On behalf of the Varcoe knockers, me included, we were right to call him out on previous poor performances, but the guy can certainly play when he gets involved, as he did Saturday.
The best I've seen him play for the Cats, and most effective game for the club, IMO.
Apart from his 3 goals.
Two plays, the short pass to Selwood ,and the handpass to Ling, both resulting in Goals, don't know if I missed another one, but seriously great game.

Hawkins was fantastic. I was silent and shattered for a few minutes when Pods went down but then I composed myself at halftime into thinking that if Hawkins is the player we all know he's capable of being, this would be the time he steps up, and help get us home. And boy did he.
Travis was fantastic too, his gut running is so crucial to the side.
Hopefully both get the credit they deserve.
Varcoe's third goal was a classic....started deep in the back 50....gut running....toe poke..more gut running...then the " laconic" left foot goal.....
Sensational.
Incredible work rate in the last qtr of a GF
No, no. Varcoe doesn't have a work rate. Or courage (so that couldn't have been him running backwards for a hospital ball) just ask Patrick Bateman.
Hawkins, well what to say. One of the great key forward performances in a Grand Final. We've been theorising that all he needed was confidence, he surely delivered on that. If he can maintain that commitment and energy, all I'll say to opposition key defenders is good luck, because you're going to need it.
Does anyone know if Wayne Carey did come in and mentor Tom, or did they just talk about doing it?
I believe they asked Tom about it and he said no,Moons has been working with him, makes sense if you look at what was going on between them at half time GF day.
They will try and take the gloss away from Tomahawk's performance as Reid was unfit but watch the highlights there and it's mostly body work and positioning and Reid is the only tall defender with the weight to stand a chance on Hawkins and Mick knew all to well that Maxwell, O'brien were outsized to even make the change.
Reid was getting thrown around like a school boy Who was it that said he's 105kg?
You'd think he needs to put on a heap of upper body strength but it's all in the thighs and core through the torso and Hawkins is a massive unit.
He's likely to get stronger but his leaping is very impressive. We haven't had two blokes in Pods and Hawkins who are able to out-jump most for a very long time....since Ablett senior.
Add another high leaping prodigy in Menzel and it's going to trouble any defense in the league.
Wow. CLASSICJust found this!

was just watching highlights from grand final and it occured to me that varcoe handpassed out to ling who snapped on left for last goal...in 09 varcoe handpassed to chapman who snapped on left.. ahh the memories..
Varcoe did a lot of incredible work with effective tap-ons and handball right through the finals. Amazing awareness.was just watching highlights from grand final and it occured to me that varcoe handpassed out to ling who snapped on left for last goal...in 09 varcoe handpassed to chapman who snapped on left.. ahh the memories..
If you look closely, you'll see it was Shannon Byrnes to Varcoe to Chapman in the 09', yes it was that little fella Shan Shan at the bottom!
