Speculation Jake Waterman [RFA 2025]

Smith has a few asterisks on the trade value that I expect would drop it.

Waterman is an interesting one because he'd be ufa 20 odd games from now. Why bother trading him in now? Not sure he adds enough to justify a big trade
To try to stay near the top teams will pay up

Yes but its not trade week yet. Eagles would want more than a future 1st. Freo got more for Schultz
If it's next years first wait a year and get the UFA compo.

Doesn't make sense for West Coast to let him go early because they don't get a better trade

Doesn't make sense for Geelong to get him early because we'd be looking for a Cameron replacement and Cameron is still out there kicking bags. That and whatever we give up in trade would be paying for one year of him given he'd be free 20ish games later.

Just doesn’t make sense

Had never kicked more than 18 goals in a season before this year.

He is worth a first and then some.

Thats absolutely absurd.
Geelong f1, with Waterman added to the side would likely be a late 1st.

He is worth more than a late 1st rounder.

It's highly unlikely this year is a flash in the pan, and good KPFs don't come available too often.

Out of curiosity what do you consider Treacy or Amiss to be worth?

Luckily we set the price.

It’s all moot anyway most likely. Just because a team makes a play doesn’t mean the player is interested.

Eagles probably want Bont too. Start the speculation thread.

With Smith added it won't get any worse, you're doing OK at the moment.

Hawkins out Waterman in, an upgrade on this year's form
We haven't beaten a current top 8 team since April. Our best midfielder is our half back flank that we had to move in to stop the bleeding. Our best ruck is also our number 1 KPD who needs imminent knee surgery. Our next best ruck is 22, can't string half a season together, and just had a screw put in his navicular.

Adding Smith is a required step but you're missing several other steps

Josh Treacy probably about a pick 10 and Amiss anywhere from 6 to 10.

Havent had the injury history or the proven non performing years.

This is Watermans first year with an actual KPF spot in the side, being behind guys like JK, Darling and Allen for his entire career is not easy for anybody. Very few KPFs would have gotten a game at the Eagles over the last 15 years.
Certainly both those Freo boys don't on merit until JK retired

Hes got his chance with Allen out for half the year and has taken it.

It would take a fair price to get him, and a fair price involves something to the value of pick 10+ something

Waterman is at least similar value to Treacy

He also started the same way last year before getting Ill, despite being in a far worse team.

This is surely a piss take. If we had Freo’s midfield with blokes like Hayden Young putting it on his tit Waterman would probably have kicked 80 this season.

Eagles hold all the power here as Jake is contracted in 2025. They would have to weigh up whether any offer at the end of next year as an UFA would trigger band one compensation (likely top 5 pick) - which they would prefer.

If they can get another year out of Waterman similar to this year for 2025, on modest wages, and with a potential top 5 pick as compo at the end of next year, they likely hold him to his contract next year (as is their right to do so).

As an aside, Geelong don't make serious offers and commitments to players they think they can't get. Geelong have demonstrated over the years that they will get deals done.

It won't be a popular view with many Cats fans, but it would not surprise me if we offer 'overs' or 'perceived overs' to get him as a pre-agent at the end of this year.

Their thinking will be if we bring in Smith and Waterman, we load up and go again for the flag next year in what is a very even comp and open premiership race.

Yes we can likely get Waterman for free trade-wise at the end of 2025 as an UFA, but we will be hoping we have him for next year which will be Danger's last year and a year before other veterans maybe go a bit downhill for season 2026..

Cats are all about competing each year and maximising flag chances..

So we aren't taking into account Freos ladder position whilst playing 2 key forwards under the age of 23?

I understand supporters pump up their own players value, but seriously.

Waterman is 4 years older than Treacy. 5 years older than Amiss.

No, your point about him having 'non-performing' years.

He's always been a good performer but do you think he was getting a gig ahead of peak Kennedy & Darling? I think not.

It was only last year that he finally got a run at FF and was killing it until he got ill.

This year actually shows what he's capable of.

Prior to last year, he played a 'Mr Fix it' role around the ground, quite often running the wings.

He's always been a FF but he's not getting a gig ahead of our 2 greatest goal-kickers in their prime.

It'd be like making Amiss play wing when peak Pavlich is at FF and talking shit about him because he doesn't kick nearly as many goals Ben King.

Let's use our brains please.

Yeah but you dont. Unfortunately that affects Watermans price.

Hes 4 years older than Treacy and 5 years older than Amiss.
It wouldn't affect his price, other than teams thinking 'Gee, imagine if he actually had a top 4 midfield kicking to him?', which means his value would go UP, considering he's contracted.

Thing is, is there even a 'commitment', other than a Freo poster trying to deflate his value whilst pumping up his own players?

I actually genuinely do understand where you are coming from here, however if Geelong handed over a F1 and then some, their members would explode.

He doesn't have the runs on the board to command such a price.
