Footy won't work in NZ, GWS needs to focus on Sydney and the AFL needs to invest in the market Canberra has to offer they have given the afl top tier talent and have a state team, unlike Gold Coast and GWS this will be a good investment and Tassie and Canberra should of had teams a long time ago its over due and it should happen

Kiwis are as anti Australian as Sydney siders are anti Victorian. It wouldn't work there.
For the most part it's just banter/rivalry to it, but I can't ever see them getting around a game called "Australian" Football because of it.

I went to New Zealand on holiday recently and I was talking to some bloke about it, he said they play it in PE classes - he said it wasn't even a bad game and it's fun but they were also all like "booooo Aussies"

It's interesting because Australian football was almost adopted by the kiwis back at the time of its inception, the same as in Queensland.

Unfortunately though, some very minor things changed the course of history to them playing rugby. The opposite happened in W.A which was going to be a rugby state.

Canberra isn't any more "represented" by GWS than Tasmania is by North Melbourne.

If Canberra misses out on Team 20 due to the GWS relationship, the AFL is doing both Canberra and Western Sydney a disservice.

Not opposed to an NZ team down the line, but there needs to be a bit more groundwork laid first (consistent games and an AFL-ready stadium in Auckland, for starters).
NZ can just sustain one NRL club and RL would be 100 times more popular than AR there. No chance.

Won’t be Rams (unfortunately) as it needs to be gender neutral for the AFLW team. Or the Canberra Ewes.
that's the name of their rep team the women's team use it, I did have a stallions idea, the rams is already the identity, its not a big deal and rams is more menacing than sheep and fits perfectly i don't think women would care even the who knows if they will get an aflw team (they probably will)

i think you can mess with the name a bit for the women's team for equality, the act have always called them selves the rams when it comes to footy

You aren't Victoria oldest rival
Wrong!
"Victoria the birthplace of Australian rules and, with contributing factors such as population and finances, dominated the first hundred years of intercolonial and interstate football. This was the case in the first-ever intercolonial representative match, held on Tuesday, 1 July 1879 (a public holiday), at East Melbourne Cricket Ground between the VFA and the SAFA.
The final score was Victoria (represented by the Victorian Football Association) 7.14 to South Australia 0.3. The match was attended by more than 10,000 people."

The SAFA now the SANFL was founded on April 30th 1877 and the VFA on 17th may 1877 so the SANFL is the oldest Australian Football comp in Australia/World.

Some great history right there!

SA don't need a 3rd team the AFL need to focus on giving each state a team and giving a state a 3rd one taking an opportunity away from Canberra or the nt isn't a good idea
Can’t have Canberra and GWS imo. Both need that area for their academies or the retention of players becomes a very big issue like it already is.

Surely one of the main reasons we have GWS is to drive participation in Western Sydney. At some stage GWS need to be able to rely on that area. Swans need to hand some more of Sydney’s west over to the Giants. Certainly Bankstown, Strathfield and Canada Bay (where Giants are based).

You certainly can with the kids coming through in western Sydney who are playing footy. Keep them in the system and I think 10-15 years from now they won’t need players from Canberra.

The Swans aren't going to give up further parts of Sydney just out of the goodness of our hearts to see GWS benefit from our work. The parts of Inner Western Sydney we kept were part of the exchange for us giving up the Riverina which was part of our country zone going back to our days as South Melbourne. The Giants have benefited academy wise mainly from the Riverina which has always produced AFL players. They haven't put any effort in and they struggle to retain their academy players as it is.

The Giants need to put work into their current academy zone to make it their own rather than look for more area.

I'm for North Qld based in Townsville.
Apparently Cairns would be better for a NQ team because they have a stronger footy culture there, and Mackay's footy scene is growing, too. So a NQ team playing maybe 7 in Cairns and 2 each in Townsville and Mackay might be a good model for a future team there.
