You’d think if there is a mid season draft brought in like it’s been rumoured to be next year then players might be more open to announcing their decision before their contract is over. At the moment players keep coy until the end so they can get more $$$ and stay at the club there at. Players also want to get to the club of their choice not the 2nd or 3rd preference. This is obviously why Shiel was so coy up until the end.
I'm not sure we'll see a player announce they're leaving before a season is done anytime soon (outside of a very public falling out preceding it).

There's just not that much to be gained by the player but plenty more to be lost. Currently the absence of a signature on a new contract with their current club is more than enough to flag to rival clubs that they are open to exploring their options, and to unnerve their current club enough to increase their own offers. Announcing that they're leaving during the season will only serve to make things awkward for the player at his current club for the rest of the season.

Before they could be considered to just be keeping a good poker face in their contract negotiations and potentially always planning to stay at their current club - even when it seems abundantly clear they're going. While afterwards it is now known that the player doesn't want to be at their current club. And regardless of their level of commitment mentally and physically to their current club in playing out that season trying to win games and possibly a flag, there will always be doubts by their teammates, coaches and club supporters.

Many in the media currently claim that a player announcing ahead of time that they are planning to exercise their rights to free agency and leave their current club would be met with respect and be celebrated for their honesty and bravery in doing so. Which may just be the case, at least at the start. But I don't think anyone couldn't see the footy media quickly turning to sensationalist articles/comments the very moment that player didn't appear to give 100% effort in every moment of every game. The constant media droning over will he or won't he re-sign with his current club would just be swapped out for constant over-analysis of playing footage and sound grabs from interviews. Everything they say, did or didn't do would be scrutinised just as much as before, if not more so.

On that basis, if we don't know he is ours then he probably isn't. I'm just going to wait and see how it pans out ;)

I wish it was that easy, Brishawk!

A curve ball can always be thrown. New suiters will enter the picture, different pitches and options will become available. There will always be new intel for Coniglio to consider. I suppose this is where the term 'race' was born.

Brodie Kemp gone down with a potentially serious knee injury during a game of school footy apparently.

If we are in fact looking at him, there may be a silver lining with it potentially being that tiny bit easier to get him somewhere closer to our first pick.
If he’s done a knee we can scratch him off the list of potentials with our first pick.

We’re not flush with junior talent, we need to be making every post a winner.

Hope we are still (if we were) looking at Will Brodie. He’s got a lot of Joey Kennedy about him, really playing well now that he’s stringing together repeat games.

Someone start the Welcome to Hawthorn thread!

I wonder if this pushes him back into the 2nd Round? If so & he’s there for our 2nd, it may push us to chase Finn with 3rds

Because we need him to be playing ASAP & couldn’t wait to mend him for 12 months?
Because we aren’t in a position to use probably the highest pick we’ve had for 10 years on a kid with knee recovery head of him.

Makes zero sense.

Ah, I thought someone had suggested that we pick him up if he slipped to our 2nd Pick.

There are others like Serong, Young we have interest in. Perhaps as has been suggested we also manoeuvre for a discounted second rounder for a long term injured Kemp. Anyway just pure speculation.

Depending on how bad the knee injury is and if our team feel he is the best player still on the board and that he’ll be okay then IMO you still take him. Keep in mind the last time we had a high lottery pick and didn’t take a player because of a long term knee injury it blew up in our face when we selected Mitch Thorp instead of Joel Selwood. Yeah yeah I know I can’t stand him either and history shows that we did alright afterwards but just imagine for a second we didn’t win any of the proceeding 4 premierships after that draft bungle. We would have been reminded of it over and over again.

Anyways Abasi you say we can’t afford to draft a kid predicted to go in the top 10 due to injury but would you have felt the same way if Coniglio had of done his ACL rather than his meniscus? Obviously there would be different factors like we might already have arrangements with Coniglio and what not but I would’ve thought if we couldn’t afford to draft an injured kid then what would make it any different signing an injured free agent?

There’s a big difference with Cogs. If you’re committed to him, you don’t turn your back on him.
If you did turn your back on him your rep as a club would be done.

Kemp is in the draft. Different kettle of fish.

You take best available.

I agree but what if Kemp is the best available and it’s clear he’s best available? As I mentioned previously we faced the same decision in 2006 and we bungled it. Depending on where we pick and who’s left on the board it will be a decision we’ll be faced with. All I know is all this top 10 talent getting hurt will push Maginness further up teams draft boards and it’s not what we want at all.

Plus Kemp isn’t the only youngster we’re looking at, it’s a sea of choices whereas with cogs, we’ve been chasing him for a while as a established player in our medium to long term plans.
Btw, a tid bit I’ve come across is that we’ll hit the Whitfield button if Cogs thing falls through. This is why his name keeps getting mentioned on here imo.

Of course we will have back up plans but I feel Coniglio’s decision is absolutely crucial to our post-dynasty rebuild.

We have landed some big trades but we have had to pay for those. Mitchell is a superstar, Jaeger is a gun and Chad needs time but there is no doubt watching us this year what we lack is the true A graders.

In Mitchell and a fit and firing Wingard we have two (jury out on Chad at Hawthorn but he’s capable of that). Add Coniglio we have 3. It makes the world of difference.

Get Coniglio and I can see us contending next year. Without him I can’t. Nervous couple months
