It's time to bring back Waverley

Most of you older fokes who like the ground are just letting nostalgia cloud your judgement, my old man who is a Hawforn supporter is the same way. Now I never did attend the ground but from the stories I've heard about it, I've always thought it must of been one hell of a shit hole.

in a location in the middle of no where, crappy seating, sloppy ground surface for any conditions that weren't dry, lack of athomehere, laughable scoreboard, bad for car parking or public transport etc. It really must of been one hell of a blessing in 2000 when then known as Colonial Stadium replaced it. An upgrade in every way.

Except that at Colonial, the tenants get bent over on their ground deals.

doubt it. we all knew it was a shithole, but at the time the footy was still dominated by suburban grounds which, unless in the social clubs, were again shitholes, and somtimes even more so. the G was the only luxury for the mug in the outer.

anything favourable said about arctic park is purely from the footy played on it. some magnificent memories.

now for misery, you had to try a night game in the old midweek night comps. ****ing cold.

That ******* ground. Looked and felt like it had been built by the Soviet Union. Concrete bunker. The stands were built at too much of a lean angle so that if you weren't within 10 rows of the fence you were miles away from the action. Those shitty wooden benches. Always ******* raining and the car park, don't get me started on the ******* car park. Good riddance to the shittest ground ever to host footy games and I'm including Victoria Park in that assessment.
Save your tears bro, Waverley was a massive step up from that festering shitpit they called Kardinia Park and that's a fact.

It was also an immeasurably better ground than many others of the same period, namely Whitten Oval, Moorabbin, Windy Hill, & Victoria Park. Princes Park I always liked but Waverley's surface was infinitely better and it didn't carry the stench of being the home of Carlton Football Club.

The fans got bent over at Waverley, at least one day the AFL will own Etihad.
So until that time, the tenant clubs should grasp their ankles and repeat to themselves "it doesn't hurt, not a bit, pain is good"

They get disequal funding due to the amount of games they have to play there.

Agreed but it's like being robbed every day but knowing you'll be reimbursed - you are still getting robbed.

You've spouted some shit in your time, but this is a new PB.

The truth is that any younger supporter today might not return a second time to their club of choice if they had to play them at grounds around when Waverley was operational.

Roofs, grounds which like an peat bog, food that was shite, parking facilities that were average, opposition supporters who in many cases acted like rockapes at their home ground, racism on the ground and in the crowd, supporters who took advantage of the full strength beer were all around the place.

One of those things that fortunately will never be replicated again.

Not to mention the king hits from behind in what was many eras full of thugs.

The AFL today has its faults as well, but gee the transition from those old VFL days 25 + years ago to now is just about the biggest in world sport I would think. The overall professionalism barely scratches the surface in how much better shape the game/competition is.

I'm surprised the shithole lasted for as long as it did. 29 years from 1970 to 1999.

Yeah, it's not an ideal situation, but the issue gets covered, and it was a good decision long-term for the AFL to by 2025 have two well-sized, centrally located stadiums, one of which they owned.

It's a far less significant issue for smaller clubs than TV exposure for example.

I think you're forgetting how thoroughly shithouse Kardinia Park was back in the 80s. Its been upgraded several times since.

KP is probably more easily accessible from the Melbourne CBD than Waverley too.

Precisley. The trip took us 45 minutes from the inner east on good days and about an hour and 20 to Geelong even when there was no bypass and the traffic on the smaller highway through the city after getting off the fway was an absolute congested syd.

Transport was better and quicker (train) to Geelong than the bus and train to Waverley (cause some deadshit didn't think rail would be worth it or needed there) and the trip took longer than going to Geelong from the city quite often.

As against actually owning waverley ?

Middle of nowhere is middle of their home suburbs for over a million people, who are used to no public trnasport which is practically non existant east of warrigal road

Yet you still expect melburnians to travel to geelong ?
