The kicker is the lack of comms. If he came out (at least to the club) about his position around not getting vaccinated and took it on the chin until mandates changed then there'd be a simple path forward.
By all accounts he's ghosted the club and teammates, posted a cryptic message on socials, lawyered up and depending on which reports you believe has missed vaccine appointments made for him by the club.
It's very hard to come back from that type of behaviour.
I get that he probably feels isolated and as a society we need to find better ways of dealing with people with diametric views but it's a two way street and by all accounts Jack has done everything in his power to polarise himself at the club.

I haven't been backed into any corner. My argument has always been that these mandates have passed whatever usefulness they might’ve had and their lifespan is going to be shorter than most in this thread think. And we need to plan for what we do with Darling when that happens; if we don't want him, someone else will.

the thing i feel you're missing with rescinding mandates too soon is that they worked because the alternative (not getting vaxxed) meant potential long term societal/financial suffering.
Given the amount of misinformation that is available today, the carrot and stick approach was needed. If i were vaccine hesitant and I got vaccinated just because of the deadlines and the impact then I'd be unbelievably dirty if there was a flip one or two months later. Purely from a future effectiveness of mandates and vaccination we need to keep the mandates around for 2022.

Ignoring the fact you have swung the argument around to this because you have been backed into a corner about your previously false statements. Let's say this is your key argument.
We have a player who has refused to vaccinate so won't play this year. He had a fairly ordinary year last year and will be 31 and won't have played a game in about 18 months come season 2023. From all reports we know he has also refused communication with the club and his playing group. There is also a fair indication that he is claiming mental illness in order to get paid his full $700 K per annum while providing 0 output and has lawyered up to fight the club over his contract of which he refuses to fulfill.
Do we want to continue to pay this bloke 3/4 M a year for the next 4 years? I hope we are thinking about the future because if these assumptions are correct, and I believe most of them are, then there is no way on hell I would have this bloke on our list.
fu**. Him . Off.
We paid McGovern a lot more than this to have a similar output last year. Just sayin'.

I agree, but communication is always a 2-way street.

If the club is reaching out just wanting to know, then that's on Jack.

But if the club is calling saying 'we've booked a vax for you for 2pm today, which being a work day for you should not be an issue, so please let us know once that is done' then him ignoring them isn't as bad (assuming he has at the very least communicated his hesitancy or downright refusal to get jabbed).

The truth is probably somewhere in between. TBH if all he is getting from the hierarchy is pressure to get the vax then I'd say most of us might end up ignoring those calls in similar circumstances.

I hope the club just plays a really straight bat with him - we want you on the list, the AFL have set the rules such that you can't attend work in any manner, we have a business decision to make that is within the rules around your salary, we want you back with your teammates/friends/family as soon as that is possible (either through vax, or mandate changes) and we are here to support you (remotely, as is the requirement) as much as you need. Also, we want to reinstate you to full salary and full duties as soon as that is possible within the rules.

The issue being that there are very few free agent guns (excluding ex academy ones and those who get arrested overseas).

Paying out a massive amount in the cap, plus a massive draft hand is poor business. Especially so when the list is in a rebuild stage. We need 4-5 talented players at the end of this year, not just 1. (Obviously there is risk with the draft, but we really are in a position where we need to invest in that risk asap).

List rebuilds can be fast tracked though. And a good blend of using your best picks, aggressively using excess cap space and trading with later picks and later future picks, all should and will be explored.

I agree out 1st rounders should be valued and used unless an outstanding opportunity comes up.

There are only two RFA I would be interested in and those are both Victorians, so unlikely, not impossible, but unlikely. They are Short (Ric) and Amon (Port). Both still young and good mids.

We should also be using any freed up cap space to temp younger players coming out of contract.

Example:

SPP Port. Time for the reverse Ebert?

Devon Robinson (Bris) All contending clubs have tight caps. Lions FS pick in 2022 could be pick 1 Ashcroft. Offer $$ Lions cant match our 2022 2nd and a future 2nd with Lions future 3rd coming back, points = a late 1st.

And we also keep an eye on fringe players like a Witherden who would cost a 3rd round pick.

Not saying all this happens in one year but over 2-3 years you can bring in multiple 1st round picks at the draft and also use spare cap space aggressively using later future picks.

And I do like our pick swap history, manufacturing additional picks.

I live with an Eagles fan who has been with you guys since inception and he’s pretty ashamed that after all the work Jack Darling has put in over the years for your club and your enjoyment to see he’s now getting crucified for his own personal choice. Anyone want to explain to me how what he said is wrong?

According to the club he is stood down from duties due to not meeting the vaccination requirements.

JD can claim a medical certificate all he wants, but that isn't the reason he isn't at training.

The courts may decide the legality of it (and financial outcomes) but his Instagram post was pretty much BS.

He's claiming a "workplace injury" as the reason he can't train/play. i.e. positioning himself for legal action.

Sounds like your mate is across it, couldn't he just explain it?

IF he came out like Liam Jones and CEY and said it was his choice and didn't want to take the vaccine I'm sure a lot of us would have accepted that as his choice and move on. Instead he puts up a cryptic instar post citing a "work" relayed injury and has even had a Lawyer involved. Then he goes and dodges the club for the last 4 weeks 0 communication.

Say what you want about the club but they are the best when it comes to looking after their players off field. You only have to recently look at how we handled Venners concussion situation.

Pretty simple; his personal decision is doing wrong by his club, his teammates and society. He's free to make that decision, he's not free from the consequences of it.

Rinse, repeat, make all the same arguments again.

If Darling decided he didn't want to get vaccinated and stood down, I think most Eagles fans would be disappointed but understanding (at least, to some extent). If he demonstrated courage in his convictions, came out and communicated his position clearly... at least that would be something.

Instead he has tried to claim he had a medical exemption, using a Tasmanian doctor whose specialties include polycystic ovary syndrome and 'integrative medicine'. His medical exemption has failed, but he's still claiming that he's off training due to a 'workplace injury', almost certainly setting himself up for a legal challenge against the club in order to continue to get paid.

It's a pretty big F.U. to the club, the players and the fans.

Do we know this for sure??

Sounds like you’re all pretty much guessing because no one knows what happens behind any clubs doors? It’s the AFL and the club who have told him to **** off basically. Why aren’t you more disappointed by the fact this is happening and you’re going to lose a probable 300 game 500 goal player for no reason when mandates will end soon like our other allied countries? Seems like a hero standing up against tyranny.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind. Why bother asking us to explain it then?

Pay attention to what's happening in the Ukraine right now for a perspective on what real tyranny actually looks like

This message is also true but doesn’t make what my mate said any less so.
