Roast Has Opening Round been totally botched?

Just a thought, not about Opening Round but the Round 1 Thursday and Friday games.

Would a better idea be to not feature 4 teams that all played in Opening Round?

Would have been a good opportunity to showcase some other teams to launch their seasons.

I get that Carlton / Richmond is the traditional opener, which is fine, but given they have that have status did Carlton need to feature in Opening Round as well?

Do Collingwood and Sydney need to play Friday night?

(Making an exception for Richmond as the AFL temptation re the Suns and Hardwick would clearly have been too tempting)

This isn’t a shot at any of the clubs involved, it’s the AFL scheduling.

Because a fair chunk - maybe even more than half - of the fans in the Gold Coast, GWS and to a lesser extent Brisbane games were either travelling fans or fans that already lived in those cities.

You wouldn't have gotten the sellouts if the travelling teams were Freo, Port and North Melbourne. There's not several thousand Port fans living on the Gold Coast right now as there are Richmond fans.

Having the 4 away teams from Melbourne was a big mistake

Port should have been one of the away teams. SA fans are more prepared to get on a plane seeing we do it every other weekend.

The WA clubs currently being poor doesn’t help but when they’re back, one of them should also be involved.

Then it will be reasonable.
I disagree on your sentiment RE: the 4 away teams from Melbourne being a mistake.

Collingwood, Richmond and Melbourne made an immense amount of sense.

Carlton on the other hand? That was bs. Should have been Essendon.

The only 2 games locked into dates, but on fluctuating fays are ANZAC Day and ANZAC Eve. Because of this. The 4 teams playing in these games should be in this opening round. Yes, it gives them a 2nd bye. However, If you go from a Sunday game into a bye into a Tuesday game is it really a bye? It's fixing the inequities these teams play when ANZAC Day falls on a Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday.

And all 4 clubs should have their bye around the ANZAC Rds.

And the whole point is for the 4 northern teams to have the focus on them and grow the game. I'm happy for that. I just wish that all 8 that played this week played each other again this week. At least they got Collingwood vs Sydney right.

Brisbane v Port would have gone close. They have a good rivalry and Brisbane can get a big enough crowd by themselves

We mostly agree, the away teams being Victorian, made sense from a fan base perspective and with the long weekend.
Win win.

All I’m saying is remove Carlton from opening round and have a different Victorian team, say Essendon.

Then I wouldn’t have Collingwood / Sydney this Friday night coming, I’d have a St Kilda or Geelong vs whoever.

It’s only a minor tweak but gives other teams some focus for the launch of their seasons.

By doing the above it’s now shared the attention around 11-12 teams instead of already doing double ups.

I suppose Carlton was 'rewarded' with a major primetime TV slot because of their more successful season instead of Essendon last year.

Interesting points of view. Anecdotally, it was the least excited I've been for the start of a season that I can remember. That includes the Covid years.

That's just an utter lie if you ask me. Where is the hype and energy she's talking about?

There is no way it was a success with the majority of fan bases. Does she think we're all stupid?

I certainly didn't feel any hype of energy at all, quite the contrary. The Swans v Demons game just felt like your stock standard Friday night game you see in round 16. Not to mention the game itself was terrible.

Chris Scott echoed my thoughts:
“My point is don’t pretend it’s not a compromise, of course it is.”

Laura Kane solidified my thoughts on the AFL:
“If you asked anyone today they’d probably say yes, all the eight clubs that participated, everyone up there,” she said.
Translation:
If you ask the people involved that are getting the advantage of 2 in season byes they’d say yes to do it again.
We are a business first ,fair sporting competition is way down the list.

Most would have been flatter than a can of Pepsi (or whatever your fizzy poison is) that’s been opened and left outside for a week. They couldn’t have given a flying fart in space about the games just gone. The real stuff starts this weekend for them.

Only one NRL game was played in Sydney over the weekend which drew a crowd of 29k. Swans had 40k. Giants 21k.

In Brisbane, NRL had 32k while the AFL had 33k. Gold Coast NRL had 14k while the AFL 22k.

AFL got the dates right it was a success. Maybe the issue for those south of the border is that the northern states have to compete with the NRL. Shying away from the competition proves nothing.
And in Melbourne the NRL got 20k, AFL zero.

i get the whole move into NRL territory for the weekend.
And perhaps with it being a long weekend in Vic, this was the week not to have games here

But why not have Freo and WCE host a couple of games too
Ade and Port as well.

and a final game in Tas as we lead up to the team there.

Round "zero" is a dumb concept.
Opening round outside Vic isn't a bad concept imo.

so i'd say partly botched.

Yep I fully support the concept as long as it’s one in all in and doesn’t further compromise the integrity any further.
If it’s a non vic week like you’ve offered have existing games plus games in SA and WA and the two extra vic teams play each other in tassies (hawks vs kangaroos)

would have worked well with the WA time zone too.

Crows v Saints
Port v Cats
WCE v Dons
Freo v Dogs
Kang v Hawks makes sense for Tas too. They had a public holiday as well yday, so ideal for a game of footy. Probably could have got some vic fans down too

this makes to much sense for the AFL to understand

1. It wasnt aimed at you. They sacrificed some interest in Melbourne for a huge amount of interest in the Northern states.
2. On Monday no one will care about this issue, but the jump-start in the Northern states could be huge for their attendances all year.

But but other clubs started one week early and I can’t see out of my own bubble to understand the benefit this does for the game in the northern states and therefor the game nationally.
