just pay homage to old stand in the new stand plus build a massive fu*en dusty statue and who the fu* cares

i would rather stay in punt rd right next to the G because it makes us seem like the fu**en boss of the AFL and all the other clubs hate it
Yep, MCC stuck some of old seating on wall in one of the bars, looks great.
Stick some rotten wood covered in rat poop on new JDS, will look crap but if that’s what it takes.
FFS it’s had a great life, let it RIP and let club progress into next era of its time at Punt Rd.

Let it burn

The stand is nothing significant to the RFC , Its just a rotting stand that is not worth inhibiting the growth of my beloved club
We now have more than just 44 players and 2 coaches and we need the space as well as the revenue that will grow MY CLUB so we never have to become a minnow club. F the stand

My Club is whats important not some crappy stand that has had no use for 50 years of my life

Your statement is wishful thinking without any detail on cost and having enough physical space.
nobody has any costings on here, we are collectively clueless on that front

what we can say is, if we apparently costed for a 4 storey underground carpark(!!), then there is money to refurb the stand twice over.

That we are able to dig to Belgium to make a place to put cars tells you cost is not a relevant issue in this case, so any 'it's too expensive to fix the JDS' post can be discounted immediately.

Space, position, heritage value etc. are the relevant factors to debate.

Hi again BL, I found this example, a cute little old wooden grandstand, retained and relocated for $290k in the Chirnside Park redevelopment, that's in 2018 money:

The JDS is in such a state that if you did try and move it it’s going to completely collapse. Plus there’s all the asbestos you’d need to deal with

Would cost a pretty penny to rebuild it again after that so why would we want to? Just throwing good money away

Let the national trust foot the bill for that of they’re so concerned

colonwood fans getting cut up over a stand they've never been in :drunk:

Those fans are right, not that CFC itself have any right to comment after the way they treated Vic Park on the way out- auctioned off everything that couldn't be jimmied off the walls and left the council with a complete disaster to fix up.

Much better example are the Sydney Swans, who stepped in when the 1926 grandstand at Lakeside oval was in disrepair and threatened with demolition. Even though they had left 25 years before, former champions like Tony Morwood stepped in to stop the loss, nice story here:

I don't particularly like this hybrid model, but today the 1926 grandstand is not rubble, but home to the Victorian Institute of Sport elite training facilities:

You see only negatives, fine, but I see opportunity, see my post above about the VIS state-of-the-art training facilities at the once-decrepit 1926 stand at Lakeside Oval.

Soooo many things can be made of the JDS, incredible potential.

BUT, we will need former club champions/board members to lead it, our Pascoe and Morwood as the Sydney Swans had in 2005, people with a love for the club and it's history but also a positive vision for retaining that into the future.

The Institute of sport is an eyesore, if you’re gonna preserve something preserve it properly not that monstrosity

the only reason the swans stepped in was there was money to be made, where are the seats? Where is the history? In the facade? Or the aluminium windows?

South Melbourne have their old stand but no football club anymore. Same with Fitzroy and Brunswick Street Oval.
I would rather have a strong football club with state of the art facilities over hanging on to an old stand.

At least Fitzroy restored their stand unlike South

The thing is even if we renovated the JDS it would still not be fit for purpose. Modern football clubs and stadiums require space for all sorts of things these days.
Even the Poms demolished the old Wembley stadium with its twin towers. A
stand with much more historical and architectural significance to not only one football club but the whole country.

Absolutely you either restore it properly or burn the campaigner to the ground, it’s either heritage or it isn’t and south Melbourne isn’t , so burn the campaigner

Maybe the underground carpark is a requirement for approval. The new design seems to blend in with the park setting. An above ground 4 storey carpark would stick out like dogs testicles as well as taking up precious park land
MCC can keep their car parks closed to keep the surroundings in great nic(which is heading in that direction anyway) which i think went along way of getting the vote and just as important it'll be bit of revenue stream during the season as well as mon-fri.

Yeah we would have a limited footprint to build on. The council would never approve something that is going to take up existing greenery in that area hence why demolishing the JDS is the only option.

ours is tiny!!!

my god, there is money to be made from the JDS!! It is absolute gold to have that position, with that history, and with that branding (Capt. blood).

I agree, I don't prefer the hybrid model that saved the 1926 Grandstand at South Melbourne, but the incorporation of elite training facilities is highly relevant to what RFC want to do.

I prefer retaining primary purpose as a seated grandstand, which, when refurbished, will attract an elite member category who will be allowed to purchase reserved-seat season tickets for VFL and AFLW games. There is (IMO) a subsection of Tiger fans who are diehard Tigers that love the club's history, feel a connection to the JDS and PRO, have deep pockets, and will pay in advance for a reserved seat in what would be the ultimate membership package that RFC offers ('Capt Blood' packages).

I believe there would eventually be a long waiting list for these reserved seats, they could even be grandfathered within families as generations come and go.

A modernized JDS (within heritage limits) could be a marketing and monetizing wet dream for the club. We will never be able to attract a similar premium for seats in a brand new, cookie-cutter-generic stand.

The blending in is part of the planning requirement
