FTA-TV Is Breaking Bad the greatest show of all time?

In no particular order... The Wire, Oz, Breaking Bad, Deadwood, The Sopranos.... all massive quality in my humble opinion.

Love The Simpsons, love South Park, love The Office. (UK version with the magnificent Ricky Gervais.)

I've enjoyed True Blood, thought the first season of Boardwalk Empire was very good and have Six Feet Under on my "to watch" list.... haven't seen a single episode yet, but will.

Having said all that, don't watch a heap of TV at all. (Despite working in the industry.) I've seen most of the above on DVD or torrents (Simpsons and South Park excluded) and that was over a period of years.

By the way, Merry Christmas for tomorrow all. :thumbsu:

I'd also add, in no particular order, Sopranos, Six Feet Under, BSG and I love Mad Men. Haven't see Deadwood, but will dive into it over summer.

Deadwood is excellent. To the op, it's up there, but so is Justified, Deadwood, Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, Game Of Thrones, The Wire, The Sopranos, The Walking Dead and probably about 4 or 5 other series I have seen.

There is an Oz series called Tangle, which is really good as well. And even though it may not be the greatest of all-time I'm a sucker for Damages.

^ Breaking Bad at least has longevity over most of those shows.

Too early to start rating Thrones, Homeland, Boardwalk and Walking Dead among the greatest shows of all time. Great starts, sure.

See, it's funny, Boardwalk Empire leaves me cold. I can appreciate its acting, its production values, just about everything about it, but I find it a little mechanical and soulless. It doesn't grab me in the same way some of these other shows do.
I'm glad someone agrees. I never got past about six episodes. Too much of that Irish woman and not enough Omar.

Breaking Bad, The Wire and Deadwood were all brilliant shows

The Sopranos is the greatest TV show of all time, closely followed The Wire.

Just so many brilliant characters.

Sopranos is one of those shows that dragged on so long it's quality was lost.

I do agree it was one of the greats in the early seasons.

I found it only dragged on inbetween the first 3 episodes of S.6 and the last 3 episodes of S.6. The first 3, the last 3, and every other season are to an extremely high quality in my view.

Also, an average Sopranos episode is still way better than most things on TV.

Those who stuck it with beyond the first 6 episodes had their patience and perseverance rewarded.
I'll admit it got off to a slow start but from halfway through season one it has been top shelf quality.

Only one mention of The West Wing in this thread makes me sad :(
Forgive the "youngens" they do not understand true quality, in fact they might not have even seen it.

Easily one of the best TV series I've seen, I reckon they could bring it back with an entire new cast and it would work again.:)

For me, yes, it is the best "drama" show of all time. I've never watched a show that has me on the edge as much, that I've finished watching and just sat there head-****ed as much. It is truly brilliant TV.

Seinfeld is "alright".

Curb Your Enthusiasm is Seinfeld with balls.

Again, because it isn't designed to cater to sickly sweet free to air television.

I've always said CYE is Seinfeld on crack. It's kind of killed Seinfeld for me, because it makes you realise how little Jerry had to do with it, and that it's all down to the brilliance of Larry David.

I was more captiated by The Wire, but maybe that's because I now have an iphone.

in my opinion Prison Break is without doubt one of the best TV series of all time and coming in close is Dexter.

lol at dexter. great couple of seasons followed by a couple of average ones and one that was utter garbage.

If Prison Break had of ended once they broke out or just a little bit after (say enough time to expose the conspiracy etc.) then I would agree with you, but for me it dragged on way too long and lost its touch.

Judging from your posts on the BB threads, I must say this surprises me greatly Lance :p

Agree with what you've said though, it's almost hard to watch at times because there's so much tension you're expecting shit to go down at any moment, something simple like Walt driving his car has me just about at the nervous wreck level. Can't recall ever looking forward to a final season as much as I am with BB, no matter how it ends I'll be left cold and empty for years to come.

hehe yeah, no surprises there from me

Totally agree with all your post

Ok, as a person who just found this show in the past two months, let me give my opinion:

- The first two seasons are definitely weaker than the second two. It's a show that grows, and grows on you and it's worth watching through the first two seasons.

- For mine, the most interesting two characters are Mike and Gus, Mike especially. Which is why I am disappointed why they didn't arrive earlier.

- The show doesn't particularly look like it's got great production values. Some scenes look dull, faded and dated, as if it was shot in the 90s-early 2000s and everything still had that dull video sheen to it.

- None of the characters are particularly likable. This makes sense however. This line of work is not likely to have many people with a heart of gold. This is a show not built on connection but intrigue. It's got me hooked. Yes, I don't really care about any of the characters, but I am interested in seeing how it plays out. That said, the killing at the end of season three did shock me (and if you didn't want to know the score and I've ruined season 3 for you, why were you in this thread in the first place?)

- I agree the flashforwards sucked. When the camera panned to show the skyline and we saw ominous smoke in the sky, that looked interesting. But nothing eventuated. A disappointing result.

- That said, I think it's a great show and I think people genuinely like it, and are not drawn to any easter eggs or things like that, which quite frankly hasn't crossed my mind and isn't why I like the show. I think when the av club gives episodes an A I don't think they're engaging in too much hyperbole. Yes, the av club are probably breaking bad's biggest fans, but it's still a very high quality show.
