Had a nice look at the highlight reels and while Shiel and Scully appear to have one 'trick' Wingard has a box of tricks

Question is now how much improvement can we get quickly from Box Hill
Only Moore and Hannrahan will come through from the current box Hill players. Also pittonet really started dominating at VFL level late in the year and was BOG in the grand final for mine. Rucks take time to come on but he looks to have turned the corner now and will gives us very good ruck depth. Big Mitch Lewis might be a player if he could only start clunking his marks , a work in progress.

The only concern I have over our list makeup is the 8-9 30 yearolds regardless of the quality of those players they become forced turnovers in the future thus giving little flexibility when looking at replacements. For example Roughy would require being replaced like for like as we are already screaming out for KPP's. I'm not the best at making my point but say we have the opportunity to get Cogs next year or a Rough replacement how do you strike a balance when no one is likely to fall from our mids and the other is likely to retire.
Overplayed, Roughead, McEvoy, Burgoyne, Frawley, Birchall, Smith, Stratton, Puopolo and Henderson are our 30 players next year the major are just 30 and have a good 3 years left to find their replacement.

Absolutely. Can argue that our three ins are long term replacements for Birchall, Pop, and Hendo.

Rucks are fine.

Rough, Burgoyne, and Stratton the 3 we don’t have ready replacements for, but there’s glimpses across the list of players that might develop into those roles (the Burgoyne and Stratton ‘roles’ being the easiest to replace).

Got to laugh at The Age/ Fairfax's doubling down on their poor info and trying to say that every trade that happened yesterday was 1 MEGADEAL. :D

We don't we say the Megadeal took 2 weeks to unfold and involved 42 players and 18 clubs.

Key is to nail a FA next year. Cogs or Kelly must be the target.

As Tops said, this is a 3-4 year process. If Scully is fit, we’ve absolutely nailed this part of it.

Perhaps we do have a pick swap happening, and that’s why we were comfortable giving Port our 2nd as a sweetener.

In: Jack Scrimshaw, Tom Scully, Chad Wingard, 2019 third-round pick, 2019 fourth-round pick

Out: Ryan Burton, Taylor Duryea, picks 15, 35, 2019 third-round pick, 2019 fourth-round pick

Win: Adding a dual All Australian, a gun outside runner and a former top-10 pick

Lose: Parting ways with a 21-year-old defender capable of playing 200 games

2018 draft picks: 53, 90

What couldn't they get done? Plenty. Going right back to Rory Sloane and continuing with Tom Lynch, Dylan Shiel and Steven May. The Hawks were on the end of rare criticism for a quiet start to the Trade Period, but roared home to again be a big player.

Verdict: Sold the farm for Wingard, including fan favourite Burton and this year's first-round pick, but the dual All Australian has the potential, at age 25, to be a top-10 player in the competition. His relationship with new coach Alastair Clarkson might be the key to him returning to his previous heights. The Scully acquisition seems daylight robbery on the surface, but there is mystery around whether his ankle will ever be the same. If he gets back to his gut-busting best then the 2009 No.1 selection is the Trade Period's biggest bargain.Scrimshaw, the No.7 choice in 2016, looms as Grant Birchall's successor and may even slot into Burton's old role, but he, too, comes with baggage. Duryea was a great clubman and dual premiership player, but can be covered. - Marc McGowan

Rating: 8/10
They had a go for us for not winning all the players we were linked to. The fact we were in contention is good and they’ve made that a negative.

They’ve also used the term ‘sold the farm’ for Wingard so we know he’s going to be a gun for us.

GC got 6/10
GWS 5/10

How was GC not the worst this trade period.

GC should be 2/10
GWS 4/10

Yep agreed.

Also most of those guys are no longer the key to our success. I would suggest McEvoy, Smith and Stratton are still in our top 10 players, but the other are not.

Roughead and Frawley are important structurally, so we need to focus on finding some KPP replacements, but what's to say we can't do that in one off-season.

I watch the trade low down last night and dal santo and Johnson had us finishing 14th and 15th even after getting wingard and Scully. They have no idea.

WoW. Thanks Topiary for all your intel over the trade period. :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Seems my little joke trade a few days ago regarding BB wasn't ACTUALLY miles offffffffff and lunacy like some posters suggested, it was pretty damm close hehe. :p

Really excited about the next couple of years now with these 3 new guys + Cogs next year and the final missing piece, KPF. :)

The scully trade is the one that makes me feel unsure about how well we've done.
Could end up amazing or a bust. Worth a punt with that pick though

Wingard could prove as handy as Jaegar or Tom long term. I’m stoked we have brought in this class.

Scrimshaw will need lots of love. Wonder who will mentor him the most. Birch is the obvious candidate position wise

So is this the guy that has a bad attitude? The guy that apparently rubs some port players up the wrong way? Gee for a 25 year old, someone who’s job is to play footy and only footy, he comes across extremely level headed and genuine.

His family, culture and desire to improve his footy seems most important in his life... sounds like a terrific lad.

