How do fans decide which team they support?

How many Freo supporters jumped ship from WCE? And from Crows to Port. Sydney to GWS. How many would admit it? That's what I don't understand. Does it mean they could jump ship again to a third team?
I never barracked for WC, western suburbs club. If Swans came in I'd almost certainly support them. It won't be a decision, it'll just happen.

Weird concept you think like that.
Why assume whole familes barrack for same team?
I know some do but geez, my own family has about has 7 different clubs covered.
My Mum never really followed footy but she like cats so her nominal team were the Cats so you could almost count it 8 clubs covered.

I think this is the case for most families I've met. Always people with different teams.

I'm a Tigs fan but my partner goes for Crom. Their father goes for Dees and two of their siblings go for Port :tearsofjoy:

When Port Adelaide entered the AFL a large contingent of Crows supporters who were Magpies fans in the SANFL switched over, which formed the initial core of the Power's supporter base before spreading out to more fans.

I think it's understandable because those fans probably supported Crows at the time as the defacto SA team in the comp (if they cared about repping SA in the AFL).

Could they jump ship again? I think if WA and SA get another team, many fans from the existing teams would shift over but the new teams would not be as popular compared to the existing ones for at least a few years.

Wait, people get to choose which team they support?!?
Not really. Only fair-weather bandwagonners 😀.

Third generation Bulldogs supporter. Lived within walking distance of the WO so we went as a family to all the home games (except for Mum who enjoyed a blessed few hours off from us, but then had to comfort my brother who arrived home crying when we lost - often! 😢).

Mum was nominally a Bulldogs supporter but when we moved to Queensland she immediately decided to support the new Brisbane Bears. Regrettably she didn’t live to see the Lions’ three flags. 😢

My dad goes for Crows and a majority of my family does too so that why I go for Adelaide, growing up I had a soft spot for Collingwood due to Bucks/Didak.

It’s quite amusing, one half of my girlfriends family is trying to convince her young nephew to go for Port and the other half is trying to convince him to go for Crows.

Worked with a bloke who jumped on the Crows from Carton I think then Jumped to the Power. Got a lot of feedback when the Crows went back to back

If he was smart he wouldn't pick either

My dad made me a fan and told me which team to go for. Which I think applies to a lot of AFL fans.
Mine didn’t care who I went for. Even though he’s no longer here I’ll always be grateful he took me to Port vs Geelong at AAMI in 2005 when he didn’t go for either of them.

Thank f*ck Geelong won

Part of the forbidden jumped ship club with a sprinkle of terrible luck on the side. Grew up Richmond because of dad from birth up until the 2015 Elimination Final, mum takes me and she's a kanga supporter. Watch us lose in a pretty good game , leaving the G covered in tears and mum takes the opportunity to strike on a vulnerable me, thus resulting in me becoming a kangas supporter ever since.

Hows it been? Just great

I let my kid decide. I live in a Melbourne so didn’t see much point brainwashing her to follow the Crows, plus I’m not that cruel and she’s Victorian.

When she was 4 she self selected the Dogs because she liked blue, liked dogs and the Bont used to live a few doors down and we’d say hello to him at the local cafe.

I also had a theory that I’d be keen for her to love her footy and take me to games when I’m a old bastard so wanted her to find her own team and love for the game.

Several years later she loves going to the games so I now fork out for Dogs memberships.

Family story has it I was Saints until I was 6.
I was apparently told by our next door neighbour to barrack for Hawthorn in the '78 GF..They won and I was hooked...best decision I've ever made.

Grew up in Brisbane so as a younger child witnessed the Lions 3 peat.

However I couldn’t help but be more invested in Carlton who dad supported.

He also had the 79,81,82,87 and 95 GFs on DVD which got a fair run.

I didn’t stand a chance.

I am surprised child protective services did not get involved. I am sorry with what you went through.

Growing up in Adelaide in the early 90's, there were 2 options - support Port Adelaide, or someone else.

My folks got me playing footy in 1994, and they themselves were both 2nd gen Port Adelaide fans and my family bled black and white. This, on top of the fact that Port Adelaide had won flags in 1988,89,90 and 92 in the SANFL, meant I band wagoned the shit out of that and supported the Pies in the local league. Unlike many in SA at the time, my folks didn't truly dive in to the Crows as the parochial SA team, preferring to bide their time until Port got the 2nd licence. They did take me to Adelaide home games at football park for some live AFL action, and I distinctly remember them taking me to a Crows v Hawthorn game early on in 1994. Hawthorn dominated, Dunstall kicked 10(IIRC?), and upon doing some revisionist history (dominant 80's era and early 90's), band wagoned the shit out of the Hawks also :D

Late 1996 came around and it was confirmed that Port Adelaide had successfully obtained the state's 2nd AFL licence, and after spending 3 years watching the maggies play every saturday, as well as watching a hat-trick of SANFL flags live in 94,95 and 96, the Hawks got the boot and the Power became my team.

2013-15 (especially 2014 having lost to them in the prelim) gave me momentary regret haha, but I also realise that I was pretty privelaged as a youngster watching SANFL flags for fun, at a time when the SANFL was a pretty decent standard a competition.

I let my kids decide too. They can barrack for whoever they want but only Freo fans get to sleep inside the house.

What is hard to understand? There was no Freo team when I started following footy & WC had the entire state. I switched as soon as they came in as I grew up in Freo & I would have gone for them if it was an option back then.

I recon the only other turncoating allowed is if your child / brother / sister starts playing for an AFL team.
