Gunston (early second)

Can everyone who keeps drastically overestimating Gunston's value based on his form from 7-8 years ago (and forgetting he's a UFA) please ask themselves how hard they would yell at Mark McKenzie on here if he sent pick 22 to another club for a 31 year old unrestricted free agent who has had two consecutive injury hampered seasons.

when hes been fit and played hes performed extremely well, assuming her comes back and has a strong finish to the year

almost happened last trade period, unlikely and will be good to keep him but as a general principle if we get fair value for any of our older players while rebuilding wed be negligent not to look at it.
We can look at it all we want, it’s Breust that won’t. 😂

Not saying we'd definitely get an early second for Gunston, but we'd only be angry at McKenzie because it's short term thinking. For a side in their premiership window that desperately needs what Gunston can offer it's probably a better use of a second round pick than a kid who might be a best 22 player in 5 or 6 years. Norf got 30 for Higgins.

Like you said though, he's a UFA and I doubt he gets offered the type of contract that'd net decent compensation particularly at his age.

I wonder if Clarko ends up coaching GWS if that would see Wingard more interested in the move?

You could probably raise the same question with Bruest and Gunston.

I'm not advocating we push any of them out, but I don't think we'd really want to play all three in the forward half together next year... Especially with what O'Meara is doing this year as a high half forward. He has been brilliant.

Bruest continues to offer the most value to us IMO. Plays every week, hits the scoreboard and offers the most defensive pressure. He remains as consistent as any in the toughest position to play in the game, let alone in a bottom six team. He's going to push 40 goals this year, incredible effort if he gets it.

Fair points - however Geelong's list management isn't what I would template however - it is the AFL team building equivalent of treading water when lost at sea. I think someone like Breust who is still one of the better small forwards in the competition and could easily play for another 2-3 seasons due to a lack of injury you wouldn't begrudge paying a bit of a premium for should you be contending. However Gunner would have more of a question mark on his fitness and he's gettable for free picks wise. I just think there is a tendency to drastically overrate every Hawthorn player and drastically underrate opposition players on here. Love Gunner, want him to stay - but big picture I would fall off my chair if we got anything >pick 35-40 for him if a team was going to trade due to losing a free agent themselves. Even then I would not expect the kind of deal Gunner would get would water down any possible compensation pick Brisbane would get for McStay.

Never know, I feel like the AFL is going to become a quagmire of teams that are getting too old (it already is) but still "competing" who might find it hard to resist the idea of topping up with a player who has the big game credentials of Gunston.

Hawthorn's average list age when we won our last flag with our "too old, too slow" team was 24.3 - with the same list this season we'd be the 11th oldest. Richmond as an example have 11 players aged 29 or over on their list, Geelong have 16, we had 6. Teams these days are holding on to players for longer because it keeps them competitive, I can see it continuing to happen.

Majority don't rate our youth until it smacks them in the head.

I am fine for the greater footballing world to underrate our youth at their peril. Overestimating the value of our injured 30+ players is another thing though.

I guess stranger things have happened - and if Gunston had been fit and firing and kicking 30-40 goals per season then there's every chance he could get a second rounder out of a desperate team if he wasn't a UFA. When you consider Omith yielded us a end of 3rd round compensation pick with a 2 year deal though - if Gunner left somewhere on a 1 year deal I can't imagine the AFL giving us even an end of 3rd rounder. As such I don't think opposition clubs would put a second rounder price on him either.

Have always liked him. Vic Metro captain too. Always up against it in that midfield. Been forced to play HFF. Wouldn't cost us much either.
XOH a cheaper version of bruhn maybe? Not sure if we rated him but with Callaghan etc coming through going to struggle for opportunities.

Brodie Kemp is a player I have interest in, he’s a big bodied mid, who is being thrown all over the place due to not be able to break into Carlton’s star studded midfield.

He grew up a Hawk supporter, wouldn’t cost much.

Would take him in a heartbeat. Is playing down back, and will go out again when they get defenders back. The kid is a quality mid. Sell him midfield time and he is a real possibility.

Don't think he'd come too cheap tbh

Blues would want something decent for him for sure.
