It needs to be done, one way or another
Agreed. But bypassing the Constitution is NOT the way. Either the state government was dumb or they were being smart arses. I'd say dumb, because the High Court case must have cost us $$$$.

Far from it. Dan thought he could be smart and circumvent Section 90 of the Constitution. He had a track record of doing things in his inimitable way, but on this occasion the High Court swiftly found against the State of Victoria. So the burden then fell on the governments to find another way to make up for lost excise on EV cars
He was trying to get in before inevitably the federal government does it

So he was dumb! He must have known, and by 'He' I mean the government, that a state imposing a 'levy' is forbidden under s.90 of the Constitution. How much money did this charade cost taxpayers?

And you say Dan was trying to get in before the Feds. The High Court decision was handed down in 2023. We are now in 2025

It was the right thing to do but the wrong way to go about it. It was smart to implement it now instead of when electric vehicles become the majority.

And you can guarantee when that happens a federal government will be wanting to replace the shortfall of the fuel excise.

It's a problem you can fix now and not piss off a few people or a problem later where it pisses off the entire electorate

I don't want to get into a pi55ing competition. You say it was the right thing to do, but Victoria had to repay every penny derived from the tax, and pay legal costs. In other words, nothing gained and back to square one. A costly mistake, but when its not your money what does it matter?

With the rise of EVs we're even more screwed. They're heavier and do more damage, plus they pay no fuel excise, so don't contribute to road maintenance.

These two selfish pricks have a lot to answer for - Chris Vanderstock and Kath Davies launched the lawsuit

They tried to put a levy on EVs.
EVs aren’t that much heavier.
Do you prefer fumes?

And yet states Can impose tolls on roads to help pay for upkeep. Only a slightly different levy

Maybe the e vehicle levy would have provided more funds for upkeep of roads
The High Court ruled that the EV tax was not “a licence or permit fee” for an activity that comes under a regulatory scheme — as Victoria tried to argue — but a tax on the use of an EV, which can only be imposed by the federal government.

If there was unchallenged precedent…it may have stuck. Now it look like it will go via the feds and more admin costs

Looking at the latest polls and my bet is Jacinta is about to "Battin" down the hatches! She's in strife and Sunday in Melbourne might just be the breaking point for a lot of people?
I wouldn't have thought so. Protests on Australia day have been thing for years.

This year might be a little more ugly than previous years, i hope it isn't, but i have a horrible feeling that as more support is being gained for the day to remain on January26th, Sunday in the Melbourne CBD is not the place to be?.

I think Victorians switched off some time ago with Jacinta. But cannot see her recovering from such a slump in the polls even if 22 months out from an election. Too much damage done and being done. And Victorians are just not into SRL.

The promise yesterday of $300M on road improvements in Melbourne’s west is a cheap hollow prank weeks out from a by-election. But I doubt anyone believes it is genuine or sincere. Jacinta has learnt she can promise the world and never have to deliver. When you hear that a fire station in Clyde North (population 35,000) promised in 2021 is still an empty site, you get the drift.

Level crossing removals, north east link, metro tunnel wester tunnel not enough for the public? Countless other projects delivered.

As mentioned there is much more infrastructure to be done as we are behind where we should be, it’s no time to slack off (not to mention pushing canberra for a fairer share of funding)

So the suppose choice is between libs who will cancel projects or labor who really mess up running govt internally?

How do you vote?

What will LNP cancel? You been listening to the spin doctors of the ALP?

The new infrastructure is commendable but one thing will kill this government - the realisation that this state will be saddled with an unprecedented debt. I know Labor sympathisers will say "debt is good", but it's not good when fundamental services, maintenance and other capital works have to be canned.

How do you vote? After 12 years it will be time for a monumental change.

They could commit to the current infrastructure pipeline. If they don’t want to cancel SRL why is the age etc waging a campaign to do so.
It’s they who need to prove they have learned from the Bailleu napthine years.

As for the debt this Victorian infighting is great for qld and nsw who benefit from funding we aren’t getting which our politicians should be combining to fight for

As always it will come down to what Melbourne wants. Regional centres of Geelong, Ballarat, and Bendigo have been well looked after under the ALP and are terrified of being forgotten by the Libs. The rural areas always go National. Eastern Melbourne will see a few seats changes hands. It will all come down to whether or not Melbourne's west will hold for the ALP, the signs don't look great for them at the moment.

Who believes the spin? Only diehard supporters

According to the Age Jacinta is in alot of strife polls wise and there is a real risk they might lose the Werribee seat which they have held since 1979. She leads a very tired government.

They need to pick quality candidates to stand a chance, the good thing for the ALP in Werribee is they finally moved away from staffers and picked a school teacher with real runs on the board in the community, while the Libs picked a real estate agent who bought his way in.

Vic Labor are lucky the election isn't for another two years, they'll be tightening the belt this year, have people using the Metro and West Gate Tunnels by the end of the year, and have the time to get their house in order.
But if their current performance costs Federal Labor government Allan will be gone by June.

Any proof to validate this claim?
