* Ablett Senior
* Exciting attacking style during the 90s
* Colours appealed to me more than any other Melbourne club. Flirted with the idea of barracking for the Blues for a while but the insipid unimaginative Guernsey made me think better of it.
*A real separate identity that indistinguishable nondescript suburbs from Melbourne simply don't have.
* The only drawback is that I can't stand domesticated cats but like Bob Hope's film love interest once said,'Nobody's perfect'. Besides I kinda warmed to the 80s/90s WEG drawn cat.

I chose Richmond because the tiger was my favourite animal and because there were several players at the time who shared the same first name as me (including one very popular player). My dad (not born in this country) chose Geelong because he wanted to be different and not barrack for a Melbourne-based Victorian club. My grandma chose Hawthorn because that's where she lived when she first moved to Australia and used to watch the Hawks play down at Glenferrie.

I chose the Eagles early in the '95 season (without knowing about their recent flag successes - I knew the Bombers won in '93 because a family friend one day had the photo framed on their wall, but knew nothing about the '94 season). The few years before that, the Swans had been crap, we'd been living in Victoria, and only recently got a television. I was aware my parents liked the Swans but it wasn't pushed or ubiquitous or terribly identifiable at that point in time. He had no living Swans mates by then. We moved to NSW in mid-'95, but I didn't attend a game until the '98 pre-season. Recognition of my father's passion for the Swans wasn't all that noticeable until the '96 prelim, so I was able to pick my own team before outside intervention, like attending the odd Swans game or seeing them weekly on television, was feasible.

My family moved over from Manchester, England back in 99. In a two team town we were massive Man Utd fans. United were successful and City were rubbish.

So when we arrived in WA we were all told about the mighty successful Eagles and how s**t the Dockers were. We decided to see how the other side lives and support the underdog. I was 12 yrs old... 20yrs later Freo still haven't had any success but thank God I'm not an Eagles supporter.
Yeh, seems like you really ended up on the better side there :drunk:

I think it's going to be less common in Melbourne in years to come for kids to just automatically support their parents' team(s), especially if their parents support a less successful club.

If my kids want to support Geelong, great. Not going to make them though. And you can already see with my oldest starting primary school, there's a very strong chance that their friends are going to have more say than me.

And now United are shit and City are successful..

Back in the 70's my Ma took my siblings and I to games at Claremont oval to watch the mighty Tigers play.
This is how I became a Claremont man. This is also why, as much as the modern AFL supporter finds it hard to believe, I am a Claremont man as much as someone who goes for Collingwood, Essendon, Footscray et al is a supporter or identifies with their teams.

I barrack for Freo and WCE whenb I watch them, but they aren't my first footy love.

I'd say mostly indoctrination. You won't see too many kids support a completely different team from their parents.

I'm one. Mum is Richmond, Dad is Western Bulldogs. Mates at school were all Essendon, uncle on Mum's side has always been Essendon. 2016/17 got me thinking about what if I had gone with one of my parents' teams. Having said that, I know a crazy amount of passionate Dons fans and very little WB or Richmond fans that are keen on going to the footy.
