Totally agree. This is where some observers really struggle when analysing performance. The position the player is in must come into account. Any way you choose to slice Pets' Showdown32 by the numbers (as a defensive small forward) his results are not just good, they are elite. It's probably why the coach went out of his way to praise him twice in the press conference. And the numbers don't even account for the work he did on HH.

Great post!

And in breaking news Petrenko comes equal fifth on the ground with 2 votes in the COACHES AWARD.

Come on Vader, I want to see a little bit of loose tie action followed by "Jared Petrenko, I was wrong"

Why?

Let' be real, in his 41 games of AFL football, he has played 3 or 4 really, really good (Brilliant) games of football with about 9 or 10 good games and the rest bordering on being average or below that.

That's the general problem with this board. Someone will play one brilliant game, be appointed as the next big thing and let so many down by not reaching that point. I could next 5 to 10 players where this board has proclaimed as the next thing.

Vader is right, Petrenko is still a work in progress and very inconsistent. This year he has been good and bringing that gap to become a consistent player but he needs a few more games at Sunday level.

Sarcasm meter is broken again mate.
First rule of sarcasm is AFGM is usually found somewhere around.

I can't recall saying that Petrenko was a chance for the Brownlow. My point related to the claim that Petrenko wasn't in our best 10 players yesterday. Do any of you nuff nuffs understand the role of a defensive forward? Pets played a very good game yesterday (any idea who was standing Hamish Hartlett Alex/Vader?) and according to the coaches was in the best 5 players on the ground.

He is developing into a useful small forward, which is just as well since our other alternatives are either injury prone or coming to the end of their AFL career. Wasn't it an inspired move to develop him as a small forward>

Correct AFGM Petrenko plays on the oppositions rebounding playmaker every week yet bigfooty 'experts' still want him to kick 3 goals get 20 touches and play like eddie betts.

He is playing a role, providing great pressure and getting better. Well done pup:thumbsu: Wish we had 2 of him, would be handy in the back pocket as well.

First, lose the chip on the shoulder it's getting old and tiresome and secondly Yesterday was one of JP better games and right up the top of his tree.

I don't think I've ever said anything about where he plays, he's (like most young players) just very inconsistent.

I think it may be possible that Vader's unwavering under-rating of Petrenko has resulted in an almost board-wide over-rating of him, to compensate.

Don't get me wrong, I like Pets, but calling him elite is a little OTT.

From what I saw, Pets was great last night, but I don't have him in my top 5 for the game, and he is definitely not elite.

No you took what AFGM was saying the wrong way. I said nothing about him being consistant.

No I didn't, I was sticking up for Vader in the fact that he had to loosen his tie and admit he was wrong. When he doesn't because JP is still very inconsistent, hasn't reached an effective level of play for someone to change their mind.

What, mine or yours?

You must be using sarcasm if you're saying Petrenko has been consistent up to this point of his career.

Vader has been stating that Petrenko is not AFL standard and won't play more than "x" amount of games

Games like last night show the talent is there and once the application is consistent, he'll be a very good AFL player that will play many games at this level

And sometimes, it takes that 1 game to form that self belief and then something in his head goes "ding, ding, ding, if i prepare myself and play like this, i'll play a lot more AFL"

Confidence would play a huge part with a player like Petrenko

Vader isn't far off the mark with regards to the overall package thus far, but I still believe that Petrenko is growing as a player and that consistency is the key rather than ability.

Where Vader has really let himself down and has been totally wrong more than once is in the assessment of certain individual games where Petrenko has actually excelled beyond his usual standard. Yesterday's game is a perfect example, another was the St. Kilda slaughter last year.

Without putting words into Vader mouth, once this happens Im sure he will change his mind and admit he is wrong. But that is the key, consistency. He was fantastic Sunday night and more games like that will help change many people mind.

Seen the presser vader?

Go listen to it.

Sanderson says something along the lines of, 'Peterenko plays a bit of a thankless role externally, but we really admire him inside the 4 walls here.'
Just bumping this for you Vader. Also said a very similar thing about the other list clogger Wright.
This was probably Pets' best game of his career. It was definitely his best game of the season. He's still not in the same universe as the term "elite".
Not really surprised you forgot the Sydney game last year where he was clear BOG and got the 3 Brownlow votes accordingly.

Yeah, and not like Betts was inconsistent and dropped for about the first 5 or 6 years of his career... Vader, when did small forwards all of a sudden need to become elite in their first 5 years? Very rarely happens.

Somewhat amusing, considering that the reverse is actually true. Much of my reasoning for bringing Petrenko fans back to earth is due to a massive boardwide over-rating of a player who has done little to deserve it. Yesterday was probably only the 2nd AFL standard performance of his entire career.

This may have been the case initially, but I don't think it is any more.

Reading this thread leads me to think you're unintentionally fanning the flames by giving the issue more attention than it's due.

Would you lay off Neil Craig FFS?

You must think he was an absolute dunce to keep picking Petrenko so often. Surprised you weren't leading the calls for his sacking given this vitriol that is only leaking out now.

And yet we extended his contract in March on the back of 1 AFL standard game up to that point... I'm surprised we're not 0-5 given the state our list must be in to gift crap players like Petrenko games and contract extensions.

I think a lot of the affection for Pets stems from last year when he came into the side and actually looked like he gave a damn when the majority didn't. Sure, his disposal count is down this year compared to previous years, but he's playing a different (and important) role for the team. Not every player can be a flashy midfielder averaging 30+ disposals a week.
