It is time the AFL makes new draftees have a mandatory 4-5 year contracts to start their careers and then they become free agents afterwards like the NFL have. Investing first round picks and then losing them for less in 2 seasons just does not compute.

Don't hate it, I guess the AFLPA would say it was restraint of trade, but agree should be more than 2 years

I thought is was clear that I mean if Dixon re-signs or goes to Freo (apparently meeting with them) and you have the 1st pick you would be very very very unlikely to pass up the best power forward in the draft. Not sure why you could get defensive about this?

Even if we got Dixon we'd take Schache.

Thats a double edged sword. How much do you pay them for years 3,4,and 5 . What if you want to flick them after two years.. Perhaps you Acc kid will help with this issue. Do it right , and one would think you could develop an early pick each year thats happy in QLD

There has to be a better way. The $$$ can always be worked out that is for sure. Maybe start with 3 years as original contract at the very least.

Interesting thoughts on Dixon, surely he is worth more then pick 20. He would be worth somewhere from 6-9 IMO.

Key forwards are hard to come by and he has proven what a great player he can be, he has had multiple big bags already this season. I think his off field issues have been over exaggerated as well, didn't he have a wine before game day or something? Thing that would worry me about him is his injuries, but if he is cleared by club medicos shouldn't be to much of an issue.

Hmmm...... if you guys really want Schache if we finish last it could be a good little opportunity for us, we could take him at pick 1 unless you sweetened the deal for Dixon, say Aish's pick and Zorko and then we let Schache slide to pick 2

Only joking that would be a campaigners act, a bit like threatening to take a player in the PSD rather than deal in good faith

Weller was pick 13 in the last draft, I think the Suns would be interested, but I agree they are highly unlikely to take a late first rounder in a weak draft

3 is reasonable .... but lets face it holding players against their will has its issues. And it will not be long before the 8 year FA trigger point is reduced.

The whole concept of putting aside ones own choice is done for good reasons but eventually players rights would come to the fore.
Think of it this way. Imagine no draft... just a huge pools of kids that are all able to be signed in the same manor that CatB Rookies are. First in best dressed... Imagine Weitering , Schache , Francis , Ah Chee being courted by all clubs at the combine. Where would they go? Where would Hipwood or Keays go?

Dixon for the pick they get for Aish + Leuenberger?

Might seem like a bit overs for Brisbane but they don't really need Leuenberger when they have Martin who is an elite ruckman and one of the best in the game imo, Leuenberger can't play forward that well either. Lions are in desperate need for a key forward and Dixon would suit them perfectly, I would be willing to pay overs to get him

Really, why?

Is it because of Dixons ankles?

Our current KPF stocks are really a bunch of lottery picks. All have shown signs but none have indicated they'll be guaranteed best 22, let alone very good.

The players have far too much power as it is and they will continue to get more which will harm the game.

No.

To be honest we should be rewarding well run clubs. Brisbane lost the go home five as much for how they were run at the time as the fact they were from interstate. Two equal and contributing factors I would say. Brisbane learnt from that and no doubt started taking steps forward but there were lots of noises about internal problems at the time. Brisbane is an attractive city , and Brisbane will be an attractive club when they have the off field thing sorted which as I said earlier they have no doubt already made strides in.

As for the argument for state of origin and make up of the side , this is what the academies are about. Generating more local talent for these teams with lower pools of talent and giving them first access to it. This is already pushing numbers into a more positive region for these teams , and I can't see why they cannot have similar home player to interstate player ratios to the wa and sa clubs which in general h

what off field thing?

I hope Hawthorn have a look at Aish. Kids obviously got talent, just not the desire at the moment.

Hawthorns first pick for Aish. Similar to the O'Rouke trade last year.

Brisbane have made massive strides off the field but will still see players leaving for bigger clubs or to play in their home state. Rewarding the well runs clubs is exactly why many clubs are running at a loss and will continue to.

I don't think he has the footskills that the Hawks like. Also I think GWS only gave O'Rourke away because they just have so much talent. Lions aren't in that position.
