Porridge

250px-

Porridge was a British BBC television sitcom (1974–1977), written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais and starring Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale. In a 2004 BBC poll of the 50 greatest British sitcoms, it was voted number 6. It is set in the fictional "HMP Slade" in Cumberland (now Cumbria). "Doing porridge" is British slang for a spell of imprisonment, as porridge was once a traditional breakfast in UK prisons. It was followed by the sequel series, Going Straight.

Extras

250px-Extras_title_card.jpg

Extras is an Emmy Award winning British television sitcom about extras working on film sets and in theatre. The series is co-produced by the BBC and HBO, and is written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, both of whom also star in it.

Extras has two series of six episodes each. The first episode aired in the UK on 21 July 2005 on BBC Two and on 25 September 2005 on HBO in the US. The second series premiered in the UK on BBC Two on 14 September 2006 and began airing in the US on HBO and in Australia on ABC on 14 February 2007.[1] Both series are available on DVD in the UK and the US. In July 2007, Gervais announced on his video podcast a Christmas special would air in the same fashion as The Office.

The series is filmed in a more traditional sitcom style than the mockumentary style used by Ricky Gervais and Merchant in their previous award-winning series The Office. Each episode has at least one guest star; a television or film celebrity, who play what Gervais and Merchant have referred to as "twisted" versions of themselves[2]; an exaggerated or inverted parody of their famous public personas.

vs

Good Times

240px-

Good Times was the African-American family sitcom from February 8, 1974 until August 1, 1979 on the CBS television network.

Good Times starred Esther Rolle as Florida Evans and John Amos as her husband, James Evans, Sr. The characters originated on Maude as Florida and Henry Evans, with Florida employed as Maude's housekeeper in upstate New York. When producers decided to feature the Florida character in her own show, they applied retroactive changes to the characters' history. Henry's name became James, there was no mention of Maude, and the couple now lived and always had lived in Chicago.

Good Times was based on Eric Monte's childhood. Florida and James Evans had three children and the family rented an apartment in a housing project (implicitly the infamous Cabrini-Green projects, shown in the opening and closing credits but never mentioned by name on the show) in a poor, black neighborhood in inner-city Chicago. Florida and James' children were J. J. (Jimmie Walker), Thelma (Bern Nadette Stanis), and Michael (Ralph Carter). When the series began, J.J. and Thelma were seventeen and sixteen years old, respectively, and Michael, called "the militant midget" by his father due to his passionate activism, was eleven years old. Their exuberant neighbor, and Florida's best friend, was Willona Woods (played by Ja'net Du Bois), a recent divorcée.

Match 35

The Beverly Hillbillies

beverly-hillbillies-2.jpg

The Beverly Hillbillies was an American television program about a hillbilly family living in Southern California. A Filmways production, the series aired on CBS from September 26, 1962, to May 23, 1971. Filmways produced 274 episodes, 106 in black-and-white (1962-1965), and 168 in color (1965-1971).

In the series, patriarch Jed Clampett strikes oil while hunting on his land. He then moves with his family to Beverly Hills, California, with the resultant wealth.

Despite being panned by some critics, The Beverly Hillbillies shot to the top of the Nielsen Ratings shortly after its premiere and stayed there for several seasons. The series did receive two Emmy nominations for Best Comedy Series as well as nominations for cast members Irene Ryan and Nancy Kulp. It was ranked in the top ten most watched prime time programs for six of its nine seasons.

The series starred Buddy Ebsen as the widowed patriarch Jed "J. D." Clampett; Irene Ryan as his mother-in-law, Daisy "Granny" Moses; Donna Douglas as his daughter, Elly May Clampett; and Max Baer, Jr. as his cousin's son, Jethro Bodine. The version of Jed's name used in the 1993 theatrical movie, "Jedediah", was never mentioned in the series

vs

Curb Your Enthusiasm

250px-

Curb Your Enthusiasm is an American sitcom starring Seinfeld writer, co-creator, and executive producer Larry David as himself. Since its 2000 series debut, the HBO show has enjoyed wide critical acclaim and a steadily growing, dedicated audience that has helped it emerge from its early cult status. Through 2004, it has been nominated for twenty Emmy Awards (winning one) and has won a Golden Globe for best television comedy (2003).

Set in Los Angeles and loosely based on David's life as a semi-retired multi-millionaire in the world after Seinfeld, the series is often described as a more subversive take on that hit program's "show about nothing" motif.

There is no way that Men Behaving Badly was a better sitcom than Dad's Army. No way at all!

Warwick and I are forming the Dad's Army Liberation Front.

We of the DALF will never cease fighting until Dad's Army is restored to it's glorious rightful place at the supreme head of sitcoms!

Viva l' Dad's Armee!

Last one until later tonight. I have to go out.

Match 36

Night Court

250px-Night_Court.jpg

Night Court was an American television situation comedy that aired on NBC from January 1984 until May 1992. The setting for the show was the night shift of a court in Manhattan, presided over by the young, unorthodox Judge Harry Stone (played by Harry Anderson).

vs

WKRP In Cincinnati

250px-WKRP_Jennifer_and_Johnny.jpg

WKRP in Cincinnati (1978–1982) is an American situation comedy that featured the misadventures of the staff of a struggling radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio. The show was created by Hugh Wilson, and premiered September 18, 1978 on the CBS television network. The ensemble cast consisted of Gary Sandy, Howard Hesseman, Gordon Jump, Loni Anderson, Tim Reid, Jan Smithers, Richard Sanders, and Frank Bonner.

As was typical of most MTM productions, the humor came more from running gags based on the known predilections and quirks of each character, rather than from outlandish plots or racy situations. The characters also developed somewhat over the course of the series.
