If AFL was any good....

The one thing i find amazing is the hundreds of different ways soccer fans come up with the same argument.

Aussie rules fans Know that soccer is more popular,
they know that afl will most likely never grow out of the four states it's popular in now, yet, and here's the thing - WE DONT CARE.

We enjoy our game, were grateful that we can go every winters week to see the game we love and whether or not it becomes popular on the world stage is inconsequential to everyone but the bigwigs in the afl commision.

Therefore all you young soccer fans who feel the CONSTANT need to go on about how much more popular the game is than aussie rules can go and share your wasted emotions somewhere else, and leave us in peace to enjoy the footy.

The argument that it is the most popular game in the world is used to counter the argument that it is boring i.e. if soccer was boring then so many people wouldn't like it.

On the negative side, there are some characteristics of the game itself that may make it difficult for the current boom to last. One of its problems is that soccer tends to draw low crowds, and drawing low crowds may make it difficult to win the public relations battle. For example, in the last ten years, the average attendance at Brazilian games has been 12,000, with 11,000 in Argentina, and 4,800 in Chile. In Europe, the average attendance is around 20,000. If soccer can't draw decent crowds in countries where it is king and has lengthy traditions, it may find Australia even more difficult to build crowd sizes that can then be used to hype it over the other football codes.
Soccer also exaggerates its global popularity. Soccer World Cups tend to be largely European and South American affairs. The World's two largest nations, China and India, have rarely been represented. Admittedly, there is more diversity in the finalists than there is in rival World Cups of basketball, cricket and rugby union, however soccer's low scoring means qualifications and performances are more of a lottery, and this naturally means it will always have more competitive games, and a wider variety of countries involved.

One of its problems is that soccer tends to draw low crowds, and drawing low crowds may make it difficult to win the public relations battle. Crowds up 15% in season 3 of A-league. A-leage has acheived record crowds this year in Adelaide, Brisbane, Gosford, Wellington and Newcastle this year alone. Average crowds now above NRL. What evidence have you got that soccer crowds are falling?

For example, in the last ten years, the average attendance at Brazilian games has been 12,000, with 11,000 in Argentina, and 4,800 in Chile. In Europe, the average attendance is around 20,000. Compared to what other football code? What code gets anywhere near these crowds? Rugby?
Soccer also exaggerates its global popularity. Soccer World Cups tend to be largely European and South American affairs. All parts of the glob are equally represented - no other sport does this. World cup has Asian countries and African countries that can make the quarter finals. Have you studied geography? The World's two largest nations, China and India, have rarely been represented. China's been in nearly every soccer world cup. India has no football representation - so what are you comparing it to - cricket? And where does this leave AFL? Admittedly, there is more diversity in the finalists than there is in rival World Cups of basketball, cricket and rugby union, however soccer's low scoring means qualifications and performances are more of a lottery, and this naturally means it will always have more competitive games, and a wider variety of countries involved. Get off the drugs!

OK we're all pooing ourselves over the impending takeover of our great game by the inevitable and immovable marching force that is soccer. Happy now? Good. Your work here is done. You may now leave.

We only defend the world game when it is attacked by ignorant one-eyed bogans like yourself ****.
We have been coping shit for far too long by all media. Now it's time to get some respect back. If big footy posters didnt always waste their time bagging soccer then we wouldn't need to comment. As soon it's given back you cry.
I bet if you saw Muscat, Gascoigne, Roy Keane, Dennis Wise or Vinnie Jones done the street you wouldn't be telling them they are pillow biters, you would be cleaned and you would be the pillow biter.
"We" meaning soccer fans?
Umm...and who was the guy who started this thread?
Oh yeah, hes just defending soccer from all the crap us bogan aussies gave him isnt he?
cos we gave him so much before he wrote the OP

Who really cares if our game dosen't cut it overseas, like we really want them taking our stars anyway? Most aussies would be secretly proud we have it all to ourselves.

