All the guys I was keen on were gone before Stephenson came to us.
I like this pick.

My point, that everyone is throwing a hissy fit about, is that our recruiting is reckless. We are not in a position to be taking risks, because we have already screwed our list doing the same thing in the past.
Clearly his heart condition is enough of a concern for other clubs not to consider him.
Too many of you are deluded.
There are some People on Here and Social Media who do nothing accept Complain.

The Kid needs a nickname.

Skeletor, or Stentenson
How can you definitively say that other clubs didn't consider him?? He was always rated around the pick 4-6 mark, which is exactly where he ended up going. Reading Cal Twomey's phantom drafts and he said that he would not likely make it past the first round. There were only 4 clubs with a pick before us, so it's impossible to say that other clubs did not consider him. Someone would have definitely taken him I think.
It’s ironic how people are up in arms about us selecting Stephenson – citing risk associated with his heart condition – which is relatively unknown.
Funnily enough, the same people wanted us to select Darcy Fogarty.
Quick reality check…
- Stephenson played 20 games this year across TAC Cup (15 out of 18), Nationals (4 out of 4), and All-Star (1 out of 1).
- Fogarty played 9 games this year across SANFL Colts (5 out of 17), Nationals (4 out of 4)
Agree re comparison to Danger but it’s hard to compare established star to an 18 year old. Others have pointed out Danger was skinny at same age and he obviously had limitations that saw him go at pick 10. I also suspect that with JS being a 2.95sec 20m that Danger would be faster than him (but on checking his draft combine result Danger was 2.92sec so not a big difference http://www.topendsports.com/sport/afl/testing-draft-results-2007.htm
Even if JS doesn’t end up like Dangerfield I’m more than happy for him to be like Peter Matera, as others have suggested in this thread! If he’s ‘only’ a WHE level than we still filled a list need.
Will play in R1 - 100%
Are you able to provide proof of your generalisation? I personally think there’s a very big difference between Fogarty’s well established meniscus tear and Stephenson’s completely unknown heart ailment.
But I digress my initial comment had a dash of sarcasm in merely pointing out his body is a long way off it in terms of AFL readiness, with further thinking on it being that his role will likely be a line breaking more outsider at first he could potentially play year 1 like Dale Thomas did despite being a stick.
Yeah later in the thread after thinking on it and past skinny blokes who played year one I reconsidered but since you haven't got there yet...

Hine already said he's ready to play straight away - and I agree.
Lachlan Whitfield played 19 games in his first year, McCluggage 18 - both similar build.
And I'd like to keep it that wayBecause in bigfooty you can pretend to know things and feel important about yourself.
I’ll back in the cardiologists with years of training that have a duty to make sure the guy is safe in pursuing a footy career over random people on bigfooty
shit. I didn't account for google when I made that rash statementBut I googled it. Surely I'm now an expert.
Definitely "Pacemaker".
It will be his role in the team.