I think some clubs definitely recruit to a style or are looking for a 'type' of player, and it varies hugely. If you don't care particularly about having a rounded young fella, who's intelligent if not necessarily highly educated, who has interests outside of the game and takes an interest in the world, who's cultural, who doesn't mind showing personality....
But instead focus on footy heads, who have very little going on outside trying to make it in the game, who for want of a better word are more 'jock' than rounded, then a guy like Chad might be outside your comfort zone. Even his 'mates' at the PAFC probably struggled to walk the line between being close to boofheads like Tex Walker and appreciating openly an indigenous boy for whom there are many MANY things just as important as the game.

Hawthorn, especially in its time under Clarko, has been unafraid to bring in kids who have more going on than just footy, and foster a club atmosphere based around self improvement throughout your entire life whereby football plays one very important role - but also as a platform for you to search out what the rest of your life will encompass.

If you watch the video that was posted on this thread with Morrison and Burton out for lunch, you definitely see a a kid in Ryan who fits the good looking all world at sports his whole life mold.....but perhaps doesn't have much time or respect for intellectualizing or those who might. Not saying he isn't a great kid, but he's a 'type'.

Chad is a different 'type', one who I think will bring a richness and warmth of spirit to the group.
Not at all surprised that Clarko is a fan of his in more ways than one.

How many do you want? 10? problem for me is finding opportunities for them, but I guess injuries is the opportunity

The beautiful thing about their prediction is that if they are correct, just imagine the melts in trade week 2019 when we use our top 10 pick to snare a gun player on top of grabbing Cogs as a free agent.

Its a bit easier when you don't have to worry about a complete midfield rebuild
Noticed the quality Talls in this trade cost less to trade for then the quality mids

I reckon that pick could be traded to get back in to this draft.

Imagine the salt then?!!

Media salt is classic post trade week. Spent the whole time saying hawks wouldn’t get anyone, we clean up (including the most talented player on the market) and now they reckon we overpaid and will struggle next year.

I loved this trade period for the following reasons:

1. Wingard. He’s a superstar. Gone from my favourite non hawks to the player I will love watching most of all. I reckon he takes his talent to a new level under Clarko and with Burgoyne mentoring. Confident

2. Scully. Wowee. I said pre trade period I wanted Gaff and Wingard - a free elite runner and the Chad. By trading nothing for Scully he is essentially a free agent. Brilliant

3. Our Scully deal allowed GWS to play hard ball and get their pound of flesh out of Essendon

4. Media melts

The most amusing thing about GWS' Scully salary dump was that it put them in the box seat in their negotiations with Dodoro. If Dodoro was aware that they had to move Shiel to be within TPP limits he would have gone to the death knell knowing they would capitulate for pick 9 only (or adding a steak knife).
However having unloaded Lobb Setterfield and Scully, GWS held out until Dodoro blinked.
Scully to the Hawks was a great strategic move by GWS and Wright.
I understand why they will spin the ankle story but our medical team checked Scully out and would be confident he will get back to top fitness. The rehab may take a while but I think we will do very well out of this trade.

So painful watching Lloyd and Cornes in that trade wrap show. Is there 2 more anti Hawthorn people than those 2? The only team this trade period to add 2 genuine A graders although Lobb has potential to be (along with Hogan). Great job Hawks!

i personally think Fremantle did the best out of the trade period and we were the 2nd best in trade period, they got Colyer, Hogan and Lobb all best 22 players from round 1, Colyer was really good for Essendon, attacking mid, Hogan a 50 goal key forward and Lobb one of the better Tall Forw/Rucks in the AFL atm, plus they got a heap of picks in the draft, so they won on both fronts, whereas we added 2 stars and a speculative youngster and lost our draft position, still a great trade period for us, but clearly 2nd imo.

Some decisions soon to be made on out of contract players

Schoenmakers - Wrighty said he will stay
Howe - 2yr deal speculated, no official announcement
Lovell - ???
Pittonet - ???
Miles - ??
Jones - ???
Mirra - ???
Henderson - ???
Hanrahan - ?? (was he extended??)
Brand - ????
Whitecross - ???

I think Richmond did better than anyone because they've got exactly what they needed and lost nothing but depth on the wrong side of 25, with a decent hand at the table to bring in some young talent.

Freo losing Neale will hurt though. If Fyfe gets any kind of injury spell then you could see them competing hard for the spoon with the Suns.

So in 2017 after a straight sets exit, we got rid of our top 2 in the best and fairest, basically left the draft (in terms of top picks), finished the first half of the season at 17th. We still finished 12th. This season, we finished 4th, had a similar exit to 2016, but have overall improved our list. Because whether you think Burton being traded is good or bad for the long term, Wingard next year will be better than Burton this year. So our list next year is better than last year. The only 30+ players that are vital to our structure are Stratton, McEvoy and Smith. The others are all probably better than their VFL counterparts at the moment, but they didn't finish top 10 in the BnF and aren't super vital in our structure. So how will this season be worse than 2017 in terms of ladder position? I mean we might finish 14th or 15th, but based on current information, it is a highly illogical prediction.
