Not ideal but also not the worst thing if it's only minor.

Aim from here is to have JJ primed and ready for finals.

A running defender is not currently a weakness in our side. In addition to the plethora of very good small to mid defenders we had last year, we have added Bramble and Freija who are performing adequately.

JJ's finals appearance should we play in September will be important so let's just focus on getting him right in early August for him to finish off the season fit and firing.

The other good to come of it is JJ likely won't go on next season. At least we are blooding some young talent who would otherwise be playing VFL.

Freijah's come on but we can't assume that as a first year player we'd want to pick him for finals or that he will continue his form level throughout a long season nor should we assume that Duryea is a strength in the team (form irrespective) - we demoted Duryea to the rookie list for a reason.

This is also from a defence that had Richards taken out of it, and had Coffield named in the R1 and R2 team but who knows if he'll be selected (or fit) again this year.

It might not be weak, but it certainly is brittle, and JJ still would have had a part to play at this stage of the year and hopefully he's still around.

James O'Donnell - Test
Ryan Gardner - 1 week
James Harmes - 1 week
Kelsey Rypstra - 1 week
Anthony Scott - 3-4 weeks
Jason Johannisen - 4-5 weeks
Jordan Croft - 5-7 weeks
Bailey Smith - Season

You need some injury luck to be able to go deep in finals. Hopefully the 4 boys with short-term unavailability are all back within the next week and we'll have a relatively short injury list. Just Scott, JJ, Croft & Smith unlucky to feature again (for the senior squad).

Gardner from 5-7 weeks down to one week!
Edit, Rypstra also down from 3-4 to 1.

Completely forgot about Rypstra.
Tough for the kid when he has only got a six month contract to prove himself and he's injured for maybe half the games available to him.

If he's any good hopefully he has shown enough for the club to give him another year.
If he's not ... :(

Its hard to imagine he's shown enough either way. Depending on how we rate the depth of this draft I wouldn't be opposed to delisting him but offering him a VFL spot with Footscray if he's happy to stay in VIC. You would think that's still his best chance at an AFL opportunity vs. going back to the SANFL.

James Harmes, Kelsey Rypstra and Ryan Gardner are all a chance to return to football this weekend after lengthy layoffs.

Rypstra and Harmes suffered hamstring injuries a month ago and need to get through main training before determining their availability.

Both James and Kelsey are in the finals stages of their rehabilitation following their hamstring injuries,” Head of Sports Medicine, Chris Bell said.
“Both players have completed a match parameters training session on the weekend, and if they come through main training this week like I expect, both will return to availability.”

Gardner has missed almost three months with a wrist injury, adding valuable experience to the backline group.

“Ryan has been incredibly diligent in the recovery following the surgery that repaired a damaged ligament in his wrist,” Bell said.

“He still has some final boxes to tick for us across this week, but we are optimistic that he will be pulling on the jumper this weekend after missing the last 11 weeks.”

Injury List - Round 22

Ryan Gardner (wrist) – test
James Harmes (hamstring) – test
Kelsey Rypstra (hamstring) – test
Jordan Croft (thigh) – 3-4 weeks
Jason Johannisen (calf) – 3-5 weeks
Anthony Scott (concussion) - 2-3 weeks
Bailey Smith (ACL) – season

I'd love James Harmes to come in but he's behind Macrae and Sanders. Touch wood but this is looking good.

Will need to return to match fitness via the VFL but I'd hope after a week or two he replaced VDM or Mcneil.
