The 2025 season will be upon us before we know it. So with that in mind who is it a big one for? It doesn’t necessarily have to be who will have a breakout season, it may involve a player fighting to maintain his spot. Either way, who has a lot on the line heading into 2025?

Going to go a little left field here and will explain why in a second - but Jack Scrimshaw.

Played such a big role for us this year really went to another level with more defensive responsibilities. Prove to us this is the full time standard for you now without regressing or losing your spot to any of the incoming key backs.

Bloke is absolutely cream now. I am not surprised if we swing him forward at some point.

Well it's a big year for everyone of course as complacency is one of our biggest threats for the upcoming season. But in addition to the above players, I think it's a big year for Cam Mackenzie. If he can get to the level of the really elite young players across the league that would just about be the last piece of the puzzle for us (assuming Dear comes on and Lewis gets back). He's at the age now where it's time to step up and be a match winner.

Suprise packets of 2024.

Scrimmers- turned a massive corner. Consistent application let his talent shine.

Calsher-from project player/long shot to potential star KPF and saviour in 12 months. Unbelievable. We have been truly kissed on the you know what here.

Massimo- Wow, no contract to AA squad. Kissed again.

Frosty- out of nowhere he reinvented himself into a "reliable" lock down defender. Went full James Frawley and was far more effective for it.

(Hopefull) surprise packets of 2025.

Ward+McKenzie, high picks, time to show it. Would love to see them become consistent effective ball winners/uses at senior level.

CJ, was surprised at his last contract extension length. Mitchell obviously has big plans for him. Can he get and stay fit?
Can he become an effective player with ball in hand?

McCabe, Calsher 1st season has probably increased our hopes this kid is just as talented and ready to step up.
Hopefully a full pre season will allow him to show us his potential.

If these 4 come on. LTFO
A long shot I know, but so were the 4 in 2024.

Josh Ward (after poor old DGB) was our first real decent pick, as the rebuild got underway (as I recall).

If he gets near as good as we all hoped (perhaps, expected), we have an elite accumulator, ball-user & runner.

He complements the others beautifully, & his leadership potential is well-documented.

Go you good thing!

CJ - Needs to have a clear run at an uninterrupted pre season to get back to his best. Will need to fight for his spot back but has the ability. He won't want to break down again as he will be up against it with the depth we now have.

Ward / MacKenzie - We need one of these two to take the next step to add more depth and variety to the midfield.

Scaife - There is a spot for a key forward for the taking and if he has a massive pre season he could play some games next year.

Kade Simpson. Fitting all the defenders in for most efficient mix and who he gives up to move forward going to be fascinating.

I’m going to go with Finn. He’s got great tools and showed some real capability, but he probably needs to work his way into the best 22 instead of the emergencies. I think a bit of that is creating the right role to set him up for success that complements our way of playing.

I reckon he’s got it in him.

Seamus Mitchell and Jasper Scaife

Every year (likely every month) the recruiting team look at our list to find deficiencies. In 2023 the recruiting teams answer was that there was a deficiency with our Key Position Defenders. And so MM and Co found players to fill those roles displacing DGB and The Big Easy.

To my mind, the next two two deficiency to be addressed are the KPF (which puts Scaife under the microscope) and a mid with breakaway speed. If Seamus can partly fill this role along with Moore, CMac, and the Wiz, while also holding down the back pocket, he would cement his place in the team. If he does not expand his range of playing positions, he may find it difficult to hold his place in the seniors.

The kid has all of the tools. He just needs a big season to show them.

If the following is achieved, we are a strong chance for a premiership
  • McKenzie takes the next step and becomes a reliable mid,
  • Calsher develops some core strength and can run out games,
  • Wiz continues on his late season trajectory
  • We get at least the same level of output from Chol

Ginni - yeah I loved his antics the whole year. I even loved to see you in two weeks bit and I want him yo keep doing it... But if you are going to do it then you need to kick 3 goals plus that game and stamp yourself as one of the elite small forwards of the game.

CJ - as someone else posted, he has the ability to be a game breaking x factor point of difference that you need to get over the line in finals (can we bring in Shaun Burgoyne as a specialist coach to teach that?

Mitch Lewis - if Mitch is fit and kicks 40 goals we win the flag - not for him doing that but because Calsher and Chol don't get the best defenders on them and their games go to the next level

Ward + McKenzie - the reason we didnt go after Bailey Smith was these two will be better - McKenzie could be a firestarter like Will Ashcroft was for the Lions. Ward is fourth in line after Nuke, Day and Worpel - he needs to go up a level.

The coaching staff - we now have so many options. The tall defenders mean Sicily can just be the classiest half back distributer in the game and Scrimshaw can play intercept mark all day. Both of them can swap for turns up forward. Weddle can play any position on the ground (like Adam Goodes in his prime) maybe we can play as an additional onballer floating anywhere. Frost can play small freeing Hardwick to go forward. I hope they develop all these possibilities so when things arent going out way we can quickly change styles, game plans and personnel to stop stagnating and quickly turn a situation around.

Good times

Its a big year for the club. Moving into The Kennedy Centre in 2025. Great new facility, increased expectations.

I am also looking forward to seeing if Max Ramsden can establish himself in the side in the tall forward/2nd ruck role.
I hope Max can add something to our forward line, especially with M. Lewis out for a good chunk of the year, and provide even more flexibility to the team in the vital 2nd ruck role.
Has done his apprenticeship. Time to move into the big leagues now Max
