An interesting suggestion I read elsewhere: maybe this trade is how we can crack open our FF and get a second first-round pick this year? It's been reported by Twomey et al that we're interested in Pick 12. Why not have a crack at the compo pick that GWS just got for Perryman? The club staff would all have each other on speed-dial by now anyway.

Something like F1 for Peatling & 16, maybe with a bit more going their way to help with matching bids on Academy guys next year.

16 and Peatling for a speculative pick. Seems a bit farfetched. Realistically it'd be a mid 20s pick at best.
I'm still a bit confused as how this deal happens atm

Perhaps, but it's been mooted that we're interested in securing a second first-rounder, so we'll probably kick some tires. If that gets a bit complicated then we'll probably just offer our F2.

Just tried searching for Murphy's highlights
try "Jordan-Dawson-after-siren-showdown-goal"

I have it on good authority he spat it when he was moved to defence, Nicks was not terribly happy with his reaction and actually said "Well mate, if you don't like it theres the door".
I have it on better authority that he asked to be moved back to defence.
Good team man, Laird.

2 issues are:

  • contract value of 800k+ ish means it’s effectively a salary dump IMO. I can’t see how anyone trades for him with anything meaningful (second rounder or better) AND pay his total salary.
  • Rory as an introverted character who is settled in his home state would almost certainly poo poo the idea anyway

The second point is more relevant given he is contracted. He ain’t going anywhere.

The deal would be so shit for Adelaide that it wouldn't even be worth doing but I think you could get Laird agree to a trade. You just tell the bloke he has a choice to play AFL elsewhere or SANFL for us. I think Laird has a bit of an ego and would see playing SANFL as below him.

Imagine having a regular weekly spot on SEN and playing SANFL?

Yeh, I can just imagine him being a leaker given how easily he threw Rachele under the bus.

If true, Laird should have been dropped!

Yet we dropped Rachele for far less & Laird made it worse.

This could be true OR it could be total fabrication ... BUT Laird's on-field attitude once he went back to defence supports option A !!

And you know the old saying... everything before BUT is bulldust!

Presumably he’s out of contract so we’ve got a bit of leverage through the PSD to keep a lid on the trade cost for this deal.
not acting in good faith to not initially offer a second rounder for a 4 year contract on decent money i imagine (650-700k ?).

there is karma with these things and dont want to be 'that club' that screws over others as wont be long before our plethora of young talented players are OOC and others can do the same back to us.

IF GWS was totally unreasonable and demanding a first rounder then yes it becomes an option but they dont normally operate like that

yep agreed. would just need to pay out a contracted player to get 3 in the draft (4, this new pick AND Welsh). Shoey, Murph or Burgess most likely

Someone mentioned Peatlings second quarter vs Lions late in the season. Just watched. At qtr time Lions 4.7 to 0.1

Peatling gets put in the middle start of second and wins the first 2 clearances from centre bounces with both leading to goals. Total of 4 clearances in the first 5 mins of game time (inc 3 frees for too high as opponents like Berry and I think McCluggage can’t handle his pace and agility and his ability to go low when collecting ball and drawing a high free kick). Most influential player on the ground as they claw back 4 goals in the first half of the 2nd qtr which commentators keep mentioning his influence.

Also played as a defensive mid later in the game “cooling” Ashcroft later in the game.

Any other highlight quarters worth watching? I think someone mentioned Dees game also?

Very fair, depends on our targets in this draft I suppose. If we want Dodson this works well, if we want a second midfielder then 10 from Freo or 13 from GC probably the target.
I’m thinking Dodson as a priority, ROB still has a couple of years left unfortunately which gives him (Dodson) the opportunity to develop and build up his body before taking over.

Add 1 midfield jet at 4 and give them every chance to develop as a mid alongside the continuing development of Soligo, Rankine, Curtin, Dowling, Edwards etc.

I love the idea of getting 2 genuine mids, but I think it increases the risk of at least one of them not getting the opportunity to play early and get left behind at SANFL.

The risk is that Dodson at 16ish is very similar to the pick we were going to use on Taylor Goad last year who was rated very similar to Dobson. Well 12 months later and Goad is really struggling in the VFL and looks quite a few years off playing well, but more to the point you still don’t know if he will ever make it. It’s not just the extra years of development, but the very real chance that they are never going to be an AFL first ruck.

Someone like Travaglia is a very safe pick as he might end up a great midfielder, but even if he doesn’t there is plenty of spots across half back he can still be a great player in. Probably like Brodie Smith or Lachie Whitfield, both ended up all Australian level players without ever making it into the midfield.

Trade your ruckman in when you need him.
