Autopsy Hawks vs Roos - tear it apart here

if anyones good at the ole video-editing, would be great to get another proper look at the free kicks and Buddy holding ... i dont usually go nuts but i sure did today watching some of that crap

did anyone else have butterflies just realising the fact after how many years we have finally got an actually monster defender again ?
I just had to pinch myself, its an unreal feeling knowing we now actually have someone who can stand toe-to-toe and win contest after contest after contest.

just wish he were a few years younger and we got him last year

A blind man could be forgiven for thinking he was watching the Majak Daw One Man Show.

Still wanting to know what Hale's KPI's are.

Lindsey Thomas kick 5 of the most undeserving goals you'll ever see then over-celebrated them as if he did a heap of hard work and deserved them. Piss off.

Not enough love for Osborne in this thread. Continually putting in 3rd, 4th and 5th efforts to win the ball or do the best thing for the team.

Good game from S. Thompson. When the umpires let you get away with anything and everything, why not take blatant swings at the forwards arms, hold him back from from going for the ball and taking his feet out from under him? Would be stupid not to take the advantages given to you on a platter by the umpires.

15-30 free kick from the umpires including 2-10 in the 4th quarter. GAGF AFLUA. You are blatant ****ing cheats and you still lost. Hope those tears taste extra bitter this week.

Nice one, Bailey! Nice one, son! Nice one, Bailey, let's have another one. HEY!

I hate losing to you lot!

Even though we outplayed you today we weren't good enough in front of goal.

I was very sorry to see Cyril come off injured, he was in scintillating form and hope he makes a speedy recovery.

I gotta say I loved Scott Thompson giving Buddy a bath.

Good luck for the rest of the season, hopefully we'll meet up in September and we can reverse the result today.
Good luck for the rest of the year and i hope we do meet you in the finals ;)

Some interesting stats from Greg Baum's review on The Age site. (Thanks to the poster on the other thread for pointing it out).

It's good reading.

OFF TARGET
Lance Franklin kicked 0.5 - his most behinds without a goal in any game in his career.
INSIDE GOING
The Hawks finished with 16 fewer inside-50s than the Kangaroos, but still won the game - their worst inside-50 differential in any game since round 8, 2010.
IN THE CLEAR
Daniel Wells finished with a career-high 10 clearances, he won eight of them in the first half.
SMALL NUMBERS
Grant Birchall finished with a season-low 19 disposals - 10 fewer than he won in any game across the first four rounds.
ACCURATE ONES
The Hawks were cleaner inside the forward 50. They recorded a kicking efficiency of 57% in the forward 50 compared to North Melbourne's 42%.

I'm very rarely putting negative posts about Buddy on here, but i think he deserved it today, sorry if i upset some people.

Hoping he was just having an off day.

I thought he played poorly and was dumb, but geez he got manhandled half a dozen times that should have been frees.

You're right he should have got a few frees and it wasn't fair i went at buddy when quite a few players effort wasn't the best.

Buddy has a problem marking a ball..Even when GIVEN to him waist height,he still can;t the take the ball..His thumbs, are a problem,I have watched him attempting to mark, at any height, overhead, low, still cant HOLD the ruddy thing..He definitely has a problem with his hands, just watch him attempting to take it..He can't seem able to bend his thumbs..

On todays form you would have to look at dropping Hodgey, but he's allowed to have an off day, it just so happened that many of his mates did too.

Lake, Cyril were great, and we will miss Cyril, hope it's not too long, I love watching him tantalize the opposition. A special mention to Brad Hill. He was fantastic today and should get a NAB Rising Star nomination, if not this week in the near future.

Weird game but to be honest it is win and that is what the record books say. We were so poor at the stoppages and we know that is it usual so that can be classed a bad day. Ruck wise, we need to make a call. Who is the main man - decide and then make them work at being a numb 1 ruck man at the best team in the league. We have accepted inferior play in this critical part for too long.

Mitchell, Hodge, Guerra, Birchall were all held today and that says a lot about the effort North put in. Sometimes you have to accept it but I think these key players should have been something to change the momentum. I also think the efforts of the "random" fixtures so far thi season seemed to have caught up with us a little too.

We won. Upwards and onwards

A lot can be said about certain sides when they having an average day. When I look at Geelong, Sydney, Hawthorn, when they have an average/off day these sides end up losing by small margins or they find a way to win. Can't help but think if we switched the insides 50 and clearance stats, we would have lost by 30-60 points.

Well done and good luck with rest of your season.

Personally I don't give a **** about how we win as long as we win. I'm sure they'll go through ther reviews and point out they played dumb football. But this time last year this board went into meltdown after "dogging it" and being 2-3 after the loss to Sydney. 4-1 means were not playing catch up and if we're lucky we could be 10-1 going into the bye.

