Is geelong slipping?

ROFL @ the hawthorn bandwagon that arrived at this thread.

Knew I shouldn't have opened this. Shouldn't have expected realistic replies.

But yes, they are not as good as they were maybe mid last year but as they say in Hawthorn "WHAT ABOUT ALL THE INJURIES?!?!?!?!?!"

A few points. Mostly related.

1. Depth. Geelong are a very experienced side. They have 6-8 players outside their '22' who are mature/experienced enough to be considered as regular contributors.
2. Injuries. They've had the usual 3-4 all year - of late it's climbed as high as 9 (I think) of their 22.
3. Aura. Geelong 07 happened to fall in a year when their major rivals (Eagles, Swans, Saints) all fell apart. An amazing season (and following media drivel) resulted in something of an 'aura' around them. Teams went into their shell, Geelong became more attacking and simply ran their opponent into the ground.
4. Age. Geelong have 6 or so players in the 'twilight' of their careers (29+). These players, whilst still very good may not be at their 'peak' anymore.
5. Competition. Saints are fit (finally), Hawks slowly getting fit, Doggies mature, etc. Where the teams fell off in 07, they are generally in front this season.

All of these are reasons contributing towards geelong's 'slide'.

As a direct comparison to Hawks (seeing as Geelong posters like it so much)...Hawks are 3-4 years younger (equivalent to Cats 06), have had worse injury run - though finally starting to come right. Our 'depth' has been 17/18/19 year olds, or 22yo's coming back from 4 years of injury.

Personally im not sure what to make of the cats atm.. im not writing them off but im not sure if they can make it, i know we dont have our full strength side but i think we can still be a threat in the finals.
Watching games now they definetly dont have the same game plan as they used to. No one gets the chance to run on like they used to because teams are blocking the open spaces due to zoning.
Still having ottens, johnson, scarlett and taylor back i think we can do something this year. Time will tell anyway, bring on finals to see if cats lift the intensity (which im sure they will)
Dont forget there are 6 other teams going for a grand final. Its kinda disrespectful towards them to even ignore those teams.

The amazing team that is geelong is no doubt the best in the league with that amazing win loss record but does anyone else feel they are just falling back with the pack now?

still an amazing team and I classify them the best in the league right now.

last 4 games

6 point loss to st kilda
42 point loss to brisbane
1 point win over hawthorn
2 point win over adelaide

Who knows this could actually do good for them then they will dominate in finals?

but next year I think we will see a more even spread and not really a stand out team unless saints continue their domination

I'm amazed it's taken people this long to notice. Last 4 games? For starters you missed out on a 7 goal win over Melbourne, but you might as well have said last 18. Geelong have not been at their best at any point this season. They have been patchy and inconsistent virtually from round 1. Round 5 against Brisbane is the only time that I've seen them play 4 consistent hard quarters of football. For them to still be equal premiership favourites (or thereabouts) is laughable honestly. Proves that most football judges simply don't pay attention.

Look at some of the guys who have been in the seniors recently - Lonergan, Gillies, Tenace - do you really think they'd be anywhere near our best 22? Of course not.

Geelong's only chance is if everyone is fit by September, Ottens included. And that is a massive, massive if. We're clearly number 2 behind St.Kilda - it's their premiership to lose.

the thing is there is very little improvement left in geelong

unless selwood becomes another gary ablett again, the only player that can make geelong any better is tom hawkins in the forward line

their inadequate forward line is what is probably going to stop them winning any more than 1 premiership

That's right, getting out scored for three quarters.

Geelong has lost its aura. Once the umps realise it they'll stop getting the armchair ride and finish mid table.

Ah, so a game doesn't go for 4 quarters? I thought the final score was the one that mattered. Obviously not.

Good to see Whorethorn supporters are still ignorant subhuman scum.

Exactly.

Yes, Geelong is still a great team. But all of Geelong's players have been closely scrutinized by every opposing team. There are no more surprises left in the Geelong lineup, and we all know how many players they have who are soon to retire.

Geelong supporters have learnt why back-to-backs is so difficult. I found it laughable that they actually expected to win two in a row after breaking a 40+ year drought.

