James Bell

Player Profile

QBE Sydney Swans Academy product James Bell was rewarded for shining NEAFL form when he was called up for his AFL debut against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval in Round 21, 2019. The young Swan is one of Sydney’s quickest players, attacks the footy hard and can play on the inside of the midfield, on a wing or at half-forward. In a tribute to his family, Bell celebrated his first AFL goal with a striking Indigenous dance at the MCG in Round 22 last year.

James Bell

DOB:10 February 1999
DRAFT:2017
RECRUITED FROM: University of NSW-Eastern Suburbs (NSW)

Just because he has tatts doesn't make you tough , he has no ticker

Horrendous take there Bedders. Criticise his disposal, some of his decisions, but his effort, his heart, was 100%. Ticker is the last thing Bell needs to work on.

I want him in the middle playing on the second best oppo midfielder. Tag. Tackle. Little handballs and chaos balls forward. He might be Indigenous and wear 32 but he's not Lewis Jetta, and sometimes I think we fall into the trap of that comparison.

Does not like contact and there are plenty like him , but cops tatts. False toughness
Bedders, hit tackles with big time hurt. Actually saw one guy walk off after his hit. Loves the hit actually. Sorry, respect your view but can't agree here, the kid is tough.

Never ever thought of him like Jetta. I must be watching a different team , maybe 88 has got to me !

Why I rate Bell.....

He turned up as your prototype skinny indigenous player with lots of moves and class. But not enough. He was told he needed to get bigger and play a more defensive inside game. So he did.

He’s improved with every outing. Not every player of worth bursts onto the scene. Some have to grind their way to the top. Brett Kirk debuted at age 23. Dane Rampe at 22.

Bell may not make it. But if he takes another step forward next week and another step the following, who knows. He may be that Rampe or Kirk.

What is certain is that Bedders’ characterisation of him is plain wrong. He’s not soft. And he works bloody hard.

Look honestly I understand some frustration. Skills aside, he did get pushed off the ball a couple of times. But it never looked like a lack of commitment to me - just a bit of inexperience with positioning. When he had a clear run at either the ball or the ball carrier, he nailed the physical pressure side.

Still needs some work on what to do when he gets it, and he needs to get stronger if he's going to make the most of his talents in the guts. Plenty to work on, plenty to criticise, but I can't bring myself to criticise his guts.

im not wowed so far but i thought when stkilda got on the roll late he kept on fighting , often alone at the contest

not sure why his tatts matter dont give a toss about that

solid game today

One less possession and contested possession than Rowbottom tonight. Not sure about the angst towards him, don’t think he set the world on fire but a lack of ticker seems harsh.

Membrey has more ink and there is a reason the Swans delisted him.
they delist him so he could become one the best 2nd/3rd talls in the comp atm?

Who said he was 2nd/3rd best tall in the comp?

They moved him into the back line tonight against a bottom 4 team. He was poor tonight which is odd when you look at his career stats. Generally he exceeds against the weaker teams.
Have a look at his stats over the last few

sf51 our them up the other day

walks into our!22 in front of quite a few ,especially Reid imo
No doubt pour tonight but everyone has down game s

Has a go, but honestly if 'having a go' is the prerequisite for getting games then McLean and Wicks would be two of the first names on the board every week.

Can't see one discernible quality that makes him worth persisting with as a player, but gotta respect him for his fight, even when the game was well lost.

True he was poor tonight against an inexperienced line up.
Unfortunately he left us after 1 game for more opportunities which you can never begrudge. Maybe we should have moved on Goodes a year earlier. Hindsight’s a wonderful thing.

I think he has two discernible qualities - he puts the body in, and he runs hard to get himself to contests.

Needs to impact more when he gets near it, and there's no guarantee he'll be a player, but I strongly disagree with the assertion that there's nothing discernible. He's got some tools, and in my humble opinion it's worthwhile seeing what he can do with them for a few games.

He's no star but he's doing better than I thought he would week-to-week in seniors. Consistent contribution last night across 4 quarters. The knock on him has been that he doesn't have any particular strength or standout feature, but he's proving to be a solid tackler, runner, and decision-maker around HF. Giving himself the best chance to stick around.

Just to clarify, when did tattoos become a symbol of toughness? I thought they were a symbol of expression.

Weird take there, Bedders.

He is showing a bit more mongrel than I thought he had displayed previously.

Happy to be open minded on him. I have been one of the ones thinking he didn’t have much of a future as an AFL footballer but there might be something to work with there. Hopefully he keeps improving over the coming weeks.

I was the same. And it's not open and shut, but he's giving himself a chance so good on him.

Most distance covered by a Swan last night. Fourth highest average speed for any Swan. Also the most sprint efforts by any player. Has a good tank but not sure he’s that good with ball in hand. Rather he get a game than L Taylor or Grey at this stage.
