Injured in all of rounds 9, 17, 18, and 21?
Yes. Exactly. Bruised foot in round 9. Subbed out with a rib injury sustained late in the 3rd quarter in Round 17, Rib injury got the best of him in round 18 and sustained the serious foot injury in round 21.

Honestly, do your research before posting. Suggesting one of the best young key position players in the afl was a sub 4 times due to not being that good is not one of your finest moments. It shows that you have absolutely no idea just how good he is.

His stats were huge these days. Was tearing it up, shame he got injured

Look forward to next season when the Ginger Buddy kicks 100

Tom Mcdonald was a terrible defender. Because he made horrible decisions. The forward line suited him much better.
That's not really fair. He was a good key defender who finished top 10 in Melbourne's best and fairest for 4 or 5 years straight including at least one 3rd place. I think maybe he was in the All-Australian squad one year but I may be mistaken. Anyway it's not relevant to Petty but I thought I had to fly the flag for McDonald as I think he was being harshly treated there.

Personally I just never rated tom mcdonald as a defender. A little bit why Jake Lever annoys me too. He has really low IQ. I rate Petty higher as a defender than Lever.

It was clearly a game of 'rope-a-dope'.
Melbourne too predictable, just booting it forward with no system, and obviously mental as well.
That's now 4 finals in succession without a win.
Again even with the bombing in the forward line we generated more than enough shots on goal to win, we just didn't convert.

Fritsch and McDonald missing regulation set shots in the dying minutes of the game against Collingwood lost us the game.

I think the midfield is the problem. Blame the forwards all you want, but doesn't help when you have this delivering the ball up the field.

I know for almost a certainty that Melbourne's midfield performed better when Oliver wasnt in the side in 2023, when he missed that chunk of games.

But that's the difference. Teams are smarter than that are look for efficient entries into the forward 50 which generally leads to better success at scoring goals. If it was all about pumping it in, all clubs could add significantly to their inside 50s.

Fritsch and McDonald missing goals....well if they aren't mentally strong enough, well that's an issue for them and teh team as a whole.

You don't lose 4 finals in a row being knocked out by technically better and worse performing teams if you are any good. Must be some serious mental issues under pressure.

By the way, the Pies won the game playing 40 minutes of football Melbourne couldn't cope with.

mental issues under pressure? Fritsch has kicked 6 in a granny. No pressure there. Just skill errors. That's sport. That's why the nba play a series, to determine the best team. The Afl is just 1 game so the better team doesn't always win. I'd back us in a series comfortably. Especially with Petty in the team.

It’s different when you need to perform under higher expectations. If Melbourne make finals next season, they will be facing the prospect of 5 straight loses in finals.

the straight sets thing is totally overstated. by the letter of the law, we finished 4th so we're supposed to lose the first match.
Also, there's no bad teams in finals. We lost by 2 points to Carlton despite being the dominant team. Just couldn't convert. not all losses are the same.

How can something that is a straightforward fact be overstated.

It either happened or didn't.

You did exit in straight sets.

it's not possible to exit in straight sets unless you finish in the top 4.

Also, which team is most likely to exit in straight sets? That's right, 4th! that's a fact.

Half of the top exited in straight sets. people just love saying 'straight sets' but there's a difference between 6-0, 6-0 and 7-6 (13-11) 7-6 (14-12).

We have already sorted deals for Jordan, Grundy and Harmes helping them to there respective clubs.

Meanwhile Adelaide want to play “hardball” on Mcadam because Dees say no to trading Petty?

Really?

Well you did those deals quickly because of a few different reasons

  • you wanted Grundy’s money off your books so pretty much took whatever Sydney were prepared to offer
  • Jordon was unrestricted free agent so just left
  • you wanted picks quickly because you were negotiating with GC to move up the board

The trades were effected quickly because it suited Melbourne’s agenda to do so

In terms of Adelaide - they quickly traded for Burgess and a pick upgrade with GC

What other business are they in a rush to do?

There is almost a full week to go. Assuming we are talking either a future second/third or a pick around 40ish this year - why rush?

Melbourne needed to move quickly for their agenda and Adelaide have no time constraints on theirs. Every one doing as you would expect them to do - trade in their own interest and time

When they are finals all losses are the same. Melbourne keep rolling out the line they were better. Fact is they didn’t have the composure and have lost each final over the past 2 years they have played.

Even last season when late they beat Brisbane convincingly, yet a few weeks later under finals conditions, they lost.

dude, you scraped over all of your finals in close wins with extremely questionable umpiring. Especially the gws game. Even the granny was pro-pies.

You beat us despite our midfield smashing yours and half of our forward line missing and Brayshaw being out in the first 5 mins.

Petty's injury cost us the flag.

1 player doesn't cost you finals.

The (lack of) quality of your forward entries & poor goal kicking was your biggest issue... along with bad team selections.

Sounds like you are angling for a moral victory.

Nobody gives a shit if you should have won or how the game was won.

The game was won and that’s all that matters.

This discussion is not for here. Take it elsewhere.

What was the rush on Harmes? We still got Bulldogs F3

4 injuries in half a season? Must be very injury prone. Scrub that first rounder, you can have our F3 for Petty instead.

You just threw a million at him and he still doesn’t want to head back to SA to play with the Crows.

That’s gotta hurt
If his player agent is even half decent, he will be asking Melb to tear up the existing contract and offer up something close to the Crows offer. Either, you cough up a shitload of extra cash to keep him happy, or you hold him to his contract and he earns 400 or 500K less than he could have next year - that's gonna motivate him to play well!

Either way, that's gotta hurt more!
