Just like last years thread, whatever Barrett has to say is not Hawthorn in the media.

Couldn’t care less for his shit takes, they don’t belong here.

Still crazy to me that Grundy was playing VFL last year. Literally any other team apart from the Dees he would be the number 1 ruck yet the Dees chose to trade for him when they already had Gawn, arguably the best ruckman of all time.

Be like the Hawks trading for Lockett from the Saints just after Dunstall kicked another 100 goals!

I get why people are so pleased with the captaincy potential of Moore and Day (in fact for the first time in ages we have a fair number of young players with strong leadership qualities). Bloody brilliant.

What I don’t get is why we look to the future to the extent that we seem to miss how much Sicily has grown into the role this year. He’s not a caretaker captain, he’s our captain now and he’s leading by example in the most courageous way. To me he is the standout choice for now and deserves far more credit.

Agreed and I am not for a moment suggesting that Sicily should have to relinquish it. Just for mine, Moore is the standout captain in waiting.

No offense to SMC but he is hardly in Locketts league.

I'm talking about having the best player in a specialist position like ruck (ie Gawn) and then recruiting the second best player in that position (Grundy).

We had Dunstall (arguably the best full forward ever) and then recruited SMC (probably not even in the top 50 full forwards list). SMC was the very definition of a journeyman.

Can only speak for myself here, but as a pro-Moore Captain, it is absolutely nothing against Sic, who I agree is doing a good job. It's that Moore just has that something, in the way he speaks, makes you truly believe we're heading in the right direction. I just feel he'll push others more than anyone.

Certainly won't complain if Sic holds the role a couple more years, but I do think it should be Moore sooner rather than later.

I know people are big on Will Day - but Dylan Moore is the next heart and soul captain of this club and I won’t hear otherwise.
Two great candidates. I'd favour Day because I think he can take his game to that absolute top level and there's value in having a captain like that, but Moore is a natural and very impressive leader and communicator.

Haven't watched it but good to see Crawf popping up in the media from time to time again. Seemed to almost fall off the face of the world footy wise since the footy show. Such a talent footy wise and media, feel like he couldve easily given coaching a crack or been a stalwart of the media

Maybe you avoid FTA television like the plague, and I don’t blame you, but Crawf is seemingly always on the TV doing something. Or did you mean footy related TV specifically?

This is precisely why these types of rating systems are so good though. They're just based on the data. It challenges preconceived ideas or feelings like that a couple of the best skilled players couldn't possibly exist in a bottom 4 team, or that players with reputations for being highly or poorly skilled couldn't be going through a patch of good/bad form.
Problem is Hoyne pointed out that a long kick to a pack, which could 100% be the best option AND be perfectly executed will be rated as a negative if the opposition gets it, and a positive if your team gets it. So a players rating can be determined not by them making the correct decision and hitting the target but by how good the foward/defender are.

Agreed, Sicily is our next premiership captain. Whether that is this year of next year remains to be seen.

Sure, but we don't rate a player overall on a single disposal in isolation. It might be used as an example of some of their work or an indication of what they're capable of but never the basis of whether or not they're a good kick on a broader scale.

They could perform dozens of very similar kicks over the course of a season and that's where the average result of their kicks reveal how good they are at it. And if it so happens that they are executing perfect long kicks every time that just happen to have poor outcomes because their teammates can't win one on ones or take a mark then either they are having an improbable run of bad luck or it suggests they aren't actually picking the right options no matter how good the kick looks.

It was a but tongue in cheek and he was not second best but better than you think. He finished 8th in the Coleman the year 1994 prior to coming to us with 68 goals. Notably ahead of Wayne Carey David Schwarz Tony Lockett (ok he only played 10 games for 56 goals!) and Matthew Richardson. Obviously with 4 clubs agree a journeyman.
