I've got West Coast in front but only marginally. It is as close to win/ win as you can get.

It was definitely a win/win trade. Both sides will be very happy with what they received.

Many will point to the 2018 premiership as 'proof' of West Coast winning the trade, but Judd had a profound impact at Carlton, and Armfield carved out a decent career for himself as well.

2 in the 6 - 10 range + 1 in the 1 - 5 range?

I hate putting an exact number on it (because it depend on which club he goes to) but yeah something like picks 3 and 9 and a later pick in the teens is probably fair (but wce would want more and the receiving club would want to pay less). Point is he will be one of the most if not the most expensive trade in a decade or two.

Trade value will depend on which club and what assets they hold

If end of 2025 Reid decided he wanted to come back home and said Collingwood / Carlton
the trade value would be extremely lower than if he said Richmond which holds the picks to get it done

the trade value is totally dependent on the team he is traded to

Kennedy becoming West Coasts all time leading goal kicker would suggest he also had a profound impact on the club over many years and the 2018 was the cherry on the cake.

Well yeah, obviously. I wasn't suggesting that 2018 was the only reason West Coast could be considered winners of the trade.

West coast dropped down short term and got Gaff, Nic Nat as well as a result. I think they where much better off for the trade, but Carlton did OK.
It's possible if Judd doesn't go there Carlton get Dustin Martin in 2010, but we will never know.

It is but he won't choose to leave for a team down the bottom (richmond). He will pick a club that he thinks will play finals like most players do. So it depends what club he chooses as to what picks they have but 2 years of futures opens it up.

And this is exactly why I think he will sign with West Coast through to free agency and then weigh his options up after that.

The only clubs that are going to have the capital to trade for him are cellar dwellers.

He's too good a player to waste his career in rebuilding sides.

Thats correct and exactly the point i am trying to make

He would select a team thats in the premiership window and will have late picks
Even taking into consideration 3 years worth of 1st rounders could end up something like 14 , 15 , 17 which would struggle to get you a top 5 pick if traded so the thinking it will be a judd like deal is extremely difficult

Could be a problem for the Cats in a couple of years then if Harley is chasing instant success.

But at least their picks will be top 5 picks. ;)

Might have already been covered, but the rumour doing the rounds in Perth is that talks with Harley Reid about coming to the Bombers for $1.8m/season.

The Bombers have been throwing massive money offers at Reid leaked through rhe media pretty much from since he was drafted.

So will six other Vic clubs.

Yes they will set the market but rhe Eagles have the cap space to match any offer.

If he wants to move home it doesn’t matter if you can match an offer.

Pretty much. While clubs can't trade a player against their will/to any club they like they are hamstrung to whatever the club of choice can muster up.

The rumour doing the rounds right now is he's refusing to sign even a one year extension.

If he doesn't extend by the end of next season he's gone at the end of 2026 imo.

The 'rumour' is that he's been advised to wait until halfway through the season, as per his manager.

It makes no sense to sign one before then.

To be honest, if I'm him it would take a big offer to get me to not leave my signature until half way through 2026 even if I had no interest in leaving Perth.
Yep. He's got 2 years left on his current contract. There's no rush to make a decision.

Essendon would be pretty dumb to make a play for Reid though. More list holes than we do and the trade capital it'd cost would ensure they wouldn't be winning a final for another 10 years.

How is it dumb when rebuilding to get a 20yr old former no1 pick who’s on an elite trajectory and is a sure thing not to be a bust. That’s the exact type of player north/richmond/whoever have been tanking for.

We know Essendon have 2 FRPs this year and 2 2nds thanks to some smart trading. So that’s basically 3FRP from 1 draft (after trading) with no long term repercussions.

Thats a decent package. All things considered.

….

If it happens or doesn’t I’m ambivalent. Essendon has a fair way to go in establishing itself as a competent club before I’ll think we are a destination team.

But purely on the “is it a smart trade” scale. I fail to see how it wouldn’t be

Because due to Dodo's incompetence, your list has a great many holes.

Throwing away a bunch of top picks for one player is inadvisable with the current state of Essendon's list
