News Jack Dyer Stand -Demolition Has Begun

Going under ground would need the Vic government and it ain't gonna happen now due to the debt imposed by covid. That whole Richmond station and Punt Road MCG area could be developed into a Fed square like precinct with cafes bars etc enhancing the MCG experience. It would cost major dollars and as Victoria is now pretty much broke its not gonna happen. Richmond Station is a shithole and well overdue for an upgrade.

I would hate going to the footy if they turned it into another Fed Square. Give me the shithole station and the royal any day.

So if the other stands who would carry the same significance to its community as the JDS is to the Richmond community been knocked down then i can't see the difference as to why the JDS wouldn't be pulled down.
The Richmond fc grandstand is unique in its architecture and history.
The Brunswick St oval grandstand is one grandstand that is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and it will be preserved thank God.

Looks in great nick.
As someone else pointed out.
If the NT are so interested in keeping the JDS in its current location why havn't they given any indication they'll pay for its up keep which even you would admit looks abit of an eyesore atm.

I love the Jack Dyer stand, I love old buildings but I love the RFC at Punt rd more. it will be a lonely old stand if the club has to move to another suburb and that will be a blight on history and tradition.

At Victoria Park I believe the the Ryder stand built in 1909 is protected. The ground itself is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and is of state heritage significance.
And no one ever sees these stands.
The Punt Rd oval stand is easily seen from a major Rd making it even more important to save imo.

Lots of footy played at Victoria park these days as well
Collingwood use it all the time :drunk:

It doesn't look like an eyesore to me at all. When I look at it I feel good knowing all the history involved plus it's a great design that makes modern grandstands look ugly.

So knock it all down and build apartments you reckon?
I’m not saying that at all
But Collingwood moved on from Victoria park and Richmond will need to move on from punt road if the site can’t accommodate the clubs needs

Imagine getting off the train and walking past a closed PRO the club having moved to another suburb but hey there is a derelict stand, Jack Dyer would be rolling in his grave if the RFC move because of the stand

It won't be knocked down and it's poor form from Benny, Peggy and Rhett that has embarrassed the club.
Hope your content with us moving our base because that’s the reality

Perhaps you could do some fundraising and have it moved brick by brick to another local location

I would be happy enough if they moved it to the MCG parkland somewhere although I prefer it stay in its original location as it's an iconic landmark. It would be worth the costs involved and could be used for other things.

We're never gonna leave Punt Rd it's just a threat used by the developers.
That isn’t the developers talking that’s the club
& the reality that all the Victorian clubs that needed to expand its facilities faced when its current sites were no longer suitable
Why would we be any different?
Collingwood, Essendon, Bulldogs, St Kilda, Melbourne have all moved on from spiritual homes
It’s not an empty threat it is the reality
Get your head out of the sand and look at the reality of the situation
Saying it won’t happen won’t stop it

Do you think we're going to leave Punt Rd derelict and move to Craigieburn?
Even if we choose to train somewhere else , we will always keep Punt Rd as our main base.
It is prime real estate and a stones throw from the G, it's 100m from a major train station.
It would be total madness to move away from there totally.

Collingwood did from Victoria park, and Essendon from windy hill
The costs to operate from multiple sites would be massive and more than double, with even more staff needed for caretaking and upkeep of multiple grounds and facilities if it was that simple other clubs would be doing it not to mention unrealistic to have staff and players commuting to different parts of the city

Essendon still holds a lease at Windy Hill which will expire after 2031;[18] the club uses the venue for home matches for its reserves team in the Victorian Football League, and maintains a social club and merchandise store on the site and a safe injecting shed.

You been to windy hill recently?
It’s a dilapidated ghost town deprived of any soul and presence it once had and used a couple of times a month
You want that for punt road?
No more training on weekdays?
No players using the facilities except for a couple of VFL games a month
Just for it to be another VFL ground a shell of its former self?

The most use windy hill social club gets these days are bingo nights

You're assuming it's all the grandstand's fault. The club should have known they wouldn't get the demolition past heritage laws.
It's really poor planning.
They should be lobbying to use space at the G.

Next time you get a chance go make a trip to windy hill
Let me know if you are content with us leaving Punt road and leaving it to the same fate

All for the sake of an old grandstand that can’t even be used for the purpose it was built for in the first place

Ok I'll shut up now but it's not 'just an old grandstand ', it's over 100 years of history and an iconic Melbourne landmark.
Essendon, Collingwood and Fitzroy kept their grandstands.

Who said it hasn’t got past heritage laws?

The National Trust don’t decide these things, Heritage Victoria does.
