AN EMBARRASSED Port Adelaide is still searching for reasons behind its opening-round flop but dismisses its coaching succession plan as a factor.
The Power crashed to a 91-point loss to Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday night, the heaviest defeat in Ken Hinkley's 13 seasons as coach.
Hinkley will hand over to long-time assistant coach Josh Carr at season's end but Port rejects suggestions the succession plan has distracted the club.
"Absolutely not," assistant coach Chad Cornes told reporters on Monday.
Power players and coaches met on Monday but remain at a loss to explain their lacklustre performance against the Magpies.
"Everyone is really disappointed; embarrassed was a word that a lot of the players brought up, coaches as well," Cornes said.

And in this article is everything that's wrong with the Club yet they can't/won't see it.

  • when your philosophy is one of protection and making sure it's a safe environment for the players (don't listen to anyone or anything apart from within the walls) you become insular, you think you're better than what you are.
  • when you don't even fully review horrible losses (and there have been many) as to not scar or damage the players mental welfare you create an environment of players picking and choosing as they know there are no real consequences.
  • when a coaching group continually say they have "no idea" why such and such happened and then such and such happens multiple times a year then see the above points to see why they don't have any idea. They are scared to make decisions based on evidence as they also like the shield the philosophy provides.
It's not mystery why we are what we are, it's there for all to see many times a year. We don't seek the very best at any level throughout the club, we instead like to provide a safe space for everyone. No expectations, no consequences for absolute failure.

This attitude has crept throughout the Club. The coach, coaching staff, players, list management, conditioning, the list has no end.

IMO, Koch has tried to recreate what AFL footy is to mold it more to his personal world views. Less masculinity, less cutthroat nature, a softer more secure work environment for all.

I think this has been ongoing for many years and the seeds are now well and truly showing and that's resulted in an acceptance of standards well below what is actually required at this level.

Other clubs embrace the same philosophies, as does the AFL as a whole. There is more to it then that, possibly more so with the coach and his assistants. The continual internal selection and promotion of staff is in my belief breeding a insular world view in which the status quo is not questioned or challenged (football wise). Minimal new ideas are injected or are not available, as we don't seek the best people or those who are ahead of the curve.

Chad, its cause the players don't give a sh!t. Most of them view playing AFL as a job. They don't care about prestige and accolades. Combine that with a coach who is leaving at the end of the season gives them a free out. They are not invested in winning anymore.

Also you and the other coaches just suck BIG TIME!

I saw Kane commentary pissed at the Port players staying on the ground for 5 minutes to shake Houstons hand after he finished a TV interview.

Have to agree with him. Stuff Houston, get off the ground. Were way too nice. I wonder who led the hey let's wait for Dan before we go, crickey

Do it behind closed doors
Be professional
It's not fcuking hard

I don't think it is a stretch that the clubs whose boards are controlled by the AFL are more likely to prioritise stability over success than the clubs whose boards are beholden to their members demanding success.

The club's board and administration deserves every bit of mockery and scorn coming their way for not being prepared to make important decisions and get rid of Ken, instead saddling us with this ridiculous lame duck season.

I hope they get dragged through the mud all season and the rest of the football public can see them for the fools they are.

They will just conjur up some stupid mental gymnastics and double down

And the happy clappers will buy it

It's been mentioned several times in this thread - a concerning part about post game was that the players seemed unbothered about getting blown out 90+

The only thing they cared for after a game, was to pash Dan while tickling his nuts.

Does anyone have a stat on how many, if any, centre square stoppages Mead had ?

I don’t have the raw number, but he attended 6% of our total centre bounce attendances for the game.

For comparison, Sweet was in there for 84% of our CBA’s, JHF 77%, Drew and Rozee 68%, Wines 61%, Boak and Bergman 16%.
