It is astonishing how far the once mighty West Coast Eagles have fallen. It would have been unthinkable four years ago that a young star like Jackson would choose the Dockers over the Eagles. 27-year-old Jayden Hunt is hardly going to provide any hope for the two-win Eagles.

Thanks Kane.

Like the time Tarrant came to the Eagles. Or Croad. Or Hogan. Or Lobb. Or ...

**** he's hopeless.

For all the melts on here, our club has consistently shown it knows how to build good lists and win flags. We have made mistakes over the years, and the criticism of the club in recent years has been warranted. But I'm still comfortable we'll be back contending relatively quickly, and not languish out of finals for a decade like so many other clubs.

We sold the farm once before trying to bring in a star player to win flags. Glad we stayed out of the Jackson bidding war.

Geelong is definitely not Melbourne but it seems to be a real destination club - partly for the lifestyle mix of country, beach and some city.
Don't forget the meth.

I heard that’s how their players earn a little on the side so they can keep them all under the salary cap - dealing to the locals

* Yes I made that up, but Stokes was in fact charged with dealing at one point in time

I don't think Kane likes us much and doesn't really grasp what " going to the draft" means....View attachment 1535245

He's right in a way. Whilst Fremantle were courting an obvious talent, we were very "meh". We claimed to be in the hunt, but to me our actions didn't match our words

Which is perplexing, as Nic Nat is almost at the end and Jackson could have filled a massive need

I can appreciate, apparently, that we do most of our negotiating behind closed doors and not in the public forum, but on a basic level it is a little concerning that more and more players are looking to chose Fremantle over us

I mean, even if we aren't interested in trading for them, do we not want to have the right of first refusal?

It's a little hard to go after players when seven of our players take up half our salary cap...Redden retiring early gave us a little relief, but come on...we could have Lockett in our forward line and he'd be lucky to even get his hands on the ball with how hopeless and behind the times our midfielders operate.

Ignoring the fact that this has been debunked numerous times, it isn't relevant to this trade period as the contracts 2 of the seven claimed to be a part of it have expired.

Maybe we don't rate Jackson that highly. I certainly don't get the hype but I'm no expert.

We could also have other plans.

Fremantle paid multiple first round picks and a second round pick for Jackson. We might have gotten away with not throwing in the second rounder as our picks would be higher than Freo.

Either way paying up that much draft capital when we are at the start of a rebuild would do more harm than good.

You'd hope so. It seems like other clubs were in the ear of players they were targeting for most of the season. The impression I got was WCE were always second into the discussion at best.

Apparently one of the reasons Luke chose Freo is that they're promising to play him in number of positions such as forward, midfield & ruck, while it's likely he'd be stuck in the ruck for most of the time after NN goes at our club.

Agreed, at the moment Jackson is a solid ruckman mainly because of his athleticism. He is only 199cm tall, both of the King brothers for example are taller than that. If any of that athleticism fades at any point he becomes very mediocre if not unplayable.

The only other ruckman that I could find below 2m that played last were Paddy Ryder (still could jump but was losing effectiveness from when he was at his best) and Callum Sinclair.

Recruiting a ruckman for two first round picks plus a second round, then paying him $700k a year, is absolute folly. It would be a different story if he showed he could become a top 10 KPF, but that is not the case. I am very glad we wisely avoided him.

Developing a nucleus of our new side through the draft is just astute list development. Trading away that draft capital to grab Jackson for the next decade is poor list development. Jackson isn't going to win us games with the condition of our list. He's the type of target we should consider in 3-4 years.

I'd prefer to target Naughton, Logan McDonald, or the equivalent calibre midfielder if we've developed our own talls in that time.

Its very reactionary and band-aid solution to go for a big fish like Jackson at the bottom of a rebuild cycle - free agents excluded.

We did all we could to make sure Freo paid up. Job done.

These 2 plus Tim English are all OOC 2024.
I'd like to think we are putting in all the work to tempt these 3 guys home.

The 2 Dogs would be great targets, especially since JUH & Bailey are both out 2024 as well.
Who do they prioritise??

From our side of things Gaff, Yeo & NN will be out that same year (with Gov out 2023) so plenty of cap room to work with.

Cornes is a flat out idiot. He clearly doesn’t follow what our club is doing and relies on the half baked notions put forward by fellow ‘experts’.

Imagine if we emptied our draft hand for 2 years to grab Jackson and who….JOM?….ummm….Josh Corbett?….I dunno? was it meant to be Tom Mitchell or a GWS midfielder that Richmond poached instead?

We’d be called deluded and ‘topping up’ for a flag….

This is the same moron who named 3 clubs to go after Josh Kennedy, even though he had come out several times and said he was cooked.

West Coast sold the farm for Kelly and mucked up their future

Also, West Coast should have chased Jackson

Never mind that the draft cost for Jackson was roughly one mid 2nd round pick cheaper than what we’d paid for Kelly

Cornes has repeatedly said our list is too old, which is true to an extent but you can’t fix that by trading out multiple early draft picks. You have to be patient and build through the draft - it’s part of why we split pick 2, to get two cracks at the highish end of the draft rather than one at the really point end
