Maybe roaming around the place was his role.
A few things I noticed when watching the replay:
  • Shoey would start high inside 50 and lead up to the ball carrier and then we would take a long option to Roughy deep.
  • The above happened often enough that I think it was a tactic to isolate Roughy. It seemed to work as roughy got a lot of one v ones.
  • Shoey also took his man to stoppages on the wing and even as far as half back (see the third quarter). He stood about 10-15 m further forward of the stoppage where he was basically in no mans land i.e. he wan't going to get a quick handball out and wasn't far enough away to get a quick kick forward. I assume he was instructed to drag his opponent away from Gunston and Roughy. Whether he was deliberately told to stand where he can have no impact (so that his man is out of the play), I have no idea.
  • Because of where he was standing in these situations he basically looked lost as there was no way to impact the contest. If the ball was moved forward he would basically run back towards goal along side it. On one occasion he got the ball and kicked a well weighted kick inside 50 to Gunston's advantage (Gunston went a one hander and dropped it). The rest of the time he just wasn't in a position to receive it.
  • One one occasion Jordan Roughhead left him to go third man up in the contest and he didn't follow. Instructions? Lack of awareness? Risk taking? No idea.
  • On one occasion where he was positioned behind the contest he was able to grab the footy and put in a long kick to Gunston which cleared the loose defenders sitting behind the ball. Play led to a goal.
  • One the few occasions we kicked to Shoey on the lead he did reasonably well. When we kicked to him stationary he was not as effective.
  • Great piece of play where he lead up to the wing, marked and then turned and kicked the ball to Poppy who marked and kicked it to roughy for a goal was great. The long and low trajectory of his kicking could be a real weapon.
  • Another highlight was Shoey leading up to Halfback flank for a kicking. Shoey crashes the pack, drops the mark but recovers immediately and quickly handballs to Spang and we move it quickly down the end of the field.
  • Generally was sound at tackling and tying the ball up when it was in his area but due to aforementioned positioning issues he wasn't always able to get to contests. Had two handballs and a kick
  • Kicking was generally pretty good.
So a few highlights and a few issues regarding positioning that we can't know are related to instructions or bad decision making. To Interpret/Guess I would say his role was to start high inside 50 and lead up at the ball carrier. He was instructed (I believe) to draw his man away from Gunston so we could isolate Gunston at CHF from stoppages on the wing.

Be interesting to see how he goes with more responsibility with Gunston out this week. I assume he will have a different role.

This game should have been a 1.10 or 1.40 starting time. Terrible time-slot. We did get 49,000 in Round 2 2011 and that was a twilight game as well so who knows hopefully we can get a good crowd as this is our second last home game of the year.

Jonathon Ceglar had a solid game for Box Hill so expect him to come into consideration for selection. Gunston may miss 2-3 weeks perhaps more so we need to find a replacement. The late inclusions in Langford and Duryea were promising and both players will stay in the side. Give Woodward another full game and Simpkin was solid in the last quarter as the sub and should keep his spot for another week.

Schoey took a good mark on the lead out in front. Good strong mark. Turned quickly and kicked it 60m and hit a target in the forward pocket.

He's a forward. That's where he must now cut his teeth.

2-3 weeks for Gunston according to the injury report and surprisingly it is his knee and not ankle, that is actually a better result, could be back for the Geelong game and back in round 23 at latest.

Hawks need to find a team balance for this game where we can win convincingly and still rest some stars for the finals. Just hope the Paul Snoozeball style the Demons play gets badly exposed and we as a team can help kill off the gameplans that are killing our great game as a spectacle.

That would be great, but, in addition, if it killed the story that Roos is the super coach of the AFL, and showed he is NOT in Clarko's league would be even better.

That's not too bad. It could have been worse. Hopefully he's back for the Geelong game.

time for Shoenmakers to stand up. guess we will find out if he really can play forward.

I have done both medial knee strains and medial ankle strains, the knee is a much better result, they come to hand reasonably quickly and he could very well play against Freo but i'd say Geelong is the likely result.

Ankles can linger and drag on, a low grade knee strain is pretty straight forward.

It's astounding that all these people think Shoey needs to go out.

Isn't is just..
Well I would assume with Jack out for 2-3 weeks, that the wishes of many will be granted. Schoey goes forward.
We just need to get past Melbourne and then Brian is back for Freo. (Assuming he is picked, hey Tim Watson!)
Ryan will be the most likely choice to take Jack's place for those few weeks.

Agreed. I think if it was Freo over here he'd play, but no doubt they will be conservative with finals around the corner. I'm actually quietly confident we can beat them over there. Freo are one of those teams we match up on really well. It'll be interesting to see who they replace Gunston with as he's probably the most versatile player we have other than Roughy.

Closest I can think of is Whitecross unfortunately. Would they bring Ceglar in and play him and Hale as forward/ruck?

Can James Siciliy be called up at all? Happy to stand corrected, but hasn't he be doing pretty well at Box Hill? Granted it would be a big call up for him, but most of our rookies have done well when thrown in the deep end.

Hope Gunston can get back to his best sooner rather than later.

Has anyone heard/seen Lake during his suspension. I'm hoping the 4 weeks was a god send by allowing him time to get his body right and fitness up.

A fit Lake would be an asset come finals.

I think his form has dropped off recently, think he is tired more than anything so would doubt he would get a game.

Lake was on the 7 footy coverage prior to the $wines game, said that the time off would be a good thing for his fitness and that he had to train hard to get his spot back in the team due to letting the leadership down. Sounds like he is committed to being back in full force - hope he delivers!

Apparently is as fit as he has been this year, also desperate to get out there and make amends for his brain fade against North Melbourne.

There is bloke called Ryan Shoenmakers apparently that will slot straight in. Have you watched any Hawks games this year?

In the team I meant - not in the forward line. Plus until Lake gets back I'd imagine Shoey will play on a key forward.