This game reminded me of the Richmond game last year. The only real difference is that North weren't able to punish us in front of goal. We were quite lucky to get away with a win with so many of our better players playing such bad games. Hopefully the fact we didn't lose this game doesn't mean it still can't be a reality check and get us to pull the finger out and play the footy we all know we're capable of.

Firstly, Lance Franklin.

Today was really disappointing from the big guy, he let his emotions get to him and he just couldn't take a clean possession. The thing that highlighted his day for me was when he tried to take a chest mark in a pack contest. Was never going to happen. Expend the dukes buddy.Expect him to come back next week and perform as he wouldn't be happy with his game. Full credit to Thompson who was great, however if Buddy kicks straight then you'd call that an even contest.

Rioli kept us in it, I have no doubt that without him we'd have lost by 5+ goals. He constantly kept us in the game when it looked like North would break the game open. His burst out of the middle and then goal really gave us hope after north piled on a couple of quick goals early in the last.

Lake was huge for us, he reads the ball so well and we should sign him up as a coach for whenever he decides to hang up the boots. He could teach a lot of our guys how to judge the flight and take contested marks.

Hill was the other guy who stood up today. He worked incredibly hard, especially in the final term when the game was there to be won and ran all day which was great. Hopefully he can take that confidence into next week and continue to improve.

I actually think it came down to luck today - we were so lucky we managed to hold the Roos off in that last minute and a half. If the Roos had won, I'd be saying the saying the same thing. The score was even.

Franklin was useless today. 0.5? And he wants more money... Not going to happen at this rate. He's talented, but not consistent. Mitchell wasn't as clean as he normally is.

Lake was useful in the back. Welcome to the club! He's looking really fit/lean isn't he? I think Puopolo is on the rise.. the kid's great to watch. He has so many doubters but he's speed and willingness to get into the contest is what this team needs. Not afraid to put his head down. Hill impressed me once again.

Cyril. He got us over the line today. Such a damn shame the injury happened. I'll keep my hopes up it's a minor one.. but it looked really bad.

Most frustrating, messy display of footy Ive seen in a while. We were lucky to run away with it in the dying seconds. Hopefully we turn things around next week.

What are you guys on about?! Buddy was the match winner! We would've lost without his 0.5!

...

:p LOL jks. He was absolutely terrible today. 13 goals or better next week otherwise I say we delist him and sign Fevola up...

We were pretty ordinary today and North were very good. I'm still unsure how we pulled off the win, but kudos to the guys for taking the four points.

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned, but a couple of acts stood out to me today. (was watching on my phone, so i'm sure i missed a lot more) I remember Lake, after a fairly intense period in our back line, had taken a mark/spoil against a North player (think it was Petrie) and the ball came back out and over the boundary line. The camera cut to him and he was breathing really hard and just started retching as the camera moved of him. That tells me that he still needs a lot of match fitness and after a great effort from him today, I can't wait to see a truly match fit Lake. Will be/already is a great addition to the team.

Also Pup, whilst not having a huge amount of disposals, i saw that guy chase so hard all day. I remember one in particular where he must have chased, whilst the ball moved through about four players, almost half the field. He ended up tackling a North player around out forward 50. Didn't get a HTB or even a turn over i don't think, but the effort was fantastic! Wasn't his only good chase for the day either.

hahaha classic - just saw the Daw tackle .. FULLY 100% did not touch Burger until the ball was gone .. amazing call and hilarious more that the commentary was so excited that he got near the ball they ignored the fact it was an incorrect call. Stunning error

Lucky we only played a shit team in North. If we had played a team with ability we would have been in trouble.

Good work by the umpires. Their effort today should ensure they will never umpire a GF.

Well done to Brian Lake. Saved a few goals. Great work by Big Max Bailey, 3 goals and good in the ruck.
I have to disagree with you on this, North looked very good tonight IMO..
North Melbourne came into the season as finals contenders once again, but their tough draw against Collinwood, Geelong, and Sydney has them at one win in 2013...But fact is, despite losing all those three games so far in 2013, North has won more quarters than they’ve lost, which suggests the team isn’t too far away....
The reason for us winning tonight was Lake and Cyril!!!

Wasn't it called play on?
lol just checked - actually at first i thought it was paid then advantage given - i cant tell wot the ump says and ofcourse the commentary are just ejaculating at it - ofcourse, Burger is grabbed without the ball so in fact it should have been HIS free for holding without it and there is a free goal they got that they should not have.

if anyone can advise on a free gif sharing site for big files (20meg or so) i have just created an animated gif ;)

Was called play on, then I think he paid high against Puopolo which was BS.
Technically was holding the man against Daw, but am happy for those to be play on because he launched himself whilst Burger had the ball and had no way of pulling out of the tackle.

I'm not sure you can teach someone how to read the ball off the boot and judge flight. I throw the aerobie (like a frisbie) a bit and as soon as it leaves a persons hands I'm running to where it's going to land but it's not something I've been able to teach, though I do believe it's something that can be learnt through practise. I do think it's just one of those talents people have, Lake has it in spades.
