And I thought that this whole thing was about to blow over again ... I really think that the AFL want this saga to remain front and centre in the face of the media, sponsors and increasingly dis-enchanted supporters.

You know what shits me about this too - does this imply Hird knows which players took what? How does he really know who is lying?

!!!!!!
Yea ... stupid on his part (Hirds) because it undermines his previous Pell like position. Puts him at central city of knowing exactly what was going down ...

... the matrix is cracking...

Surprised this isn't bigger news. Hard to gauge what media/fans will pick up on sometimes. I would've thought a coach who has spent the past 3 years on the front page for everything he has said accusing two of his former players of being lying drug cheats would make waves in a sport where Andrew Walker's hat gets into circulation.

Guessing AFL called its buddies at the Age to let it slide, and it hurts the narrative the HUN has been pushing.

I just read Darren Lehmann's book where he touched on Shane Warne's misdemeanour with taking a banned substance and being suspended for a year just prior to the 2003 World Cup.

Boof says that the one thing he cannot understand is why Warne didn't check before using the diuretic pill. Lehmann claims that every Australian cricketer was clear on the fact that if they were thinking of using any substance outside their approved list, then they had a number to call where they could get a yes or a no answer. Simple as that.

Now, this was 10 years prior to the Essendon saga, so you have to ask yourself why Essendon officials and players were so unclear as to the processes in accordance with the WADA code. It's not rocket science. Players, here's your list. If the substance doesn't appear on the list, then ask questions.

And here's the bottom line. If you can't even identify what substance you are using, DON'T TAKE IT. How difficult can that be for anyone to understand?

If Hird knew what they were taking, he is guilty as hell. If he didn't know, as he claims, then he is still guilty of being negligent in his duty of care for the players, as well as transgressing the WADA code by not making appropriate checks. Either way, he is not, nor can he ever be, considered an innocent party.

The question remains if the AFL and/or Essendon Football Club had schooled the players in WADA requirements. Somebody is to blame for these players not being aware of their obligations, as they claim. Someone is to blame, so who was it? The annoying thing out of all of this is that after nearly 4 years, these questions have still not been answered.

McD said that yes, both the AFL & ASADA had repeatedly provided those players training on the AFL and WADA requirements.

This was at a senate estimates hearing. On record, same as the CAS tribunal hearing outcomes.

I remember an anecdote from Peter Bell about calling club doctor while on a cruise in regards to a seasickness tablet.

So it appears that in general AFL players taking anything outside the club would know to check.

Therefore the issue relates to a matter of trust in the club staff by the players in what they take inside the club is thought not to need such enquiries as it has "approved" by club medical staff. In the context of a football club this does not surprise me despite the WADA code. Guessing it was not emphasised during the education process that the clubs approval is irrelevant all that matters is the WADA list.

The players put their trust in a shambolic unprofessional nature of their clubs medical, coaching, high performance staff and in a management system where the coach was regarded as a Demi-God and a snake oil salesman like Dank was trusted with players health and medical treatments.

Multiple times a year by the AFL and the club doctor. Every time ASADA turn up for a sample.

At some point it will click in peoples' minds that the players knowingly took drugs which were not cleared by the club doctor and deliberately chose not to reveal the injections and pills when ASADA asked.

It's not that complicated. Warnie was cheating; Essendon were cheating.

Both got caught with their hand in the cookie jar and tried to bullshit their way out of it.

You must wonder what the media really want.
Golden boy comes out with a totally different version than what he has previously drivelled.
After years of we are innocent, the truth will come out, he is now accusing some of his players of lying to ASADA and avoiding punishment.
If innocent why were there players lying, why did they need to lie, what were they hiding, how come he wants to talk about it now?
Why are the media not crawling all over this ?

because the media know the general public are sick of this saga and want to finally move on. maybe the HTB should take note

This is the bit that EFC and AFL don't want discussed, hence the blackout.

Quick, to the bat-phone, that UK Daily Mirror journo might have a real story to run with!!

That is true Mext, it has been an overload, I can speak for myself in saying I don't want an airbrushed version being remembered and that is what keeps me interested.
I think the HTB thinks alike, the milk is spilt and we should move on but the defensive nature of EFC and the players has kept everyone focussed.
The bad news is I suspect there is lots more scandal to come and no one is going anywhere now until an insider spills there guts and we have a fly on the wall view of what happened.
Nothing else will suffice but that as there has been so much subterfuge it has brought out the cynic in everyone.
To move on the full story is needed, are we going to get it. Who knows. Let's hope we do .
Think it would die a quick death once The story comes out.

They still publish articles on the whole thing because people are still interested in the train wreck that is Hird/Dank/Essendon/34 players. People say they aren't interested, but still look each time as slowly, but surely, more and more pieces of the jigsaw come out. It's human nature to look at the mess, but claim that you're above looking.

It's like the posters who get in this forum and complain about "why is this still relevant" or "it's time to move on", yet they are in the thread reading the articles.