Now go play with your little w0g ball in traffic:D

haha. Only 28 years ago the league was confined to a 2 state competition. No one dreamed of playing games in Dubai, scouting in Ireland & spending money on South Africa. The next 25 years will see the total expansion into Australia, the growth of the game internationally.

Soccer ofcourse will always be big, but everyone will always want to watch some real physical sport. AFL & Soccer can live in harmony, just it will mean the death of the NRL.

Woot.

Congratulations. It took you 150 years to do (poorly) what we did in nine. You really think your sport is going to overtake football in world popularity? You really think that these people

are going to just drop their game, their passion, their LIVES, and just sit on their hands to watch and play your pissant little sport? Not bloody likely.

Hey Fred, we don't give a **** what your cousins wherever do in their spare time.

And what did you do in 9 years?

Hey Fred, we don't give a **** what your cousins wherever do in their spare time.

Then knock off this "AFL's going to take over the world" bullshit when you clear don't know crap.

And what did you do in 9 years?

Expanded internationally. Sport codified 1863, first international game 1872 (England-Scotland).

.

You really are a sub-normal idiot aren't you.

Who is spouting this AFL world domination exactly??
Please read the OP!!

Just because we are trying to expand interest in the sport, does not mean that we are aiming for this Hitler like mind set that you are condemning us for.

Just run along, enjoy your sport and step in front of an oncoming roadtrain.:thumbsu:

Amazing, get knocked for being small-minded and insular, thus ******ing AR's progress internationally, then get knocked for my secret plans for world domination.

Please find me a quote where I mention that "AFL's going to take over the world".

You are living proof that soccer caters for the lowest common denominator.

For example, in the last ten years, the average attendance at Brazilian games has been 12,000, with 11,000 in Argentina, and 4,800 in Chile. I would say that the PR battle has been won by soccer in those countries. In Europe, the average attendance is around 20,000. If soccer can't draw decent crowds in countries where it is king and has lengthy traditions, it may find Australia even more difficult to build crowd sizes that can then be used to hype it over the other football codes. I bet those figures are including low division sides (eg 5th division) If you applied the same logic for the afl and included lower league totals in your averages then the average attendances would be very very low.
Soccer also exaggerates its global popularity. Soccer World Cups tend to be largely European and South American affairs. The World's two largest nations, China umm they are world cup regulars. and India do they play any football there, have rarely been represented. Admittedly, there is more diversity in the finalists than there is in rival World Cups of basketball, cricket and rugby union, however soccer's low scoring means qualifications and performances are more of a lottery, and this naturally means it will always have more competitive games, and a wider variety of countries involved. You're right. In cricket and rugby for example there are only ever about a max of half a dozen teams who can in it, but in soccer maybe 20 teams have a real shot.

Just as a side not has anone read John O'Neills (ARU CEO) autobiography. Have a look at it and you'll realise just how big he, demetrio and gallop think that soccer will become in this country.

I'm going to take a stab at it, and say that they either think it'll be massive, or stay tiny.

I don't mind soccer but it doesn't come close to AFL, IN MY OPINION. Like Bushie says, what are you trying to achieve here. Why bother bashing AFL on an AFL forum.

Soccer, for all it qualities, must have been invented for the weakest of minds, the pathetic and the ******ed.

Because though all these pages of drivel that I unwisely subscribed to, the most overwhelming distraction is soccer nuts with a mormon-like fervour trying to convert us to their game.

FFS, it won't be the number one sport in Australia for at least 50 years, it is ****ing boring to watch and discussion about it has a more appropiate place than here. It's called the soccer board.

So **** off and go and hug each other & pat yourselves on the arse over there.

Soccer is the only sport as far as i know that allows players to strike the ball
with their head to pass or score.Apparently many people who play soccer suffer from brain damage because of this.If the AFL takes off in other parts of the world it should be encouraged to save all the kiddies from brain damage.

A-league crowds up 15%.

Kids lining up to join soccer clubs.

Two new teams next year - Gold Coast and Cairns.

I'm ecstatic about soccer's growth. Crap on all you like about soccer's diseases - it isn't impeding the A-league's growth.
