The backline is going to be interesting this season, McKay, Logue, Corr and McDonald are certainties, but Ziebell, Young, Dawson, Bonar and Drury did a lot of good things.
I reckon Corr & Logue will be up against it now to make our round 1 game vs west Coke .
Does anyone know what happened to Logue ? I saw him go on with around 1min to go in the 2nd qtr.
Then he did some 70-80% tempo running along the boundary in his sneakers on the outer wing (50m line to 50m) for the remainder of the morning. I thought he was announced to be playing half a game today?!

He did play half a game

The first 2 quarters

Lol you obviously weren't watching very closely then
Please explain…
What stood out in our new 2023 game plan….
Is it pass it along the back 6 defenders… stop prop , go backwards & kick it to a contest ? …. Turnover .
Cos I’ve seen that car wreck game plan for the past 3-4 years … & kept seeing it today…. Only difference was that we there was no opposition to send it back to us with interest !

Some harsh views on Xerri. Thought he spread and contested better than last year. Don’t see it with CCJ though.

Agreed. He's still a fair way from the finished product and has to iron out some of his errors (especially when he is helping out in our defensive 50)... But I think Xerri will play round-1 ahead of CCJ.

People are forgetting about the new Subsititute rule, where I think a lot of teams will use it to play 2 proper ruckmen and then sub 1 out between the 10-25 minute mark of the 3rd quarter. That also allows Comben to not have to ruck until the last quarter, which is perfect to protect him from injury.

Ok 👍. Must of missed him
He took about 4 important marks in the first qtr for the 2nds defence. Looked the best player on the park in the first qtr and will make such a difference to this team...swapped sides in the 2nd qtr and didnt have much to do..

Forward structure when we were moving the ball from deep defence and the ball movement itself were both noticeably different, and they've been our two biggest problems the last 24 months.

Our KPP’s were a lot more noticeable and impactful than this time last year. Means the structures are at least there now.

Very good day down at Arden St today. Big crowd, sunshine and the club went to a lot of trouble re seating areas, a bar, food etc. Players spent a heap of time signing autographs.

In terms of the game (and I haven't seen any stats/write ups as yet) the key players were

  • Greenwood - clearly the best mid (and playing for the weaker yellow team) in the first half where the heat was on
  • PC - a strong all round game - doing the Dusty will soon be known as 'doing the PC'
  • Logue - very good defender, looks set to be a great addition
  • Zurhaar - continuing his good pre season - looks damaging as a forward (less so as a mid)
  • Cunners - worked his way into the game but equally as impressive forward as midfield. I can see his midfield minutes being cut back to 50% given the number of midfield options we have now and the need to better players in the forward half
  • LDU - tracked along at half rat power for the first half with just glimpses of his prowess - worked harder in the second half and his dominance was clear
  • Goldie - still clearly the best bigman we have

A few players that had very little impact on the game - the current Captains and the previous Captain.

What does all this mean for 2023? We will improve on last year - better coaching; better defence; more depth in the midfield but forward line remains a work in progress. We will finish bottom 4 again but we should be looking at a 6 win season and a far higher % than last year.

And I would encourage the club to keep with this approach of the intra club match on family day and on a Saturday afternoon - it worked very well today and it was great to see so much Blue and White at Arden St again.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but if I had to select a round one forward line from that match sim, it would be:

Sheezel - Larks - Zurhaar
Curtis - Chom - Turner (!!)

With TT taking a huge shit on his own career it has left us rejigging our fwd line.

Zurhaar Larkey Simpkin
Curtis Comben Turner

Could well be our rd 1 fwd line.
