Courtesy of Wikipedia, but it doesnt matter where this info comes from, you need to be taught a few things, cos it just shows how naive you are:

Association football is one of India's most popular sports, and is said to rank second only behind cricket in popularity, although some reporting considers domestic football to be more popular [1] than domestic cricket. Football is played in almost all schools in India. Football is also said to be the top sport in the states of Goa, Kerala, Manipur, West Bengal, Mizoram and Sikkim.

You're right, nothing touches cricket in India, but as far as football codes go, soccer has that down pat. Go on any Indian online newspaper publication, its all cricket and soccer.

Well as reliable as Wikipedia is ;) I think its completely wrong about soccer in India. As far as media and local interest if falls a long way behind Hockey, Badmitton, & tennis. Its there, but theres no passion for it. You dont see EPL shirts much in India.

Like I said, cricket is far and away bigger. But theres no passion in a derby that draws 120,000? There was no passion for the game when Bayern Munich went to India a few months ago and drew that same figure (120,000)? Id love to see your figures for badminton and tennis games which draw that much interest....

You're right, people hate the game.

The point was Dan26 said soccer is nonexistant in India. And he couldnt be more wrong. So, so wrong lol. And here is the newspaper publications I was talking about. Exhibit A is Indias biggest sellling English newspaper. And exhibit B is Indian version of Yahoo sports. Those are the two I could think off of the top of my head. You're assessment that badminton is more popular has fallen flat on its face. Good try though.

Not wearing $130 Manchester United shirts? Geez, you would think that 5/6 of the nation would need that money for food and things we take for granted.

As far as football codes are concerned, soccer has it covered down pat in India. Good luck to the AFL lol
