Bowes is about to be 25 and played 5 games this season.

If he turns out to be a spud for us, I'd rather we eat the 1.6mil and he is off the books in 2 seasons rather than still be paying him 400k when he's 29.

You're acting like there are 0 risks in giving him 4yrs/400k.

That may be your preference, but it is undoubtedly easier for Geelong to manage an average $400k salary vs. an $800k salary that would instantly make him your 2nd or 3rd highest paid player and a top 40 player in the league.

His 2022 season was heavily jeopardised by shoulder surgery which robbed him of a pre-season and set him well behind the 8 ball. He's a solid player

You are giving his money to Berry and Long and losing pick 7.

If you delayed the big money for Rowell and Anderson by a year there would be a new CBA in place with a bigger salary cap.

Geelong have recruited well enough to give them selves these opportunities, the only two failed recruits have just freed up this money for the next one.

But it’s guys like Close Atkins Miers De Koning Stengle Henry that have made this space for us as well lesser known players performing at great levels are the reason for success and cap space being available at this time. We chased a big name recruit Cameron next in line was probably Huggins Dahlhaus and then Smith for a year or two on nothing huge I imagine, so 2 of our 3 top payed recruits have finished and have probably got rid of 900 k of deals and then our captain has probably added another 500-600 on top of that.
But we are not screaming out for players because of this second tier of players elevation and therefore we can take a risk on a guy with a lot of talent who hasn’t performed to it yet and his salary because of the space we can take on without the desperation of players to spend that money on. The only thing I would of looked at would of been Grundy with Collingwood paying 250-300 a year of his and adding Henry in as a sweetener, because this is our area of weakness for the last 10 years- the ruck.

It was in GCS interest to use pick 7 and not get Long and Berry.
