Greatest players by club

Make a case that either Chicken Smallhorn or Dinny Ryan should go ahead of the six / seven players mentioned and we'll see.

I think your top 5 are all extremely worthy, no doubts. I was simply throwing forward some names for thoughts. Ruthven is one that must be very stiff to miss out but as I said your top 5 are all worthy cotenders.

In order of 'greatness'....my opinion only

Fitzroy's greatest half a dozen (couldn't narrow it down to five)
1. Haydn Bunton snr.
2. Kevin Murray
3. Paul Roos
4. Garry Wilson
5. Jack Moriarty
6. John Murphy (very narrowly from Bernie Quinlan)

Brisbane Lions greatest half-dozen
1. Michael Voss
2. Simon Black
3. Jason Akermanis
4. Nigel Lappin
5. Justin Leppitsch
6. Alistair Lynch

Bears greatest half dozen (over their 222 games)
1. Roger Merrett
2. Marcus Ashcroft
3. Scott McIvor
4. Richard Champion
5. Brad Hardie
6. Matthew Kennedy (narrowly from Shaun Hart)
Great work Roylion.

Not knocking this list at all, but how far back to you want to go? Essendon had a guy named Albert Thurgood who by all reports was one of the best to ever play.

He won the "Champion of the Colony" medal in 1893, 1894 and 1901 - amazing considering he played in Perth from 1895 to 1899 returning to the Vic league in 1900, and retired at the end of 1902 (in some controversy).

Thurgood is widely regarded as the first true superstar of Australians Rules Football.

Here's some links if you're interested.

It's a difficult one for Essendon, giben they have seemingly had champions in every era.

Alongside of Thurgood, names like Daniher, Fitzmaurice, Clarke, Watson, Fraser, Long, Wanganeen, Thompson, Leek, Van Der Haar, O'Donnell etc are right up there too!

That would be my list for the greatest players of all time at each club

Couldn't find a place for them in the team of the century is all.

Perhaps if you talked up your multiple premiership heroes from the old days, one or more of them may have made the team. As it stands, if Daicos and Buckley are the best to ever play for Carringbush, then sorry, no soup for you.

??? no Collingwood players were listed in the AFL team of the century

Whether they be the original high flying forward D.Lee
Either of the champion Coventry or Collier Bros
The Prince of fullbacks J.Regan
Arguably many actual players most respected player B.Rose
L.Thompson who changed the way the ruck position was played

It has nothing to do with not being talked up, it is simply that the team of the 1920's - 30's was brilliant but how many of the voting panel actually saw any of them play?? They were simply going based on what they saw

In terms of Collingwood rankings, After being ignored by the AFL Collingwood was the first team to create its own Team of the Century. Pretty sure that the Collingwood team was announced in 1999, and yet even at that stage Buckley was given a position in the team of the century.

Since then Buckley has gone on to now hold the record for the most games captaining the club
Holds the record for the most Copeland trophies
Driven the club into two GF's, and took home a norm smith medal

Now it would be debated whether Buckley or Syd Coventry would be captain of the best ever Collingwood team

It would be debated whether Buckley would push out B.Rose or Tuddy as Ruck Rover or Centre in the best team ever.

The only thing that Buckley doesn't have that the old magpie champions has is team success, but that is explained when the Coventry's, Collier's, Rumney, Regan, Fothergill, P.Kyne all their careers over lapped

even in the 50's Rose, Weideman, merret, L.Richards all played in the succesful sides

and even in the 60,70s when all those GF's were lost the
Tuddy, B.Picken, Thommo, W.Richardson all played

The 90 GF gave us Daicos, Millane, T.Shaw, G.Brown

But from the 02,03 GF's it was only one bloke doing it all N.Buckley, nothing against them but blokes like Licca, Wakelin, Betheras whilst they give their all they simply dont stack up in terms of support

N.Buckley is easily in the top 5 best ever Collingwood players, arguably the best many people who used to say B.Rose was the best Collingwood player are coming around to Buckley as the best they have seen!

Thats a pretty good list there, quite accurate. Perhaps put Lockett in contention for a Swans spot just for his achievement in goal kicking.

this is why its probably best for people not to try make this list for clubs they dont support.. Barker was a star, fearless and all the rest of it.. however ian stewart/rob harvey/the doc would rate higher.. prob say Rob harvey best player of all time for saints.. good effort tho to name 16 players

Yeah that's true. It's always hard to do. I just thought Trevor Barker was couragous. I can edit the post and add Robert Harvey :D

Underrated by everyone except Pies fans..., are you gonna tell me that Buckley shouldn't too?

Millane could have been top5 but his career was cut down when entering his prime

Buckley
Rose
H.Collier
S.Coventry
G.Coventry
L.Thompson
J.Regan
P.Daicos

would all be ahead of Pants

Pants, Greening, R.Todd head the list of should have beens!

St. Kilda

Robert Harvey
Ian Stewart
Trevor Barker
Daryl Baldock
..more

Maybe I should add Lockett? He is the only full forward to have won the Brownlow whilst playing for us.

He wasn't but the pick the Bombers used to get him was traded by the Dockers for Tony Delaney

No. The Bombers were awarded that pick by the AFL for Freo picking up the uncontracted Tony Delaney.

Had Delaney not come to Freo, the pick wouldn't have existed. It was never Freo's pick. Freo could never have picked up Lloyd. It was impossible as the pick was never Freo's.

If you're going to troll, at least get it right. ;)

If you truely are 14 you never saw him play - I did and he would struggle to be in the top 5 in the 1990 premiership team let alone all time. As with with many who die young, their legend becomes far greater than the actual reality.
