Our preliminary 30 man squad for the World T20 has been named today. I'm pretty sure it gets whittled down to 15?

Australia squad George Bailey, Travis Birt, Dan Christian, Pat Cummins, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus, Brad Hogg, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Ben Laughlin, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Andrew McDonald, Clint McKay, Dirk Nannes, Stephen O'Keefe, Tim Paine, Rob Quiney, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Adam Voges, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Shane Watson, Cameron White.

Somebody like to justify the selection of Ben Laughlin ahead of, say, Nathan Coulter-Nile?

Nathan Lyon and James Pattinson a few of the big names not there.

+1

Maybe the selectors want to lighten Pattinson's workload?

Surely Siddle, Cutting, McDermott, Bird and Coulter-Nile deserve a place ahead of Laughlin.

McDermott should be in there for sure as well. :thumbsu:

I don't mind patto_man missing out for that reason.

I'd like to see Aaron Finch given a chance as well but I'm not holding my breath.

The Marsh boys won't be going nor will Voges or MacDonald. Or Laughlin, they are there to make up the numbers. James Pattinson didn't look fit in England and didn't do himself any favours.

Is it just me or is it hard to work up enthusiasm for the World T20s this time? It comes around too soon.

I didn't watch a whole lot of the Big Bash last summer, but saw Laughlin bowl quite well one game and he was bowling quite well in the One Day comp from looking at the stats. Still, being included before Coulter-Nile, McDermott or even Putland is just weird. Agree with Pattinson not being there - keep him as far away from T20 as we can - injury prone, ideally suited to tests and his bowling style isn't particularly successful in T20's.

Still don't particularly like the fact that Bailey is in by default by being the captain, but oh well.

My Squad of 15:
Bailey (by default really, good captain, but not really that good a T20 player)
Watson (obviously)
Warner (obviously
Wade (prefer him going than Paine at this stage)
Birt (so explosive, pity he's such a disappointment in the other forms)
S.Marsh (when he's in form he is a better opener than Finch and imo up there with Gayle and Warner, when he's not... trainwreck)
D.Hussey (would have liked to have taken Maxwell, but for a WC he's the man)
M.Hussey (gun, versatile bat and awesome fielder)
McKay (such an ugly bowler, but it's effective)
Starc (on his day he is awesome and that day happens more regularly than Johnson)
Hogg (almost unplayable in T20)
Johnson (picked more as an allrounder, his hitting can be invaluable)
Hilfenhaus (unsure of his suitability to the format, but has been bowling very well in the IPL)
Doherty (good spin option)
M.Marsh (I just like his game more than Christian's, not unhappy with Christian though)

Pattinson seems to struggle the shorter the format.

Laughlin is a bizarre choice. At this stage I'd hope to see:

1) David Warner
2) Aaron Finch
3) Shane Watson (C)
4) David Hussey
5) Cameron White
6) Michael Hussey
7) Matthew Wade
8) Ryan Harris
9) Clint McKay
10) Brad Hogg
11) Ben Hilfenhaus

12) Tim Paine (working on the logic that there's always 2 keepers)
13) Mitch Marsh/Steve Smith (there can only be one)
14) Travis Birt
15) Dirk Nannes

No Bailey for mine.

Laughlin has a rep as a death bowler in one day cricket.

Since it seems no one else in the whole country can do it, it's not surprising he is in the selectors thoughts for a 30 man squad even if he has practically zero chance of actually making the final cut.

The official squad is out...

http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc-world-twenty20-2012/content/current/story/577568.html

Australia squad David Warner, Shane Watson, Matthew Wade (wk), David Hussey, Michael Hussey, George Bailey (capt), Cameron White, Daniel Christian, Glenn Maxwell, Brad Hogg, Xavier Doherty, Clint McKay, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Ben Hilfenhaus.

I'm a little annoyed that Christian got picked ahead of Mitch Marsh. Still unhappy that Bailey gets an automatic gig as well; the likes of Birt and Quiney who had ripper Big Bash tournaments must feel a little aggreived at missing out for he and White (though White had a decent IPL).

Good looking squad and nice to see the selectors didn't go back to Johnson. Bailey is still a worry for me, make Watson captain if White isn't up to it.

Being a naughty boy at the Academy during the off season doesn't provide many incentives to pick you

He also hasn't done enough recently because of injury so other players like Maxwell and White have gone to IPL and England to get noticed.

Pretty stupid of him to get on the razzle at the Academy though considering such a big tournament was coming up.

I think the squad is ok. Hopefully good enough to get to the finals, but the bowling is a real worry. Can't do anything about Bailey, he isn't going to be as selfless as Clarke when it comes to the batting line-up, I'm sure so he'll have to get a move on.

Just looking at our squad I think we are going to have a heavy reliance on our openers Warner & Watson, if they both fire I think we can go the whole way if they don't I just can't see the rest of our batting order posting/chasing huge scores.

Mike Hussey is awesome to watch if he starts hitting 6's he can really go big & I feel is a little underrated in this format.

With the bowling our keys are Starc, Cummins & Hogg imo, very potent opening bowling attack that could leak runs but should be able to get wickets. Hogg will be very important as our number 1 spinner, have to play him ahead of Doherty.

I'm just worried about our middle order of Dussey, White, Bailey, Maxwell, Wade & Christian. Hopefully they all do well & we might just surprise a few teams. GO AUSSIES

Agree with this whole post. :thumbsu:
