Match 25

'Til Death Us Do Part

250px-Tdudp.JPG

Till Death Us Do Part (also known as Til Death Us Do Part)[1] was a BBC television sitcom series written by Johnny Speight that ran from 1966 until 1975. The programme starred Warren Mitchell as the racist East End misogynist (and Rudyard Kipling lookalike) Alf Garnett. Also appearing in the series were Dandy Nichols as Alf's long-suffering wife, Else Garnett, Una Stubbs as Rita, his daughter, and Anthony Booth as Mike, his layabout son-in-law, whose socialist leanings were the cue for many of Alf's more offensive outbursts.

vs

The Honeymooners

200px-The_Honeymooners_title_screen.png

The Honeymooners is an American television situation comedy produced by Jackie Gleason enterprises, inc.[1] for CBS from 1955–56. It was based on characters developed by Jackie Gleason in 1951 and popularized in a series of sketches first performed on the successful variety show Cavalcade of Stars, and subsequently on The Jackie Gleason Show. The show was set in the Bensonhurst, Brooklyn apartment of Ralph Kramden (Gleason) and his wife Alice (Audrey Meadows), a struggling working class couple, and also featured upstairs neighbors Ed Norton (Art Carney) and his wife Trixie (Joyce Randolph).

The Honeymooners debuted as a half-hour series on October 1, 1955. Although initially a ratings success—it was the #2 show in the United States—it faced stiff competition from the popular Perry Como Show. The show eventually dropped to #19, and production ended after 39 episodes (now referred to as the "Classic 39"). The final episode of The Honeymooners aired on September 22, 1956. Gleason revived "The Honeymooners" as a sketch in his variety shows, most notably as part of a 1966–70 version of The Jackie Gleason Show.

Despite its relatively brief run, The Honeymooners is considered one of the premier examples of American television comedy. It has been referenced in numerous homages and parodies, and has inspired successful television comedies such as The Flintstones and The King of Queens. A critically-panned film remake starring Cedric the Entertainer was released in 2005.

Match 26

The Office (UK)

250px-Theoffice.jpg

The Office is an Emmy, Golden Globe Award and BAFTA Award-winning British television comedy that first aired in the UK on BBC Two on 9 July 2001. Created, written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the programme is about the day-to-day lives of office employees in the Slough, Berkshire branch of the fictitious Wernham-Hogg Paper Company. Although fictional and scripted, the programme takes the form of a documentary (a fictional documentary, i.e. a mockumentary), with the presence of the camera often acknowledged.

vs

The Golden Girls

195px-Gg_beaarthur.jpg

The Golden Girls is an American sitcom that originally aired on NBC from September 14, 1985, to May 9, 1992.

Four older, retirement-age women share a fashionable house in Miami Beach, Florida. Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan) owned the house; Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur) and Rose Nylund (Betty White) responded to an ad on the bulletin board of a local grocery store for roommates. Blanche, Rose and Dorothy were later joined by Dorothy's mother Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty), when Sophia's retirement home, Shady Pines, burned down. In the pilot episode, the character of Coco (played by Charles Levin), a gay man who was the cook, was also featured, but was dropped from the show after the pilot. Originally, the character of Sophia was intended to appear only sporadically, but Getty's portrayal proved so popular with test audiences that the decision was made to drop Coco and hastily write Sophia into the earliest scripts.

Match 27

Malcolm In The Middle

275px-MitM_credits_logo.jpg

Malcolm in the Middle is a seven-time Emmy-winning,[1] one-time Grammy-winning[1] and seven-time Golden Globe-nominated[1] American sitcom created by Linwood Boomer for the Fox Network. The series was first broadcast on January 9, 2000, and ended its six-and-a-half-year run on May 14, 2006, after seven seasons.

The show starred Frankie Muniz as Malcolm, the third-born of four, later five, children in the family, parented by Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) and Hal (Bryan Cranston). The oldest child, Francis (Christopher Masterson), was shipped off to military school, leaving the three boys: Reese (Justin Berfield), Malcolm, and Dewey (Erik Per Sullivan) living at home, Malcolm being the second oldest of the three (hence the title of the show). The show's early seasons centered on Malcolm and the rigors of being an adolescent genius and his eccentric, although eerily normal, life; later seasons additionally began to explore the other members of the family and their friends in more depth.

The series was different from many others in that Malcolm broke the fourth wall and talked directly to the viewer; it was shot using a single camera; and it used neither a laugh track nor a live studio audience. Emulating the style of hour-long dramas, this half-hour show was shot on film instead of video. Another unique aspect is that the cold open of every episode is unrelated to the main story, except episodes which were the second part of a two-part series, which open with a summary of part one.

vs

McHale's Navy

300px-MCNVY.jpg

McHale's Navy was an American television sitcom series. The series ran for 138 half-hour episodes from September 11, 1962 to August 20, 1966 on ABC. The series was presented in the Black and white format. The show sprang from a one-hour drama called Seven Against the Sea broadcast on April 3, 1962.

