Thoughts of the day:

1 - A buzz in the air and positivity amongst supporters I haven’t seen in ages.

2 - Kanye has had lip fillers.

3 - Tom Powell no longer a kid. Looks fitter than ever and probably the most significant improvement of the back of last year. BOG for me today.

4 - CCJ does a bit wrong but really hits packs hard and works up and down the wings providing a target. Is a huge specimen.

5 - Comben looks ready to finally cement a spot in 2023.

6 - Paul Curtis could be anything. Makes something out of nothing every time and cannot be tackled. Would not surprise if he kicked 40+ this year.

PC is a monster. As long as he isn’t hurt by pace. He’ll be a star. And I hope he lines up that Jason campaigner and puts him into a space x vehicle.

Just from the small highlights we seem more fluent with the use of the ball and look more mature. Having Cunnington back and another pre season under our belts the fruits of our labour will start to show imo . Clarkson also will be massive .

I reckon Corr & Logue will be up against it now to make our round 1 game vs west Coke .
Does anyone know what happened to Logue ? I saw him go on with around 1min to go in the 2nd qtr.
Then he did some 70-80% tempo running along the boundary in his sneakers on the outer wing (50m line to 50m) for the remainder of the morning. I thought he was announced to be playing half a game today?!
He was only ever going to play a half. That was the plan going in.

Not from the club, but I managed to video capture the game. Just missing the first goal from Xerri. Will probably put it up on YouTube.
The stuff of legend right here

At around the 5.20 mark, Jy grabs the ball in a pack of players, stops, changes direction and accelerates away before handpassing to Scott. His ability to do it consistently never ceases to amaze me, I haven't seen anyone do it as well as him since the days of Steve "Zip Zip" Ella in the NRL back in the 80's.

Thanks for the write up.

lazz- yeah not surprised, Spicer not surprised.

CCJ & Xerri- not surprised

Comben- not surprised at all. I think or hope we play Goldy and let Comben be the other ruck. CCJ & Xerri are both a million miles off being decent footballers. Doesn't mean they won't make it, although I doubt very much both will, one would be a pleasant surprise.

Jy- will need to learn to play fwd, he of course will be part of the mid rotations, I've said it for a while, we want to roll good players through the guts.
Unrelenting pressure, wear our opponents down.

Stevo- I'm sort of unsure what I think, he'll need to be on point to get games though.
Comben is injury prone and lean. Someone like NicNat or Gawn will brutalise him. No thanks. Let him run. He is quick for a big bloke.

A few notes from the ground.

- How good was the ball movement today! I thought Clarko had the boys much more spaced out and positioned in a way where there was almost always some good matchups ahead of the ball. A lot of really good ball movement chains as well. Even the yellow side that was up against it from a talent POV moved the ball pretty well in Clarko's system. It's simple footy, but it's so refreshing after the overcoached nonsense from last year. The emphasis of handballing to a teammate running past after the mark tells you what kind of footy Clarko wants us to play. It's a setup that moves the ball quick and moves it long, which was our style today.

- I think Zurhaar served his purpose in the middle. Pardon the pun, but seeing him in the centre was like seeing a bull let loose in a china shop and I thought a few times he impacted the middle positively. Having a dangerous player like Zurhaar rotate forward from the middle also gives the opposition something extra to think about as well. It's a good string to have in our bow.

- Ford and Bergman were two of the younger fringier types that impressed today. Drury is getting the talk as the shiny new toy, but I thought Bergs was right there with him. Ford is getting very close to getting games in my opinion. Stephenson let himself down today, so I'd have Ford firmly ahead of him for a spot up forward. I wrote similar in a different post, but a lot of our forwards are either changing position or having weak and/or interrupted preseasons. Ford has a great chance to take a spot and make it his own. Turner has that same opportunity after his impressive performance today.

- I think we might need to clone Sheezel. The back half work isn't as natural, but with his skills you'd love him running around, getting the cheap ball, and using it well. At the other end, he is as natural as it gets. You can see why he had those games in the NAB League with a billion score involvements. He knows where to run and is a natural with ball in hand. Great goal today too, he kicked those goals regularly last year so hopefully we get to see plenty more of it.

- A lot of positivity today. Like an unreal amount. The midfield looked deep and threatening with LDU, Simpkin, Greenwood, Powell, Cunnington, Phillips, Scott, and Howe. The Forwards were dangerous with Curtis, Zurhaar, Larkey, Comben, Sheezel, Ford, and Turner. The backs were sound with McKay, Logue, McDonald, Perez, Ziebell, Bonar, Bergman and Drury. It's going to be a long wait until Friday to see if we look this promising against a side that hasn't won only six games in two years.

  • Cunners - worked his way into the game but equally as impressive forward as midfield. I can see his midfield minutes being cut back to 50% given the number of midfield options we have now and the need to better players in the forward half
Feel like this almost understates Cunners work today as a forward, he seemed really dangerous every time he was down there whether that was as a marking target or making the play by hand.

If he had kicked accurately today and snagged 4 would your view be different ? Had quite a bit of it today.
Not substantially different. Not a good enough forward to displace Larkey/Comben, not mobile enough to be the third kpf and his ruck work is a slight shade below Xerri.

Happy to be proved wrong, but there are some real challenges to overcome.

Good to hear there was a big crowd there today, looked good on the video link. Any ideas on approx numbers for the game and then the family day?
Not sure I'd say it was a big crowd, but anytime we get AFL action at Arden St it has a great vibe.

Would love to see us get a couple of H&A games there (standing room only setup).

Heck, they are doing it at Mount Barker, so why not Arden St?

We appear pretty well set to play Comben as a key forward partnered with Larkey. I wouldn't rule out the prospect of Xerri and Goldy sharing the ruck duties. Sounds like land of the giants but I think Clarko will be smarter with rotations so that we never have all of them in the forward line at one time.

Was really impressed with Bergman due to the fact that he had his season cut short and started full contact training maybe about a month ago, I thought his composure was great which made him hit his targets to advantage.

I reckon Clarko is a fan.
