Seeing the AFL is going nuts and talking about 17 then 18 teams, let's play hypotheticals and make a 26 team league.

Everyone gets to play each other once. It's so fair and balanced!

Remember this is a HYPOTHETICAL. No arguments of why 26 teams would be a load of shit will be entered into, (because it is a load of shit) it's pointless arguing and there's other threads for that and for what it's worth I think we need LESS clubs not more.

Adelaide
Brisbane
Cairns
Canberra
Carlton
Collingwood
Darwin
Essendon
Fremantle
Geelong
Gold Coast Sharks
Hawthorn
Hobart
Launceston
Melbourne
Newcastle
North Melbourne
NZ
Port Adelaide
Richmond
South Africa
St Kilda
Sydney
West Coast
West Sydney
Western Bulldogs

That's assuming the AFL are really keen on going to new markets. If their not and want to keep it in the country then, it's 3 teams from SA and WA:

Adelaide
Brisbane
Cairns
Canberra
Carlton
Collingwood
Darwin
East Perth
Essendon
Fremantle
Geelong
Gold Coast Sharks
Hawthorn
Hobart
Launceston
Melbourne
Newcastle
North Adelaide Districts
North Melbourne
Port Adelaide
Richmond
St Kilda
Sydney
West Coast
West Sydney
Western Bulldogs

slighty crazy, but still i can foresee a mandurah team in the future - given its the fatest growing area in the country - sure peel are shit, but that's another kettle of fish

I thought of Mandurah but thought East Perth could take in the Midland area as well. Mandurah's current level of growth might see it be Gold Coast like in size in 30 years.

I've heard that there was some interest that there could be a third team introduced in Western Australia. Apparently that the state would be able to support another team over there.
I'm sure it would be a reasonably similar story in South Australia.

I'd prefer a 19 round season between these 20 clubs:

NSW: Sydney, Western Sydney
Qld: Brisbane, GC
SA: PA, Norwood Crows, Glenelg Sharks
Vic: Clt, Rich, Col, Ess, Haw, WB, Gee, Melb, Stk, NM
WA: WC, Freo, East Perth

and an extended preseason cup comprised of these 20 (less the AFL premier) plus:
SANFL premier
WAFL premier
QFL premier
NTFL premier
TFL premier
NSW/ACT premier

Divide these into 5 groups of 5: play 4 qualifying games each and then the overall ranked 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 then a GF. Winner then plays last years AFL premier.
The groups of 5 would be determined by a televised pick out of a hat on draft day.

Whether you include the VFL in this competition or not depends on whether you consider the new VFL to be a reserves comp of the AFL.

Would be a hell of a motivation to win the NTFL premiership if you knew you were playing Essendon at the MCG, Port in Adelaide, Brisbane in Darwin and Carlton in Darwin in February :)

Good stuff.:thumbsu:

I'd try to tack a Mallee/Riverland side in there ranging from Renmark to Ouyen to Swan Hill and Broken Hill, and encompassing all of the Mildura area.

The area transcends 3 state borders has a decent enough population to support a team.

Hey, as it was I couldn't fit in Sandy Bay Seagulls - or any other Tassie side; not even one that still exists.

Adelaide merging with Norwood and Port surviving on their own ??? :D

Which club is the one struggling off the field ???

Adelaide
Albury-Wodonga
Brisbane
Canberra
Cairns
Carlton
Collingwood
Darwin
Essendon
Footscray
Fremantle
Geelong
Gold Coast
Hawthorn
Melbourne
North Adelaide
North Melbourne
Perth
Port Adelaide
Richmond
St Kilda
Sydney
Tasmania
West Coast
West Sydney
Western Bulldogs

I'm glad this is hypothetical - I don't want to see a team in West Sydney as the city can't and won't support another team - Sydney needs to be considered an 11-team town, not a one-team town.

Neither.

Got any more intelligent questions?

Make no mistake, there will be 3 AFL teams from SA in the future.
Adelaide will be forced to align with either Glenelg or Norwood.

With the SANFL being a 9 team comp the obvious splits are:

Glenelg, South, WWT
Port, Centrals, West
Norwood, Sturt, North

The Norwood side will probably play at Adelaide Oval or a new inner city stadium whereas the Gleneelg and Port based sides are likely to continue at AAMI.

Player management will become simpler as instead of one SANFL mimidraft there will be three, based on who your AFL club has chosen. Players will be managed within 3 clubs not spread over 9. SANFL teams, who are now facing a generation of kids who dont know life before the Crows and Power will be guided into allegiances based on those 3 clubs linked to their AFL club.

Its pretty obvious really, you just cant see it yet.

Much more likely...

SA
Adelaide (Glenelg)
North Adelaide (Norwood)
Port Adelaide

NSW
Sydney

Tasmania

Qld
Brisbane
Gold Coast

Vic
Carlton
Collingwood
Essendon
Geelong
Hawthorn
Melbourne
North Melbourne
Richmond
St Kilda
Western Bulldogs

WA
Fremantle
Perth
West Coast

Wont happen
Albury-Wodonga
Canberra
Cairns
Darwin
West Sydney
Footscray