As was the pilot, the series was set in the Pacific theatre of World War II (in the show's last season the setting was switched to Italy) and focused on the crew of PT-73, again led by Lt. Commander Quinton McHale (Borgnine).

Is it to late to ask for Trailer Park Boys to be added?
Yes sorry. I know there will be some missed out that will raise eyebrows and some in there that will do the same but it was hard to piece together and get it started without talking about it for a week first.

I think we can all agree that none of the ones that missed out will be in the last 16 in a vote off situation anyway.

Feel free to add any extra comments or pictures about any show not covered however. This thread should be as much a sitcom tribute as a competition anyway. Might make a nice one stop sit com reference thread down the track.

Match 28

Gomer Pyle USMC

th-3456-0014.jpg

Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. is an American situation comedy that originally aired on CBS from September 25, 1964 to May 2, 1969.

The series was a spinoff of The Andy Griffith Show, where the premise was introduced in an episode which aired on May 19, 1964. The show featured Jim Nabors reprising his role as the bumbling but lovable Gomer Pyle, who had left the town of Mayberry and joined the U.S. Marine Corps (Gomer's cousin, Goober Pyle, replaced him back home at Wally's filling station). The series mostly revolved around Pyle's misadventures in the Marines, usually ending with his good-naturedness winning over adversity, especially his hard-nosed Drill Instructor, Gunnery Sergeant Vince Carter (played by the late Frank Sutton).

vs

The Nanny

240px-Nannylogo.JPG

Match 29

The Goodies

240px-TheGoodies.jpg

The Goodies are a trio of British comedians (Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie), who created, wrote, and starred in a surreal British television comedy series called The Goodies during the 1970s and early 1980s combining sketches and situation comedy.

vs

Mind Your Language

200px-Fightclass.png

Mind Your Language is a British comedy television series originally shown on ITV between 1977 and 1979. Produced by LWT and directed by Stuart Allen, it is set in a school for adult students in London, focusing on the English as a Foreign Language class taught by Mr. Jeremy Brown, portrayed Barry Evans, who had to deal with a motley crew of foreigners. A new version of the show with some of the original cast aired in 1986.

The series focuses on the English as a Foreign Language class for adult students in a London school. The classes take place in the early evening, and are taught by Mr. Jeremy Brown (Barry Evans), though on occasion other individuals take over the class if Mr. Brown is not available. The class consists of foreigners with varying degrees of English proficiency, with no two students from the same country (with the exception of Jamilla Ranjha and Ranjeet Singh, who come from two very different regions of India). The humour of the show is derived from the students misunderstanding English words or terms, and plays up to the cultural stereotype of their individual nation of origin.

The show was cancelled in 1979 by Michael Grade, then LWT's Deputy Controller of Entertainment, who considered the stereotyping offensive. Nevertheless it was sold to other countries where it found amazing popularity, including Pakistan, Australia, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia and Singapore .

I'm nowhere near as cut up about it as I am that Men Behaving Badly beat Dads Army before I had a chance to vote.

I mean I love Tony and Gary (in the blokiest sort of way) as much as the next man, (again that's not 'love' in a biblical sense) but better than Dad's Army? One of the greatest casts and scripts that extracted every last laugh of each situation. These guys got five minutes of the funniest TV ever just by getting in and out of a freaking car for ****s sake! WITHOUT SAYING A WORD!!!!

Dads Army>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Men Behaving Badly.

I'm nowhere near as cut up about it as I am that Men Behaving Badly beat Dads Army before I had a chance to vote.
To make it worse, the vote that got it over the top was followed by another vote for Dad's Army that would have seen it win.

But the real killer is that somebody else had voted for Dad's Army earlier but for some reason deleted their post. I was hoping the aberration would have been rectified but it was not to be.

Match 30

Red Dwarf

250px-Red_Dwarf_logo.png

Red Dwarf is a British science fiction comedy franchise, the primary form of which comprises eight series of a television sitcom that ran on BBC2 between 1988 and 1999, and which has achieved a global cult following.

Despite the pastiche of science fiction used as a backdrop, Red Dwarf is primarily a character driven comedy, with many off-the-wall science fiction elements used as complementary plot devices. For example, in the early series, a recurring source of comedy was the "odd couple" relationship between Dave Lister and Arnold Rimmer, the two central characters of the show, who have an intense dislike for each other but are trapped together in an isolated deep space scenario.

vs

Scrubs

Scrubscard.png

Scrubs is an Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning American situation comedy/comedy-drama that premiered on October 2, 2001 on NBC. It was created by Bill Lawrence, who also co-created Spin City and is produced by Touchstone Television. The show focuses on the professional and personal lives of several characters working at Sacred Heart, a teaching hospital. It features verbose characters, slapstick, fast-paced dialogue, and surreal vignettes, which are presented as the daydreams of the main characters. This latter feature was originally focused entirely on the central character, doctor John "J.D." Dorian, however it was expanded to the daydreams of other characters as the series progressed. According to the NBC official website, the seventh and final season of Scrubs will premiere on October 25, 2007.

