According to this source, the average height of males between 20-30 is

179.0 Australia
174.2 South Korea
172.7 Taiwan
172.1 Hong Kong
171.8 China
170.8 Singapore
169.0 Thailand
166.1 North Korea
165.0 Vietnam
164.2 Philippines
163.0 Indonesia
162.5 Cambodia

Of course in these populous countries there are large numbers of people who buck the averages, but as a rule of thumb the stereotype holds true - Asians are smaller than westerners. It doesn't help that football isn't quite the game for all shapes and sizes that it once was.

Yes - that's a different area though. The post I responded to mentioned that SEA don't have the body for contact sports, not whether SEA are tall enough to compete in the AFL.

You think they'd be more stocky than us on average, given the respective diets? Or physically stronger, pound for pound?

Good on the guys who pointed out Les Fong. If he played in the modern era he would have had a massive AFL career.

Its all got to do with diary in the diet. Countries that cosume high amounts of diary products generally have a tall population.

isn't Daniel Kerr part asian?

Fairly certain his dad was a British Indian. Don't think he's Sri Lankan, but I could be wrong.

EDIT: Wikipedia confirms his dads from Calcutta. Really not sure where the Lankan thing came from cause I've heard it before.

Matthew Stokes is half Asian [Malaysian ?]

Filipino from what I've been told.

According to one of the "source's" (the self proclaimed "researcher") sources, the average male Chinese height is 172.7cm and the average male height in the U.S.A. is 175.3cm. Can't see how the Americans will be ever able to field internationally competitive basketball teams.:)

Sean Yoshiura becomes first Japanese born player to be drafted into AFL

Born in Japan to a Japanese father and a white Australian mother, Sean Yoshiura and his family moved to Australia when he was seven. The 184cm, 68kg wingman started playing when he was nine, after watching a Brisbane Lions match on TV. He was signed by the Brisbane Lions as a rookie late last year using their Queensland priority pick. He will be using number 45.

Japan produces first VFL players as bright future predicted for the JAFL

In a tremendous milestone for the development of international Australian Football, Japanese pair Tsuyoshi Kase (on the left in adjacent photo) and Michito Sakaki (to the right) will play for Bendigo in the Victorian Football League in 2006. This possibility has been suggested in several media reports recently but former head of the Japan AFL, Troy Beard, has confirmed that both players will be listed with Bendigo.

LOL @ the Josh Thurgood nomination early on in the thread!

Tony Liberatore had a few questions he asked Peter Bell on the field one day, anybody remember what they were? :)
