going to die at 50 or something because of this.

At least when you get smashed, you can relax and congratulate the other team. When it comes down to the last seconds like in 05, you really have your heart in your mouth and you keep your hope right until the final siren. Its not a good feeling when you lose.

Winning on the other hand. :)

I would rather see us make the grand final though. Just so Juddy can add to his norm smith medal collection. :D

I prey to see the day when we beat collingwood by one point, from a dodgy free kick with 10 seconds to go!

How do you know? You have tyo make one first, not being a smartarse but it is a massive feeling
yeah no doubt but we bowed out in the prelim last year and that was pretty ordinary too . The club would be even more motivated for the following year if they had their chance and blew it, rather than not making it at all.

Losing the big one hurts like hell, no question. I know. But I'd infinitely prefer to make it and lose than not make it. It's a 16 team comp, and making it means you've done better than 14 other sides....

The 02 close loss was more heart breaking than the 03 flogging. I can't go through another GF loss though....

Gutless people would rather not try than fail so they always fail. I’d rather lose by 200 points than not make it and I’ve seen my team lose by just about every margin there is. The one win I’ve seem more than makes it worthwhile.

Ask Darcy what his best football moment is. It is a losing PF. Ask Bob Skilton what his best moment is. It isn’t a Brownlow it is a solitary final.

Ask any member of Melbourne’s heavy GF defeat in ’88. They will all say it was the best and worst day of their career. Any that I have heard speak about it have said they wouldn’t change the fact they played.

Disagree. The 2003 GF was a terrible day. One I wish we could wipe from history.

In ’02 I always thought Brisbane were a better side and while I got my hopes very high during the game at times, in the last 5 minutes the result was clear and I could reflect on a true fighting Collingwood season and GF performance. That game seemed to take about 10 minutes to be played out to me. It was almost over before I knew it because I was so emotionally engrossed in the game. In the end it was a good season for a side that came from where we came from.

2003 was an absolute disaster from team selection to the piss poor reaction to the defeat by the coach and the club. 2002 was a good season. From the night after the 2002 GF things went awry though. The list management left a lot to be desired from that point and misjudgements on individual players and the overall list quality and deficiencies were made. The 2003 GF hurt like hell. That we repeated the post season mistakes of 2002 is unforgivable. It is also what stands between a premiership this year and possibly a battling PF appearance.

The one that I found it hardest to take was 1981. After blowing it in 1977, having Harmes steal it in 1979 and being embarrassed in 1980 in watched Moore being run of by a hack as we blew a good lead in time on in the 3rd Q and over run in the last. That was a game we lost from selection to match day coaching. 2003 was very reminiscent. 1981 was Hafey’s wost moment and 2003 was Malthouse’s. We sacked Hafey soon after. We lost our nerve t do the same after 2003.

would rather not make it then see the pies lose by 96 + I would have to take the next three weeks off workas I would be copping it from everyone.

If you told me before September that those were my options I'd take the loss, and bet on the margin.:thumbsu:

Might be able to put some of the winnings toward a little Vic repatriation project, codename JuddPie.

This is going purely from hindsight tho, of course you want to be in it, but looking back, GF losses hurt more than prelim losses or bowing out in the early rounds, especially if you get beaten easily as happened in '91, which I felt was worse than '05.

100% Winning record FTW :thumbsu:

What's your prelim final record? :D

Losing a grand final sucks balls. I've been through Eagles, Wildcats, and Glory GF defeats, which have included some real heartbreakers, such as the Eagles losing by less than a goal with Leonardo Di Barrio pack marking a lasp gasp attack, the Wildcats storming home on the back of Vlahov only to lose by 2 points to Andrews Gay and the Tigers after a Vlahov 3 point attempt in the final minute rolled around the rim before magically (or unmagically) defying gravity and popping back out of the hoop, and the Glory blowing a 3-0 lead to go into penalties. All heartbreaking days and tears have definitely been shed.

But I've also been fortunate enough to see ultimate victory by all my sides, and that's something a lot of supporters never get to see. You have to go through the pain to appreciate the good times.

Leonardo Di Barrio. He he. I like it.

You are very lucky you have victories to offset your pain. Without ultimate success and seing my team drop 4 GF's and that Semi against Sydeny I might just lose my mind if the Cats ever win one.

The closest I got to a flag in my sporting career was a Volleyball Pennant in grade 5 many many moons ago. Ah, memories...:thumbsu:

Wait a minute. How quickly I forget. Go Victory.

Definitely make it.

The whole GF week is great - you're on a high and you can think of nothing else.

Unfortunately we've lost two in my time, but I was at both preliminary finals and they are great memories.

Preliminary finals are probably more enjoyable - GF's just become a blur.