I think Geelong is still a real chance for the flag this year but St.Kilda must be favourites. Nobody 'fears' Geelong anymore like teams used to. If the Cats win the flag this year they'll be no more talk of "dynasties" or stupid media comments like 'invincible' etc.

I'm not sure I'd agree with that. Maybe not much improvement left at the top of the list, but if you watch our games this year, pretty much the only thing keeping us in it is the improvement from the bottom half of the list. We've had a pile of injuries this year, and it's been the improvement of players like Hawkins, Byrnes, Varcoe, Mumford are all having great seasons, not to mention some great contributions from some very young players. As for the inadequate forward line, we've had an inadequate forward line for 2 years, kicking straight is a bigger issue.

But have we slipped? For sure - we've been the best team for 2 seasons, but this season we've never been the best. The premiership is St Kilda's to lose. We can only hope we get some good luck with injuries and hit some form come finals.

I don't think that some of the players of the 2007 premiership will come up again. In particular I don't think hanging out for Otto will be too smart. He was great in September 2007 but I think that was his peak. As much as I love him I think he is past his best. Harley was nowhere near match fit today. Tom Hawkins needs to toughen up. He often went the man instead of the ball and a few he shied right out of. I hope a few more players stand up before the finals. Maybe I am being a bit harsh but injuries are starting to take their toll.

Love this thread. Hawthorn supporters saying Geelong are struggling!

We were an umpires whistle away from beating St Kilda, that was without Ottens and Johnson. We didn't take the Brisbane game seriously resting several blokes knowing we have a top two spot sewn up. Then have beaten in-form teams Hawthorn and Adelaide without our two best defenders.

Apparently the players have been hammered in training lately in the build up for finals. I think we are going along quite nicely.

No, you were a Gardiner's amazing mark away. Saints beat an 'in form' Adelaide by 57. Ottens is a big question mark at best! You think other teams aren't preparing their players for finals?

Tom hawkins has been the big letdown for geelong. they were expecting him to rise to mooney's level this year. young forwards like tippett, kennedy, white and anthony have risen to the task early.

i suspect hawkins is more like a cloke than a franklin-atheletic type. cloke has mules like davis and didak backing him up unlike byrnes and stokes who like easy ball. hawkins will hit his early peak in 2011 i suspect, but by then the core of geelong's team will have become tired/old.

if geelong dont win this year i dont think they will have a chance until 2015. but i think geelong supporters should stop bitching and be happy that they atleast got 1 flag out of this group.

Err, forget Byrnes and Stokes. Heard of Chapman and Steve Johnson?

And Hawkins hasn't disappointed. He's done about as expected, sometimes better, sometimes worse. He compares pretty favourably with most of the young forwards you have mentioned.

No, you were a Gardiner's amazing mark away

You are conveniently forgetting in the final quarter - a piss poor umpire decision not bring play back after we didn't get advantage from a free kick and a marginal decision against Mooney in a marking contest. Let's not pretend St Kilda were superior on the day.

If you call beating an inform, fully fit, and rampant Hawthorn side with a seriously depleted team slipping, then sure. Same goes for beating a serious top 4 contender without your two key backs.

Let's get real.
There's only 1 team with a forward line capable of troubling the Saints defence and that's Collingwood.
Everyone else is making up the numbers.

hahahaha collingwood has a forward line??

lol

travis cloke HAHAH HACK
paul medhurts Midget hack
jack "huge ****ing head" anthony mega hack!!
Leon "spin my finger up my arse" davis only shows up in junk time so hack
Dale thomas see leon davis

collingwood are a bunch of ferral "lets all get tattoo sleves" morons who think they have a buck's chance at winning a flag under mick malthouse

Of course they're slipping.

A team that lost 3 times in 50 something games has gone within 3 points of losing 4 out of its last 5 and was outplayed by the bottom team for a while too.

That is slipping! whatever the reasons (injuries, training, taking it easy, yoo old) they are playing the worst football they have in since the first 5 rounds of 07.

Who's fully fit? We were missing 6 (williams, dew, campbell, ladson, young, croad) premierships playes,

Don't disagree except for this bit. Outplayed by the bottom side for a bit? 44 points up at quarter time and finished winning by 46 is not bad for a Rd 16 nothing game. Hawthorn would take that in a heartbeat right now.
