Probably the smartest thing I've ever seen him write.

Hopper has fast become one of the most overrated players in the comp.

7 years in. 22 touches, 0.37 goals, 4 tackles and 4 clearances a game. Basically an identical stat line to Jack Redden.

Good player, but Tiges have overpaid.

Sumich reporting on Sportfm we offered Don Pyke a Director of a coaching gig and he turned it down to remain with Sydney.

What does director of coaching entail?

Is it a position you create when your coaches aren't doing their jobs properly?
I assume it is another name for General Manager of football which is currently filled by Gavin Bell. I don't really know who he is, but considering we are one of the biggest clubs, we should have a much more qualified Director.

I would think being an ex-senior coach is almost a pre-requisite. Daniher was great in the role, though Vozzo seemed to do a pretty good job as well.

Wasn't he the one who said last week, Hunt will make no difference?
Or was that some different prictorian?
I actually think it was someone else. I think Damo was actually quite complimentary on this one, even praiseworthy.
Something along the lines of 'Hunt will be one of the best pickups for the price in this trade period.'

Its basically the coaching equivalent of the mafias "consiglierie":

Gives advice, guides the coach. Occasionally kicks a few heads and can do so being the elder statesman and get away with it. Prevents the senior coach from getting their hands dirty

Exactly what we need. And Pyke would be a great man for that position too

I always assumed it was a man-management role - ie day to day management of the 5-10 coaches on the books.

Allowing the senior coach to focus more on game day/tactical side of things.

…but who knows, could be in charge of parking Adam Simpson’s car and organising the dog race.

I don't get why they bang on about Jackson choosing Freo over us. Freo are coming into their window, we're on the opposite side of the clock having won one and we've got 4-5 years before we'd be contending again.

Broken record but anyway

I have no love for Cornes, but he is correct

One thing i have long been kind of critical of, is that we very rarely, if ever, court players publicly to come to the club

Its been suggested that we do a lot of work behind closed doors, and that may be true. But if it is true it isn't exactly working because i would hardly say that we have ever really been what i would call a destination club

And i think a lot of that comes back to the fact that we are so financially stable; we have such good membership and attendance that we don't really need to recruit superstars to generate interest. So that unless someone nominates to come to us, we really don't bother. We never seem to "chase" star players coming out of contract (with the recent exception of Kelly). And at the end of the day, everyone loves a fan. If you are a player looking for a trade do you want to go the club of someone who really really wants you to come there, or a club who is like, meh, if they come, they come?

I would love to see us become much more proactive in the chasing of players. So in the years to come we see something like "Johnny superstar coming out of contract, West Coast chasing hard for his signature", or "2 out of contract young superstars nominate West Coast"

And if we don't have the capacity to bring these players to the club, that's also fine. At least it gives us the right of first refusal

This approach works for Sydney, it works for Geelong, it works for Collingwood and it works for Richmond

We need to make it work for us
