Length of the deal only matters if he leaves after it. You could argue he could do that with or without a contract.
If he doesn't perform as expected, using the Suns method, we'd be asking for at worst pick 7?

I was thinking more around why we'd give up such a high value pick on a player we're only giving a short contract to. Bit of a mismatch in valuation there

You know one of our greats that doesnt like us much anymore unless google advertising is involved
He actually never said he doesn't like the club, he said he does and hopes his kids play for us

I'd heard the contract was going to be something along the lines of; $4mil over 5 years - (Avg of 800k)
year 1 - 1.5mil
year 2 - 750k
year 3 - 600k
year 4 - 600k
year 5 - 600k

More than happy if this is the case, front load that contract while we have the cap space, then enjoy the fruits in year 2 onward, but will be interesting to hear how it ended up, 3 years doesn't seem like a long enough deal, managers always want more than that for guys to move clubs these days

They’ve backed them selves in for a bigger payday

It's been confirmed that the contract was grossly exaggerated:

Agree

Front ended contracts put club at risk once the player has made all their cream, they quickly seek a trade like Lobb.....

Would be Rankine backing himself at the absolute top of his game being 27 to negotiate a 5 year deal to take him to 32 .

The flip side being if he doesn't perform like we hope is that we haven't flushed 2 years and a further 1.6 million down the toilet. I like the 3 year contract.

Not sure how to feel about giving up pick 5 for a player we only have on a 3 year deal
As opposed to using pick 5 for a player who’d be on a two year contract (and could walk out on that aka JHF?).
