Okay everyone, let's just take a second to stop freaking out about our lack of quality tall defenders.

Take a deep breath in... and a breath out.
Good.:thumbsu:

Lets just just assume that we have traded for a Good, Strong Key Position Defender over the trade week, whether it is Tarrant, Maguire, Lake, Warnock or anyone else, it doesn't matter.

All of a sudden our defense isn't looking too shabby.

We have a very good pick in this years draft and I would like to see it used on the best available talent without worrying about position.

With the alleged lack of talent this year, I would hate to see us taking a player too high just so we can fill a hole in our list.

Who should we take?

I'll get it started by saying that I want us to get Ben Cunnignton.
(Height: 186cm, Weight: 84kg, DOB: 30/06/91 )
Is listed as a medium forward but is more of a tough inside and outside midfielder with good skills, decision making , poise and also can kick goals.

I'll pass it over to you now.

Thoughts?

From reading on here and looking at draft predictions, three names come up most associated with the Hawks most frequently: Cunnington, Stevens and Talia.

For me its Talia. With so many question marks about Croad, even if we do trade for a defender, we need to have a young back up plan. Shoenmakers is showing promise but we can't rely solely on him.

Talia has the frame and experience to play CHB and while he may lack a bit of polish and tends to play all over the place from the video I watched, that can be ironed out through coaching.

In this order:

Martin (pure class - but probably won't be available)
Talia (the best CHB prospect)
Rohan (x-factor and speed that we could do with)
Cunnington (a great player, but probably not as good as Martin and the above two have other factors that make them a higher necessity)

My thoughts..

Let's keep #9 and draft the best available midfielder, whether that Rohan, or Martin if we are lucky.

With #25, let's trade for a ruckman. He doesn't have to be elite, he just needs to be better than Taylor/Renouf... someone like Hampson or even Seaby.

Using the last of our picks.. let's use them (plus possibly a fringe player) to target Matt Maguire. We don't NEED an elite FB like Lake, just one that can hold down a spot. Shoenmakers looks like he has a huge amount of potential, I can see him and Gilham holding down the key posts in 5 years time. However, for a quick fix.. Maguire would be perfect.. has been playing without injury concern in the reserves for the majority of the year.. will come at a cheap price you would expect with Hudghton not even in the Best 22 at the moment.

Hampson and Seaby? Are they really better than Taykor or Ronouf? Dont waste pick 25.

I agree that we should draft the best possible player with pick 9.

'let's not forget our ruck combo of 08 was 4th in th eleague for hit-outs to advantage....Taylor / Cambo

Seaby (*cough* ****en hack) and Hampson...please

Spot on, Id absolutley love to get Martin as I think he is the best player in the draft (better than Scully) but he will not last past pick 5.. Would love it if Vardy slipped to our second pick which would give us a good young ruckman/forward but it is also unlikely that he will last that long.. From what I have heard we are very keen on Tapscott and Cunnington..

NO NO NO to anymore developign 18 year old youngsters.

Our window with Mitchell (26) Hodge (26) Sewell (26) Bateman (27) is in the enxt 3 years.

Tuck Muston Moss Rioli Roguhy lewis Franko Morton Kennedy Thorp Schoenamkers Dowler are more than enough developing youngsters on the one list that wiull serve us well for the enxt 10 years.

We need minimum one key back ASAP. Preferably we should be seeking 2.

Schooner is 2-3 years muscle size and weight size from holding down a key back job. Gillo is ok as our second key back. T Murph is not a key back.

Current situation as it stands we have 1 defensive player in Gilham next seaosn that would be an automatic selection.

Birchall is a runner not a fighter.
Brown is half back flank at best.

If Hawthorn dont recruit some key defense for next season we are useless.

Little point in just repeating the names already listed above so one from left field. How about Colyer with pick 9? From the championship vision I have seen, this guy could step up next year and have an impact at AFL level as an outside mid/small forward. Will be lower in many's considerations due to his height but for mine he looks very busy and all class.
For our list, we have a surplus of rangy midfield types. Birch, Musto, Young are all tall ouside mids with booming kicks and pace. Morton, Tuck are tall utilities.
Drafting Colyer would be succession planning for Changa's role in years to come as well as recruiting another small forward to free Cyril for more midfield time.

Our track record shows we draft for position.

While pick 9 is on the table - I do not expect that it will be used. I'd expect our attempts to get Lake will fail as the Doggies won't trade with us and any trade with Freo involving Pick 9 and Tarrant would be a disaster. Tarrant is at best worth a second rounder considering his age. Drum does not fill the brief as KPD.

Ultimately I think we will look to draft a mature body backman from VFL - SANFL e.g Coad or Markovic with a late pick as insurance.

Pick 9 ought be used to get who ever fits the bill as quick outside mid with good skills to run the lines.

WHY is everyone so hell-bent on using pick 9 in the draft??
I don't know much about it this year, but by all reports it's quite shallow. Plus, we have good young defenders in Schoey and Lisle who were drafted last year and even Gilham has plenty left in him.

IMO there is no need to take a punt on an unproven youngster when we could cough up pick 9 + a surplus player (Thorpe) and get a proven gun like Lake or (to a lesser extent) Gibson.

Let's be honest, Schoey is still at least two years away from taking on the gorilla forwards and I think we'd just be setting ourselves back by not bringing in a proven performer at AFL level.

My two bob.

At this stage there is nothing to suggest Lisle will become a key defender.

I doubt Lake will leave the Dogs and Gibson is not really a gorilla defender, even though he battles above his size and weight.

I'm with you lickmerocks... we need to mount a run at a few premierships while we have the opportunity.

trade aggressively to get a key defender that can slot into the team immediately, free campbell up to play in the ruck.

OR go with renouf/taylor in the ruck in 2010 and make campbell lose some bulk over the preseason to play permanently in the backline next year.

We can't afford to stuff around with our backline selections next year.

It's a good point, but Gibson would come very cheap and is more than capable of holding down the key forwards.

The discussion will become much more interesting following the trade period. I don't see any good reason to hang on to our draft picks, and Pelchen is hardly the type to give them away cheaply.

Honestly, if we fail to attain a ready made key defender in the trade period then Pelchen needs to be moved on. A lot of talk that he is very difficult to trade with and is always trying to put forward unreasonable trades.

Who is this Martin that everyone talking about, is there any profile or video on him?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTjp4ROxszk

There is no chance he will slide to pick 9 unfortunately! 187cm tough insdie/outside midfielder with beautiful skills on both feet, probably the best kick in the draft, quick without being lightning.. Named centre in the All Australian team after the championships..
