Hawks - Bubble Bursting or One Poor Night

Re: See the Hawks fall

Hawthorn has a come a long way in a short space of time. They've risen from 14th place in Round 17, 2006 to 2nd place in Round 15, 2007. They might've peaked on their run and find things tough from here on. You look at their draw and most of the remaining games are virtual knock-out finals. They'll be doing well to hold their place. (NM, Ess, Bris, Port, WB, Syd)

The bird brains will see this as a chance to gloat. Their memories only go back about 3 months and they've forgotten the giant strides the team has made. But most Hawk fans are pretty happy with 2007 and hope for a finals victory.

I don't think they've played "above themselves" in 2007. I think the team has played hard and has played well as a unit, but there is still plenty of improvement left. They are still one of the youngest teams in the comp. Without Boyle and Williams up forward, they are relying on a couple of 20 year olds to kick a score.

Every time Hawthorn has lost this year, the experts have labelled it as a "reality check"
If you think about it, when is a loss NOT a reality check?

They only reason that Hawthorn losses are described as a reality check is because they're young and they are not rated as contenders by most people. So it's just a lazy description. It doesn't really mean anything. The players have never gotten ahead of themselves. They haven't forgotten the pain of the previous three years and carried on like they were flag certainties in 2007.

The same "experts" who talk about reality checks are probably the same people who denigrated Geelong in 2006 and said they needed a clean out, said there was no speed, no flair, no leadership, no character, the coach was hopeless, etc, etc. Yep, those experts are now lining up to praise the Cats.

I disagree that the intensity was "finals-like" on Saturday night. I thought Hawthorn were fairly lacklustre and the full-strength St Kilda laboured the victory. It was hardly convincing stuff. The intensity was nowhere near the same level as the Collingwood game in Round 14. The young Hawks coped with Collingwood's intensity fairly well that night.

The Saints are a good side, more experienced and battle-hardened than Hawthorn. They are also running into some good form, so our three goal defeat isn't the end of the world. I'd still rather be in our shoes than in their shoes.

Great stuff Chewy.

Re: See the Hawks fall

you could describe players like Kelly as classy, Johnson definitely, but where the Cats are doing well is depth, the Hawks/Saints etc 18th/19th player is nowhere near that of the Cats.

5 or so quality father/son selections is making a huge difference for them in terms of list depth, much like the Lions. All is equal in draft land....

Sons of talented but ultimetely unsuccessful players.

Its up to them to succeed where their fathers failed

Re: See the Hawks fall

Like I said, the Adelaide game has marked the end of the Hawks season. Everything went just to script like I thought it would.

Don't you have more pressing things to worry about your own club?

I mean what does it suggest when you're thumped by 90 points and beaten by a club who you suggest, in this thread, are just making up the numbers?

Re: See the Hawks fall

It would be good if all Hawks fans kept on topic and stopped raising side issues. If you want to do that, do it in another thread.

I would just like to state that Hawthorn are not up to it this year and their season was effectively ended the night they got pumped to the crows.

I agree. Whether it be injuries or form or whatever makes no difference - the Hawks were never going to win it this year. Young sides almost always fall over at the end of the season. Takes a few years for most players to be able to play out a full season (plus finals).

Hawks fans should be happy because surely they must know they are a real chance over the next few years. Losing a few games now matters little.

Gameplan is ordinary. Don't back themselves to win one on one's. And too many soft HBF types, who whilst looking great in an easy game, will consistently go missing in hot games, or worse, flat out dog it and cost goals. Of this group, Guerra is my favorite. Absolute squib.

Midfield is ok, forward half has a good structure but their backline is ordinary.

Speaking of squibs, loved Harris's dive against Lewis in the second term.

All class. :thumbsu:

Seriously, if your wanting to square up, probably not best to go at the little crazy ****er who slapped your arses stupid all day. We have players who don't go hard enough all the time. You have one on every line.

You know this.

You really want to start an argument about who was the softer team today? Because I don't think you do...

We were softer my miles. I even commented on that fact myself. If we're not careful with our development, we're going to become a very soft footy club.

Still, doesn't excuse Harris taking a 'Rivaldo-i'm-clutching-my-eye-even-though-the-ball-hit-me-on-the-knee' dive.

I don't think we are a flag contender but we have earned our current spot on the ladder by beating 5 out of the 7 teams we have played that are currently in the 8. We have a pretty tough draw playing teams that are either in the 8 or just out and desperate to win. Unlike collingwood and port power who both play carlton, melbourne and richmond twice making it a lot easier for those sides to make top 4.

Port have only beaten 3 teams currently in the 8 and only 1 of them since round 4 and that was a badly out of form and injury depleted west coast. Not convinced about them yet.
Port will get found out in the finals. They may be the first team in a while to go out in straight sets.

1 from 4 is hardly inspiring stuff from a team that was looking so good earlier on in the year. Lose this week and are in real danger of missing out altogether.

He was hit in the face against Freo and one of his eyes was almost swelled shut, the swelling came down but he got another hit in the face against the Dees. I think he would still be quite sore, not sure if there was much contact there or not but Harris is not one of our players that goes for a dive.

The bubble has burst & if they lose to Essendon this week, may not even make the top 8. 6 years without finals for the hawks.

big deal.

Team goes OK when they stay relitevely injury free.

Team starts losing when they get key injuries

Bam. Hit the nail on the head, Pess. Same thing happened to the Eagles a few weeks back, to the Dogs on Friday night, to the Saints early in the season, and will continue to happen to any other team bashed up by injury.

Hawks are probably fortunate they clocked up enough wins to just about ensure Finals action when things were rosy in their injury department. Maybe this is just the trough they needed to have after such a sustained peak. They'll be back, I've no doubt, and they could very well do some real damage in September.
