Toast Hawkins and Varcoe

On behalf of the Varcoe knockers, me included, we were right to call him out on previous poor performances, but the guy can certainly play when he gets involved, as he did Saturday.
The best I've seen him play for the Cats, and most effective game for the club, IMO.

Apart from his 3 goals.
Two plays, the short pass to Selwood ,and the handpass to Ling, both resulting in Goals, don't know if I missed another one, but seriously great game.

10 contested possessions for a man that doesn't know how to play on the inside wasn't bad either.

Again, he did what the team and the coaches needed him to do. He was and continues to be in the team for those very reasons.

Hawkins was fantastic. I was silent and shattered for a few minutes when Pods went down but then I composed myself at halftime into thinking that if Hawkins is the player we all know he's capable of being, this would be the time he steps up, and help get us home. And boy did he.

Travis was fantastic too, his gut running is so crucial to the side.

Hopefully both get the credit they deserve.

I'll start with Varcoe, as I've criticised him far more than Hawkins. Terrific finishing from him which is his greatest strength. Amazing start, although he went quiet in the second quarter I thought he remained involved, which has been a big query on him. Was willing to win the ball critically as well. I think we'll be remembering that third goal for some time.

Happy to be proven wrong. Ecstatic in fact.

Hawkins, well what to say. One of the great key forward performances in a Grand Final. We've been theorising that all he needed was confidence, he surely delivered on that. If he can maintain that commitment and energy, all I'll say to opposition key defenders is good luck, because you're going to need it.

Awesome, awesome performance. Once the kicking comes good (and it will) we could have an absolute superstar on our hands.

No, no. Varcoe doesn't have a work rate. Or courage (so that couldn't have been him running backwards for a hospital ball) just ask Patrick Bateman.

They will try and take the gloss away from Tomahawk's performance as Reid was unfit but watch the highlights there and it's mostly body work and positioning and Reid is the only tall defender with the weight to stand a chance on Hawkins and Mick knew all to well that Maxwell, O'brien were outsized to even make the change.
Reid was getting thrown around like a school boy:D Who was it that said he's 105kg?
You'd think he needs to put on a heap of upper body strength but it's all in the thighs and core through the torso and Hawkins is a massive unit.
He's likely to get stronger but his leaping is very impressive. We haven't had two blokes in Pods and Hawkins who are able to out-jump most for a very long time....since Ablett senior.

Add another high leaping prodigy in Menzel and it's going to trouble any defense in the league.

when he is the main focal point he seems to really gain confidence (similarly in that nab cup game when pods went down).

I believe they asked Tom about it and he said no,Moons has been working with him, makes sense if you look at what was going on between them at half time GF day.

Oh, that's interesting!

Glad to hear that Mooney has been passing on his wisdom while he can, and I loved seeing them talking at half time, but I'm still not sure he's the most qualified to give advice on how to kick for goal ;)

A lot of bagging of Malthouse on the lateness of getting Reid off Hawkins. Thought he had no option though, Tarrant had his hands full with SJ who was burning through everyone else. Malthouse needed two Tarrants.

Calling Mr Patrick Bateman. Are you there Patrick?

*apologies if you are on holidays* (I'll just assume one of your kids are using your name to post on the main board. Note: They're trolling mostly)

was just watching highlights from grand final and it occured to me that varcoe handpassed out to ling who snapped on left for last goal...in 09 varcoe handpassed to chapman who snapped on left.. ahh the memories..

If you look closely, you'll see it was Shannon Byrnes to Varcoe to Chapman in the 09', yes it was that little fella Shan Shan at the bottom!:D

Varcoe did a lot of incredible work with effective tap-ons and handball right through the finals. Amazing awareness.
And who can forget THAT goal?
I'm now a convert!

Maybe i should change my username to Byrnes2Varcoe2Chapman ;)

Can't forget Max diving into that pack as if he was trying to stop a grenade from hitting the ground.

When you watch the slow-mo Moons was a good chance to take that grab. Could you imagine if Moons lined to win the game from a similar spot in which he missed the sitter in 08....
