News Hawthorn Racism Review - No player name speculation - opposition posters tread very carefully

Wrong. Hawks did what they had to do by the rules of the AFL.
Correct. For reference below, once the HFC had the report outlining serious allegations they were duty bound by the AFL’s protocol to hand over the report to the AFL integrity unit.

I will pin this post, as it seems to be a constant query.

Can we please stop questioning everyone and anyone at the club. This stuff that has been reported is not something that would be widely known because it does paint the picture of three specific people engaging in this behaviour. I don't think other people should be implicated until all the details come out. So, we need to stop speculating and questioning people's integrity by association or the relationship (we may think) they have or had with Clarkson and co.

Clarkson and Fagan wouldn’t just take the detailed actions for no reason. In their minds their must have been very strong reasons and very bad situations involved. Otherwise they need life bans from any AFL involvement as does anyone else involved.
Yeh, a “win at all costs” mentality.

I am shocked saddened and in disbelieve that this would occur at any time in any sporting club. However I will await more information, the guilty must be dealt with the BUT i will not tar everyone at the club with the same brush. Those who have had no part in this and are stunned by these allegations as we all are will need our support more than ever.

If everything (or really anything) alleged in this article is true, it is staggering beyond measure that any employer would seek to control the personal and family lives of its employees to the extent described.
If the contents of the article were just ' internet rumours' involving any employer in any industry I would dismiss them as ridiculous because the allegations overstep the acceptable actions of an employer so significantly.
I am really struggling to get my head around the idea that this could possibly be true, yet at this stage there is no reason to believe that it isn't.

Every person deserves the right to reply and Clarkson and Fagan will be next. I am not sure how either will survive based on the level of detail in this report .

The Hawks have had 2 weeks with this report in their hands. Why has it taken so long for a statement? No wonder the ABC have run the story .

Hodge on SEN has just said he didn’t know any of this was going on.

So they published the allegations as though they were gospel anyway ???

Russell Jackson is one of the finest journalists in Australia. Let's not start questioning the journalists - who would have all had lawyers copiously review every word they've written to make sure it's backed up. The club choosing to not reply isn't a sign of anything.

You’re joking right? This is the clubs review.
This is a story on the review with Jackson talking to the three ex players and their families.
The contents of the article will be in the review, but it is not the entirety.

I think it's important to note the difference.

Awful day for the club.

Slightly deviating from this - but Brad Scott was sharing, after the Joe Daniher missing a final thing, that Leigh Matthews once instructed players not to have unprotected sex with partners over Christmas to stop pregnancies impacting finals. Apparently Scott joked to Matthews that he couldn’t control them to that extent and Matthews was not impressed. Clearly this level of demented control over players has been around for some time.

They are reporting contents of a report we commissioned - what is so hard to comprehend about that?

I'm fairly sure what was reported was an independent review from the ABC, not the report we've conducted

at least the anecdotes were

It is obviously an explosive report, and the club has tabled it with the AFL so that is where it has been sitting. They have been stewing over it and doing due diligence as well as planning damage control. The AFL's history with racism...

I don't actually think the ABC had any access to the official review documents - the article is very clear to mention "it is believed" and other distancing terminology whenever they refer to the HFC reviews contents

makes no difference to how awful it all is but I agree that it's an important distinction to note

It’s an interview with people based on what they’ve informed the report. So the allegations are going to be in the report regardless - so it’s not as if the ABC are saying anything that won’t be public in the weeks to come anyway. Again it’s weird that people are focussing their ire on the ABC or Russell Jackson - denial is fun I guess.

Burt is the only other official named outside Clarko and Fagan and he has since departed.
Makes it a bit easier. It would be even more destructive if the accused were still with us. Thankful for small mercies. Jeff needs to go now, the club needs to do the right things but needs to be seen to be doing the right things. Jeffs head on a pike would be a good start.

It will be interesting to see the response from Clark, Fagan etc.
If they believe they have been defamed, would they consider legal action? If they don't believe the events described are being represented fairly then they certainly have that right. They have a lot at stake, career wise.

Unfortunately, it means lots of negative publicity, especially if court cases occur. However, the problem we have to deal is straight forward and much of it, Sam/new broom is already in place. Supporters need to give the club the chance to address the problems/issues and the club needs to honour that. The fact the club commissioned the report signals to me it is serious.

If you're the sort that takes solace from other folks woes being worse, North and Lions have a much, much tougher problem.

Opening paragraphs of the story are pretty definitive:

An external review commissioned by the Hawthorn Football Club will reveal allegations that key figures at the AFL club demanded the separation of young First Nations players from their partners, and pressured one couple to terminate a pregnancy for the sake of the player's career.

The review document, handed to Hawthorn's senior management two weeks ago and now with the AFL integrity unit, will allege that club staff involved include four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson and former assistant Chris Fagan, now the coach of the Brisbane Lions.

Uses the word ‘will’ repeatedly. I’d suggest that Jackson has read the report.

Some real Andrew Bolt/Rowan Dean-type shit ''Oh, the ABC is biased lefty media"

**** off

Well said. You sum up many of our thoughts right now.

”At this stage“ is key isn’t ? We await the responses.

Yes, I had heard that story years ago. In fact, if my recall is correct Matthews still stands by the principle (that may be wrong, but he certainly doesn't deny the instruction). As far from normal as that level of attempted control is, it is still in a totally different realm to asking an employee to terminate a pregnancy - just mind blowing.