I'm almost tempted to abuse my mod powers, restore the post and then demand a recount...

Match 31 3 way matchup

Saved By The Bell

250px-

vSaved by the Bell is an American sitcom that originally aired between 1989 and 1993. The series is a retooled version of the 1987 series Good Morning, Miss Bliss, which later retconned into the history of Saved by the Bell. The series follows the exploits of several students at Bayside High School, along with their principal. The show stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Dustin Diamond, Lark Voorhies, and Dennis Haskins, who appeared in Good Morning, Miss Bliss, as well as Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley, and Mario Lopez who joined the cast for Saved by the Bell. The show brought fame to the cast members and launched most of their careers.

vs

3rd Rock From The Sun

250px-3rdRock_Title.jpg

3rd Rock from the Sun is an Emmy Award-winning American sitcom that ran from 1996 until 2001 on NBC. The show was about a group of extraterrestrial scientists on an expedition of what they considered to be the least important planet, Earth (the "3rd Rock" from the Sun), posing as a "family" of four to observe human beings, while pretending (usually awkwardly) to be humans.

vs

Frontline

728252.jpg

Frontline is an Australian comedy television series which satirised Australian television current affairs programs and reporting. It ran for three series of 13 half-hour episodes and was broadcast on ABC TV in 1994, 1995 and 1997.

The series follows the fortunes of a fictional current affairs show, Frontline, which airs on a fictional commercial network, much like real networks Channel 7, Channel 9 and Channel 10. In the show, Frontline competes directly with Nine's A Current Affair and Seven's Real Life, which changed its name to Today Tonight from 1995 onwards.

The Frontline office showcases and satirises the machinations of the ruthless producers, the self-obsessed airhead host, and the ambitious, cynical reporters, all of whom resort to any sort of underhanded trick to get ratings and maintain their status - including the use of hidden cameras, foot-in-the-door, bullying interview techniques and chequebook journalism. They ingratiate themselves with the all-powerful network bosses, while the real work is in fact done by their long-suffering production staff.

In the interests of science* we should do this exercise again using polls and see if we get a different result.

* and to give me a chance to vote for Dad's Army.

I wanted to leave polls open for 24 hours each but that is 126 separate threads to find a winner.

I am sure someone would have complained.

I will start another thread for round 2 and round 3 and probably go individual threads/polls from the round of 16 onwards.

Like sports mate, here are always upsets.

I was going to reinstate that post too but there must have been a reason for deleting it. Perhaps they thought they were voting at the wrong time. Hmmm.

Edit: Executive decision. I call shenanigans. Dad's Army will go against Men Behaving Badly and one other show in a 3 way contest in round 2.

Match 32

Hogan's Heroes

160px-Hogan%27s_Heroes_Title_Card.png

Hogan's Heroes was an American television situation comedy that ran from September 17, 1965 to July 4, 1971 on the CBS network for 168 episodes. Starring Bob Crane as Colonel Robert E. Hogan, the show was set in a German prisoner of war (POW) camp during World War II. The program was a Bing Crosby production.

The show took place at Stalag 13, a POW camp located near the town of Hammelburg, run by the Luftwaffe for captured airmen. Although there was a real-life Stalag 13 near Hammelburg (formally known as Stalag XIII-C Hammelburg/Mainfranken), the one in Hogan's Heroes was entirely fictional.

The show's premise was that the POWs were actually active war participants, using the camp as a base of operations for Allied espionage and sabotage against the Nazis. The "prisoners" could leave and return almost at will via a secret network of tunnels and had radio contact with Allied command. They were aided by the incompetence of the camp commandant Colonel Klink and his aide Sergeant Schultz; Hogan would routinely manipulate the incompetent Klink and get Schultz to look the other way while his men conducted secret operations.

vs

The Addams Family

200px-Addams_gomez5.jpg

The Addams Family is an American television series based on the characters in Charles Addams' New Yorker cartoons. The 30 minute series was shot in black-and-white and aired for two seasons in 64 installments on ABC from September 18, 1964 to April 8, 1966. It is often compared to its rival, The Munsters, which ran for the same two seasons and achieved somewhat higher Nielsen Ratings.

The Addamses are a close-knit extended family with decidedly macabre interests. They all have supernatural abilities, although no rationale for their powers is ever explicitly given.

The very wealthy, endlessly enthusiastic Gomez Addams is madly in love with his refined wife Morticia. Along with their two children, Wednesday and Pugsley, Uncle Fester and Grandmama, they reside in an ornate, gloomy mansion, attended by their servants, Lurch, the towering butler, and Thing, a hand that usually appears out of a small wooden box. Occasionally, episodes would feature relatives or other members of their weird subculture, such as Cousin Itt or Morticia's older sister Ophelia.
